Mayor Eric Adams unveils new campaign office in Brooklyn as he ramps up re-election bid
Dozens of enthusiastic supporters gathered outside the modest, Old Mill Basin office — situated between a smoke shop and a Chinese restaurant — which was plastered with signs that read 'Re-Elect Eric for Mayor' to celebrate the opening.
'Why Brooklyn?' Adams asked the crowd on Avenue T, near East 58th Street, 'Because Brooklyn is the place I was born … it was the place that shaped and made me.'

Former aides, municipal union reps, and even the mayor's brother, Bernard Adams, were among those in attendance at what the campaign said would be the first of several offices it will open across the five boroughs.
It was the second notable event for Hizzoner's re-election bid this week.

On Tuesday, Adams — who is running in the November race as an independent after opting not to vie for the Democratic nomination — got a boost from scores of city faith leaders at an endorsement event in front of City Hall, where one pastor took shots at frontrunner Zohran Mamdani.

But Adams was also dealt a blow Wednesday when the city's Campaign Finance Board — which matches candidates' fundraising 8-1 with public dollars — again denied him access to the funds.
Adams and the CFB have been locked in a standoff since December as the regulatory board has repeatedly barred him from the program, citing suspicions of the mayor's 2021 campaign violating the law and an alleged refusal by the current team to provide information requested as part of its probe.

A recent poll showed Adams grabbing a mere 7% of votes in the upcoming election, losing a substantial amount of support to fellow independent candidate ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mamdani, the Democratic nominee.
But Adams, the former Brooklyn borough president, took a fighting stance Thursday.

'They counted us out in 2021. We were 13 points behind Andrew Yang, and they counted us out,' he said.

'They thought that we couldn't win. But I knew something that no one else knew. I knew the people.'
Adams also brushed off the latest snub from the CFB when speaking to reporters following the unveiling.
'Denial's never stopped me, I'm not distracted, I'm grinding,' he said.

Nancy Pelosi says sex changes for trans kids is something she's working for ‘at the national level'
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that sex changes for transgender children is something she's working for 'at the national level.' Earlier in the day, Pelosi toured the San Francisco VA Medical Center to review health-system upgrades, research initiatives and—according to a press release from her staff—the threat that House Republicans might slash core veterans' services. While speaking with reporters, she was asked how her office was responding to pauses to 'gender-affirming care' in California. 'That is something I'm working for at the national level, and we are hoping we can have gender-affirming care for our trans kids,' Pelosi said. 'It's a sad thing for us… I don't know what effect we can have nationally with what we have going on in the White House and in Congress.' She called the situation 'really sad, adding that a transgender-pride flag—five horizontal stripes of light blue, pink and white—hangs outside her office. Pelosi also said several colleagues display the same flag. She acknowledged that many Republicans on Capitol Hill oppose medical transition for transgender youth. 5 Nancy Pelosi toured the San Francisco VA Medical Center to review health-system upgrades on Thursday. AP 5 Pelosi was asked about 'gender-affirming care' while speaking with reporters during her visit to the San Francisco VA Medical Center. AP Still, she is not alone in her stance on sex changes for kids. Earlier this month, over a dozen officials from Democratic-led states filed a lawsuit to stop the Trump administration from blocking access to sex change procedures and treatments for people under the age of 19. The complaint, which was filed in the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts, argues that the Trump administration wants to impose a nationwide ban on sex change procedures by threatening providers with 'baseless criminal charges' and investigations. 5 Democrats are trying to stop the Trump administration from blocking sex change procedures people under the age of 19. AP Bondi's memo directs the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate and prosecute those who offer sex-change treatments to minors. Shumate's memo directs prosecutors to prioritize investigations against doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies that perform such procedures. In July, Kaiser Permanente announced that it would pause sex change surgeries for patients under 19 beginning Aug. 29 in response to the Trump administration's efforts on the matter. The same month, Children's Hospital Los Angeles shuttered its Center for Trans Youth Health and Development, one of the nation's largest clinics for transgender young people. 5 A person waved a trans pride flag at the WorldPride Parade in Washington, DC. Map Shows China Surrounded by Conflicts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Clashes at the Thai-Cambodian border late last month marked the second conflict to erupt on China's doorstep this year, following the brief air war between ally Pakistan and India over contested Kashmir. On its periphery are two longer-running conflicts involving China's strategic partners—the civil war in Myanmar and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As the Indo-Pacific's largest military and political power, China has a stake in regional security matters, particularly when fighting breaks out near its borders. Below, Newsweek briefly outlines each recent or ongoing conflict and Beijing's position on it. Myanmar Civil War Armed resistance groups have battled Myanmar's military since it seized power in a February 2021 coup. The junta has killed more than 7,000 civilians, according to estimates by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. China shares a border with Myanmar, and the ongoing war has disrupted Beijing's significant business interests there. While the junta controls little more than 20 percent of the country's territory, it benefits from continued Chinese military support, including armored vehicles, artillery and fighter jets. "China and Myanmar are friendly neighbors," Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said in April. "We follow the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs, support Myanmar in safeguarding independence, sovereignty, national unity and territorial integrity, support various parties in Myanmar in carrying out friendly consultation toward political reconciliation, and support Myanmar in resuming the political transition process." Russia-Ukraine Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine is the next longest-running conflict involving a Chinese neighbor. The bulk of the fighting has taken place in Ukraine, and between August 2024 and mid-2025, Russia's Kursk region. However, Ukrainian military intelligence have claimed responsibility for a May 30 attack on a military base in Russia's Far East city of Vladivostok—about 50 miles from the Chinese border. Though Beijing frames itself as neutral, the United States and European Union have accused China of enabling Russia by allowing Chinese companies to supply its quasi-ally with civilian-military dual-use goods, including unmanned aerial vehicles, and by continuing to purchase Russian oil and gas, helping Moscow's wartime economy withstand heavy international sanctions. In a news conference with German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul last month, China's top diplomat Wang Yi said, per a Chinese Foreign Ministry readout, "China's position has been open and consistent, which includes promoting peace talks, not providing lethal weapons to parties in the conflict, and strictly controlling the export of dual-use articles, including drones." Thailand-Cambodia A fragile truce reached on July 28 between Thailand and Cambodia ended five days of hostilities that left 35 people dead and more than 100 injured, following a flare-up in the neighbors' long-standing border tensions. Cambodia has one of the most pro-China governments in the Asia-Pacific, though Beijing maintains close ties with both countries and has urged restraint. "China upholds a just and fair position, supports Cambodia and Thailand in enhancing communication and resolving differences properly, supports advancing political settlement through the ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations] Way, and is ready to continue playing a constructive role for the peaceful settlement of the border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand," a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday. India-Pakistan According to reports, China played a role during and after the four-day aerial clashes between its strategic ally Pakistan and India in the disputed Kashmir region in early May. India's defense minister accused Beijing of "providing all possible support" to Islamabad, noting that 81 percent of the military hardware Pakistan had acquired since 2020 came from China. French intelligence have alleged that Chinese officials sought to hype weapons systems—such as the Chengdu J-10 fighter jet—by contrasting its performance with that of French-made Rafale jets during May's aerial dogfights in a bid to present Chinese aircraft as superior. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning described India and Pakistan as "important neighbors" of China. She told reporters last month, "Over the past weeks and months, China has closely followed the developments between India and Pakistan, actively promoted talks for peace, and worked to maintain regional peace and stability."

