'Alien: Earth is the best the franchise has been in years - but it has one glaring issue'
Alien: Earth has finally arrived with two episodes dropping this week on Disney+ - FX on Hulu if you're in the States - and countless fans of the franchise will be eager to find out how it stands up to the rest of the franchise.
Boasting incredible production values, an incredible cast of established stars and newcomers, and Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley leading the charge, everything is in place for the new prequel to become a monster success.
Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Alien franchise, having watched the first two films multiple times, even once getting the chance to see Ridley Scott's 1979 masterpiece that started it all on the big screen.
I even enjoy the much-maligned prequel Prometheus, which I've watched maybe five times - that's how much I love this gooey, grotesque and mystifying sci-fi epic.
Fellow Alien aficionados will be pleased to know that the critical response to the new series has been stellar so far, currently scoring 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
I'm pretty much in agreement with the consensus - the first six episodes of the eight-part season I was able to watch are as propulsive and gory as any Alien instalment should be, while veering off into some eerie new directions I wasn't expecting that have the makings of a stunning finale and, hopefully, multiple future outings.
However, there's just one niggling problem I'm having with the series so far that I'm praying gets fixed by the finale, or else is tackled in a potential second season.
The iconic body horror saga has already had its fair share of ups and downs over the years, the first wobble occurring with the divisive Alien 3 in 1992, which was packed with interesting ideas and launched the career of auteur filmmaker David Fincher but was overall a bit of a mess.
This was followed by the increasingly woeful Alien: Resurrection and the two barely connected Alien vs. Predator films before Scott himself returned to the franchise for the divisive prequels Prometheus and Alien: Covenant.
Both underrated, in my opinion, though again a little too overstuffed with existential ramblings and diversions from the original series that put off most casual audiences.
Then came last year's Alien: Romulus, a sort of greatest hits of the Alien franchise which got things back on track but was ultimately far too beholden to Scott's masterpiece to offer anything fresh and exciting.
With Hawley's take on the franchise, you still get the mash-up of all the best the franchise has to offer, though with far less of Romulus's nostalgic pandering and far more courage to remix and reinvent Alien's most recognisable iconography.
Much like the original film, which is still the benchmark for the franchise, Earth is more concerned with ethical conundrums and biological dread than cheap kills. The grisly horror is still here in spades, but, after a cataclysmic opening two-parter, the pacing slows just enough to let Hawley's skin-crawling exploration of biology and human psychology breathe.
Taking the series' familiar themes of artificial intelligence one step further by questioning the legitimacy of transferring human consciousness, exemplified by Sydney Chandler's literally child-like 'Wendy', this is far more compelling than Romulus' heroic android Andy (played by David Jonsson), who was largely present to tell bad jokes and recycle old one-liners.
But fans are also coming for the 'Alien' itself, the iconic Xenomorph that has haunted spaceships for over four decades. And it's my regret to inform you that this is the show's biggest downfall.
Although the creature is as terrifying as ever, thankfully brought to life primarily with a practical costume and in-camera trickery, its role in the first season has been somewhat muted and it doesn't quite feel like the unstoppable force from previous entries. Here, the Xenomorphs can be incapacitated more easily than ever before, by both humans and synthetics, rendering them some of the least threatening foes in the franchise yet.
To counter this, a number of brand new lifeforms never seen before in the Alien universe have been introduced, but these are also a little hit-or-miss. In contrast to the Xenomorph, they're disappointingly reliant on CGI and their own methods of tearing humans apart from the inside aren't nearly as memorable as the now iconic facehugger-to-chestburster lifecycle that has since become ubiquitous.
Hopefully Hawley has something up his sleeve to remedy this but, until we get to see those final two episodes, so far Alien: Earth is still a fantastic watch, even if it's lacking a little bite.
Alien: Earth continues Wednesdays on Disney+.
For a limited time only, witness the first stage of the life cycle of the Xenomorph up close with a thrilling new display at London's Natural History Museum.
Visitors can touch real pieces of the solar system at the Museum's blockbuster exhibition, Space: Could Life Exist Beyond Earth?, and discover more about one of pop culture's most iconic and frightening creatures just by the entrance until Friday, 22nd August.

