What is CTE? Why this brain disease is behind Manhattan shooting by Shane Tamura
Shane Tamura, the crazed gunman who killed five people inside a Midtown skyscraper that housed many offices, mentioned CTE several times in his long manifesto, which can also be read as a suicide not,e as he ended his life after killing people in the office.
CTE is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, which is a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma, such as concussions or even sub-concussive hits (blows that don't cause symptoms but still jolt the brain). Football players, boxers, hockey players, military veterans are often diagnosed with this disease.
Tamura claimed that he was suffering from CTE and blamed football for his condition. New York Post reported that in his note, he thanked a documentary on CTE brain injuries and listed the names of several prominent neuroscientists.
'Terry Long, football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,' Tamura wrote. 'You can't go against the NFL, they'll squash you.'
'Please study brain for CTE. I'm sorry. The league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits. They failed us," he wrote.
In CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), the brain deteriorates over time due to repeated hits to the head—even if those hits don't cause a full concussion.

CTE is rare and not completely understood by doctors, and there is no way to diagnose the disease in a living person – doctors can only confirm the disease in an autopsy after death.
The disease has been linked to football, given the contact-heavy, physical nature of the sport.
The note mentioned 'Fainaru brothers' — the two ESPN reporters who co-wrote the 'League of Denial' book. Elsewhere, the names of several doctors were featured on one page, including Dr.
Ann McKee, the chief of neuropathology at BU Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and Dr. Christopher Nowinski, the co-founder of Boston University's CTE Center.
Tamura has been described as a mentally unstable person but there is no history of him professionally playing football. But it is believed that his apparent target was the NFL office, which was at the same building but he did not kill anyone from NFL and ended up killing Wesley LePatner, an executive of Blackstone.
Tamura worked as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino and he did not report to duty Sunday. He drove through several states to reach New York City just hours before the mass shooting. Tamura's car was spotted passing through Colorado on July 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and Columbia, New Jersey, at 4:24 p.m. Monday. And then he drove into Manhattan.
Cops found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, extra ammunition, magazines, a backpack and medication prescribed to him searching his car.
He had a concealed firearms permit from Las Vegas with a 2027 expiration date.
CTE and football
A 2017 study by Boston University's CTE Center found that of the 111 NFL brains it examined, 110 had some level of CTE.
In September 2024, a study by the Football Players Health Study at Harvard University revealed that out of a sample of 2,000 former NFL players, about a third believed they have CTE.