'No Other Solution to This Problem': Intel Stock (NASDAQ:INTC) Plunges as Trump Calls For Lip-Bu Tan's Immediate Resignation
President Trump has a surprising amount of power when it comes to business operations. But is that power sufficient to convince chip stock Intel (INTC) to dismiss its CEO? Trump called for the immediate resignation of Lip-Bu Tan from Intel, and investors howled their displeasure. Intel stock fell nearly 4% in Thursday afternoon's trading. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. The report comes amid plans from the Trump administration to put a hefty new tariff on imported computer chips: 100%. The tariff would be removed if companies either started making their chips, or developed sufficient plans to make them, in the United States. And this likely would have been a significant help for Intel, at least, until Trump took aim at Lip-Bu Tan. The bleak pronouncement from the Trump administration arrived after a letter from Senator Tom Cotton went to Frank Yeary, Chairman of the Board at Intel. The report called particular attention to '…the security and integrity of Intel's operations and its potential impact on U.S national security.' Cotton's letter also asked Intel if it knew about any outstanding subpoenas addressed to Lip-Bu Tan's former firm, and whether or not Tan still had ties to China. Then Trump Weighed In After that letter arrived, Trump took to social media to weigh in himself. Trump pulled no punches, declaring, 'The CEO of Intel is highly conflicted and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem.' Reports noted that Lip-Bu Tan had made '…hundreds of investments in Chinese companies…' dating back over the last few decades. Some of those investments were made personally, while others were made through venture funds that he had some connection with. Some of those investments, reports noted, were with companies that had connections to the People's Liberation Army, the Chinese military. While this may be more of a tempest in a teapot than anything else, the idea that someone from here might get the idea to start eyeing Intel's receipt of CHIPS Act money with the word 'clawback' in mind is not outlandish in response. Is Intel a Buy, Hold or Sell? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on INTC stock based on one Buy, 26 Holds and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 0.39% loss in its share price over the past year, the average INTC price target of $22.18 per share implies 12.73% upside potential.