'I was first on board world's biggest cruise ship and one thing was instantly obvious'
Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas is the world's biggest cruise ship alongside sister ship Icon of the Seas and we got a first look onboard The world's biggest and newest cruise ship set sail on her maiden passenger voyage - and I was lucky enough to be on board. Star of the Seas is a giant floating city with 20 decks crammed with top-notch attractions for the whole family, including a water park, swimming pools, crazy golf, theatres, an ice skating rink, 14 shops and 40 bars and restaurants. It is so big, it feels quite odd as it will take you a few days to find your way around this monster which set sail from Port Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday night. But after dashing around the decks, here's a few highlights of the Royal Caribbean ship that you won't want to miss. Thrill Island is the largest waterpark at sea with SIX record-breaking water slides. The biggest is not for the faint-hearted but a must for the adventurous. One of its most daring features is Crown's Edge, part skywalk and part ride 154ft above the ocean. Adrenaline-seekers navigate a suspended walkway and experience a controlled freefall before gliding down a zipline to the deck below. It is meant to test the bravery of the thrill-seeker - and it certainly does that. After all, it's the sister ship to Icon of the Seas which is also a hit with adventurous holidaymakers. READ MORE: Inside huge shipyard building Disney cruise ships with cranes lifting 800-ton blocks There's no need to leave the ship if you fancy a bit of surfing, either. The Flow-rider is a wave machine which allows you to go "boogie boarding" and simulate real Surfing USA. Incredibly, 30,000 gallons of water a minute rush under the rider at 30mph creating a five-foot wave. Watch out for the height restrictions of 4ft 10in for stand-up surfing or 4ft 4in for boogie boarding. If you'd rather chill than thrill head to the adults-only area at the rear of the ship - or the aft as we rookie seafarers call it. There you can relax in the suspended infinity pool and enjoy vast ocean views with a cocktail in hand while grooving to the beat of an Ibiza-style DJ. There's also a shady bar nearby and a terrace with whirlpools. Don't worry about dashing to the bar for a refill. The efficient waiters will attend to your needs and keep your glasses well topped up. Chill Island is a three-deck area for holidaymakers to kick back at four pools, including the Royal Bay, the largest pool at sea. Guests can enjoy live bands while they sip on tropical cocktails from the swim-up bar called The Swim and Tonic. The bags of entertainment for the kids and sporty types, including a spectacular mini golf course and a sports court offering five-a-side football and basketball on the top deck. Don't worry about the ball going overboard, either, as it's entirely covered by netting. If you're travelling with a young family, head for Surfside. It's THE place to stay and play all day, however old the children are. Younger kids and toddlers will have great fun at Splashaway Bay and Baby Bay, while parents can relax nearby. There are plenty of lifeguards, constantly on full alert, so no reason to worry about their safety. There's a multi-level playground called Playscape, which includes a rock climbing wall, with safety harnesses provided. Just like Star of the Seas they can take cruising to another level.

Dad visits Disney World and issues brutal verdict – but fans spot big mistake
Walt Disney World Resort, Florida is a family favourite, but social influencer Alex Dobson has dropped a video expressing his thoughts on the park - and it's gone viral in just a day With the summer holidays in full swing, many families will be embarking on vacations, whether that's abroad or as part of a staycation. Some of those seasonal revellers will be lucky enough to be visiting 'Mickey's House', AKA, Walt Disney World Resort, Florida. It's estimated that just under 1 million UK visitors travel to Orlando annually, with 80% of those visiting 'the most magical place of earth'. However, while Disney World and Disney Land are widely loved by children and held with a fierce nostalgia by many parents (and non-parents), the reality can sometimes prove to be less than dreamy. What's more, one viral video recently popped the Mickey-ears shaped bubble with one deft swipe. Alex Dodman is a social influencer with roughly 450,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram. The father-of-three is famous for his 'real reviews' of family days out, attractions and holidays, as well as viral trends and cultural events - and now his spotlight is firmly on the Disney resort. Opening the review with a wry, "It's almost like we've been programmed to think that this is the most magical place on earth", while filming a motorway gantry leading into the theme park that proclaims the very same, Alex boldly claims that "it's probably the most overpriced tourist p**stakes in history". As many a parent who's been through the Disney World machine will attest to, the resort is not cheap. A Disney World holiday for a family of four from the UK, including flights, can range from around £6,500 to £15,000 or more, depending on the various packages. And the repeated financial roundhouse kicks are not entirely conducive to a happy holiday between married people, either, with Alex saying it's likely they're going to "pretend they're having a good time posting about it online, when in reality they've probably argued about 1,000 times, been on the brink of divorce, and each child has had an overstimulated meltdown every half an hour". According to the influencer: "A ticket to get in here for the day for two adults, two kids and a baby was $709 and because I actually wanted the kids to go on a ride this time, I got some lightning Lane tickets for three rides for an extra $136... How is this even allowed?" 'Main Street', the thoroughfare with full view of the Disney Castle, is one to swerve, says Alex. Not impressed with people that "pretended to cry when they first saw the castle", he cracked on to the rides - saying that "having some lightning Lane tickets did work well". He was less than impressed with the rides themselves, saying the 'Barnstormer' "lasted for 25 seconds", 'Peter Pan's Flight' was "basically pitch black" and 'It's a Small World' was "everyone's favourite nightmare". Conceding that he did understand why "this place is some people's happy place", Alex reflected that the 'trap' may lie in the fact that Brits have travelled all the way to Orlando. For that reason, it's tempting to give in to the cost to embrace a "once in a lifetime" trip. However, he went on to say that: "There's no way you can enjoy this without having in the back of the mind how utterly screwed you're being done by Disney". Summing up, Alex considered the pay off of such a pricey trip, saying: "Did the kids enjoy it? Yeah. But we also went to Clearwater Beach for the weekend, and they said they had a better time jumping in the sea there, which was free". He added: "However you chop it up, it's way too expensive." Comments to the video were mixed, with some wholeheartedly agreeing and others fiercely defending the place that they deeply love. Many pointed out that Alex's big mistake was not booking park hopper tickets that make the experience a whole lot more affordable. Doing more research could have helped him to avoid the busiest queues, too. One follower helpfully supplied: "Yeah, feels like you need so much insider knowledge to not be stung so much with Disney. Park hopper tickets are a better and cheaper option. Staying at Disney property helps for costs with parking for free and dining plans." Another person was keen to help too, saying: "Disney World takes a lot of research to do it well and paying for lightning lanes on these type of rides shows you didn't complete basic training in Disney world trip planning. I think it's to do with having really little kids too it's so much fun in the bigger better rides with older kids". One poster was relived that they weren't missing out, saying: "Thank you for blessing us poor who can't get there that we aren't depriving our kids and ourselves of the most magical experience on earth". And one full-blown fan was clear where her loyalty lay, expressing: "I'm in the Disney cult. Please don't save me if I blink. They can take my hard earned cash from me so I can walk down that busy street, get tears in my eyes and reminisce of days gone by. "

Sabrina Carpenter reacts to being on title track for Taylor Swift's new album after idolizing her as a child
Sabrina Carpenter offered her reaction to being a feature on the titular track for Taylor Swift 's upcoming album The Life Of A Showgirl. The 26-year-old Espresso songstress - who had idolized the Grammy winner as a child - jumped to her Instagram stories on Wednesday to express her excitement over being including on Taylor's 12th studio album. Taylor sent fans into a frenzy this week when she announced that new music was on the way on her boyfriend Travis Kelce 's New Heights podcast. She later unveiled the very sexy cover art for the album - which is slated to be released later this year on October 3. Taylor also gave fans a glimpse at the track list and revealed that Sabrina features on the titular song. The former Disney channel star reposted an image of the 12 tracks and penned, 'THE LIFE OF A SHOWGIRL OCTOBER 3. i know someone who's freaking out and it's me.' She shared another slide that included a photo of the pair performing on stage during Taylor's Eras Tour. Lastly, Sabrina further supported her close pal by uploading another accompanying album image and wrote, 'must also point out that.' The Bad Blood singer could be seen wearing a flashy showgirl costume that comprised of a diamond-encrusted bralette top and matching headpiece. The outfit also contained