Is Gen Z facing a heightened diabetes risk?
The answer to the question of whether Gen Z is facing an increased risk of developing diabetes is a resounding 'YES'! The key factor responsible for this is the rise in prevalence of childhood obesity. Globally as per the WHO, 35 million children under the age of 5 are overweight, while over 390 million children and adolescents aged 5–19 years are overweight, including 160 million living with obesity. Childhood obesity is a growing phenomenon that was thought to be an issue only for developed countries. However, it is now on the rise in low- and middle-income countries also. This is in turn leading to the once rare diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a younger population becoming more and more common. A ten-year study showed prevalence of T2DM increased by 36% in a younger population of between 20-39 years of age. Other findings of the study included a rise in incidence by 120% in the younger individuals, a significant increase in cardiometabolic risk. Obesity and family history of diabetes were the primary contributing factors for the rising prevalence in both groups. There are essentially two types of diabetes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo The first is Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), a chronic autoimmune disease that prevents the pancreas from making insulin, requiring regular insulin injections. This typically manifests in the young population. The other is Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), which is experiencing a significant rise among the youth and the general Indian population. In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas doesn't make enough insulin or there is insulin resistance. Genetic factors and lifestyle factors, including obesity, increase the risk of development of Type 2 diabetes and it is this that makes it a serious health wake-up call for Generation Z. The lifestyle and habits of Gen Z are shaping not only their immediate well-being but their lifelong health trajectories. Getting diagnosed at 20 years of age exposes them to high blood glucose for a longer period of time, which in turn increases the risks of complications of kidneys, heart, eyes, feet, and liver. Early intervention, education, and a shift in societal norms around nutrition and physical activity are essential to stem this tide and protect our youngest generations. Early obesity does not only affect appearance or activity levels, it changes the body's metabolic programming. Excess fat, especially around the abdomen, leads to insulin resistance, where the body's cells ignore signals from insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Over time, this resistance leads to failing pancreatic function and precipitates type 2 diabetes. Young patients with T2DM then require medication, dietary management, and constant glucose monitoring which is a heavy burden for young shoulders. Gen Z, those born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s are digital natives who have grown up in an era of unparalleled technological convenience. Yet this comes with hidden costs - screen time has replaced outdoor sports and activities, video games and scrolling through social media dominate free hours that once saw children running, jumping, and engaging in organized sports. Urbanization has further diminished green spaces and safe play areas. Marketing of sugary drinks and snacks relentlessly targets young audiences, normalizing poor dietary choices, placing Gen Z at the centre of a lifestyle where obesity and diabetes risk is at high levels. Preventing obesity and diabetes requires a multi-faceted approach. Parents and caregivers must model and reinforce balanced eating habits: emphasizing fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and water over sugary beverages. Schools and communities play a critical role by integrating regular physical activity into daily routines, ensuring safe playgrounds, and limiting sales of junk foods on campus. Policymakers and public health authorities can support these efforts through regulations on food marketing, comprehensive nutritional labelling, and community-wide campaigns that celebrate active lifestyles, like putting 'sugar board' in school to monitor and reduce sugar intake in school children. We must take action and reverse obesity trends before metabolic damage accelerates with onset of diabetes in tomorrow's adults. We must take collective action with health professionals, educators, parents, and policymakers taking up a shared responsibility of nurturing healthier environments for Gen Z. An apple or a banana over a packet of chips, every hour of playtime outside makes our children's health worth the effort. Generation Z stands at a crossroads today. With the right guidance and resolve now, they can live a healthy life free from obesity and diabetes. Let us harness the power of early prevention to chart a healthier course. Let us heed this wake-up call together, for the sake of our children's futures! (Dr. Sushil Kumar, Sr Consultant Paediatrics, Apollo Hospitals Bilaspur)

70% enrolment of participants for Phase III clinical trial of dengue vaccine completed: Centre
Seventy percent enrolment of participants for the Phase III clinical trial of the indigenous one-shot dengue vaccine , DengiAll , has been completed, Minister of State for Health, Prataprao Jadhav, told Lok Sabha on Friday. The Indian Council of Medical Research ( ICMR ) has undertaken a clinical trial titled phase III, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo controlled study to evaluate the efficacy, immunogenicity and safety of the single-dose Dengue Tetravalent vaccine, live attenuated (Recombinant, Lyophilised) - 'DengiAll', Jadhav said in a written reply. The approximate budget for the trial is Rs 1.3 to 1.5 crore per site, Jadhav said. Live Events According to ICMR, there is no specific antiviral treatment or licensed vaccines for dengue and the treatment is supportive in nature, Jadhav said. A total of 5,73,563 laboratory confirmed dengue cases were reported through the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) in 2024, according to information shared by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) , . According to ICMR, all four serotypes of the dengue virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV -4) are known to circulate and co-circulate in India. Multiple serotypes can be present in the same geographical region and can even infect the same individual at the same time. Hence, participants have been enrolled in the ICMR vaccine trial from different zones where these four serotypes circulate in order to test the efficacy of the vaccine against all four serotypes, Jadhav said. The minister also said that the Union Health Ministry, Director General of Health Services, and National Centre for Vector Borne Disease Control (NCVBDC) regularly monitor the situation of dengue outbreaks across the country for assessing the disease situation, preparedness, technical guidance and to sensitise and forewarn the states. Under the National Health Mission, adequate budgetary support is provided to states and Union territories for dengue control activities such as epidemic preparedness, monitoring, case management, vector control (provision of domestic breeding checkers, ASHA involvement, insecticide, fogging machines), training, intersectoral convergence, awareness activities, etc. For surveillance and free of cost diagnosis of dengue, Sentinel Surveillance Hospitals with laboratory facility and Apex Referral laboratories with advance diagnostic facilities have been identified across the country, Jadhav said. The government of India has developed national guidelines on dengue treatment/management, in consultation with experts, which have been shared with all the states and UTs for implementation. The guidelines emphasise the preparedness of hospitals for case treatment/management. In addition, advisories have been issued from time to time to states/UTs for prevention and control of dengue, including case management, the minister said.