fuzzy embellishments for a final touch. Before Sabrina developed a friendly bond with Taylor, she was first a big fan of the performer. Back in 2009, the Girl Meets World actress uploaded her first YouTube video which showed her covering Taylor's song Picture To Burn. A fan account of the Please Please Please songstress shared a post on X on Wednesday that showed Sabrina's cover of Taylor's 2006 track alongside the announcement that she will feature on Taylor's upcoming album. Over the years, the two music artists have been spotted hanging out at star-studded events and grabbing dinner together. During an interview with Rolling Stone in 2023, Sabrina gushed about Taylor and said, 'Watching her is a masterclass in itself.' She added, 'Obviously, she's very good with words. So I feel a lot more comfortable that I'm going into a situation with someone that I admire so much and I'm just gonna like study.' That same year, Sabrina opened for Taylor during the singer's sold-out Eras Tour and previously called the moment 'a dream come true.' In February 2024, the Espresso hitmaker joined Taylor on stage in Sydney, Australia as they performed together. They reunited on stage once again later that same year in New Orleans. Taylor has also shared her public support for Sabrina and encouraged fans to listen to the singer's Short n' Sweet album which dropped last year. Taylor received the same support from Sabrina after she unveiled the cover for her highly-anticipated new album The Life Of A Showgirl. The 14-time Grammy Award-winning singer first dropped the news about her 12th studio album earlier this week while teasing her upcoming appearance on her boyfriend's New Heights podcast. And on Wednesday, just minutes after her New Heights episode premiered, Taylor revealed the official album cover for The Life Of A Showgirl, which is currently available for preorder on her website. She confirmed that the album will be released on October 3 - just over a year and a half after the release of her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. Taylor also revealed the album's official 12-song track list, confirming the inclusion of the song, Ruin The Friendship, which fans are convinced is a Blake Lively diss track. 'And, baby, that's show business for you. New album The Life of a Showgirl. Out October 3 ❤️,' Swift tweeted to fans on X (formerly Twitter). Proving to be her sexiest album cover yet, Taylor flashes the flesh in a skimpy green jeweled bodysuit while submerged in water in what appeared to be a bathtub. The album's cover art has a collage-like look as cropped, close-up photos of Taylor's bedazzled body are used as a border. 'The Life Of A Showgirl' is spelled out in glittery orange lettering. The busty starlet stares stoically at the camera in the striking image captured by famed photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who she last worked with on the album artwork for her 2017 album Reputation. 'I loved what they did with those photos, so I called them up for [this album],' she shared on the New Heights podcast. 'I am so happy with the way the photos came out with this one.' She said she wanted to go 'all out' on the imagery for The Life Of A Showgirl because she is 'so proud' of the music. 'This is a full send. I care about this record more than I can even overstate.' Taylor revealed that the album cover is meant to depict what the 'end of [her] night' looks like on tour. 'My day ends with me in a bathtub - not usually in a bedazzled dress - but we try to keep it decent,' she joked. 'I wanted to glamorize all the different aspects of how [the Eras Tour] felt and [the The Life Of A Showgirl cover] is how that felt at the end of the night.' Taylor said she chose that image because it best represents the album, which centers around the feelings and experiences in her 'offstage' life. As revealed by Swift, the album's song titles are: The Fate Of Ophelia, Elizabeth Taylor, Opalite, Father Figure, Eldest Daughter, Ruin The Friendship, Actually Romantic, Wi$h Li$t, Wood, CANCELLED!, Honey and The Life Of A Showgirl. According to Swift's website, there are a total of four deluxe album variants that fans can purchase - all of which feature different cover photos of Swift and cost $17.99. A $29.99 vinyl, a $12.99 CD with a poster and a $19.99 cassette tape featuring the album's official album cover are also available for purchase. Other artwork for the album, all shot by Alas and Piggott, was also shared with fans on Wednesday. The Life Of A Showgirl marks a major musical departure for Taylor as it is her first album in over a decade that will not feature production by her go-to collaborator and co-songwriter, Jack Antonoff. Instead, she confirmed she co-produced her new album with pop music heavyweights, Max Martin and Shellback. Shortly before Max's involvement was confirmed, Taylor's eagle-eyed fans noticed that every song on the star's latest Spotify playlist, which included choice cuts from 1989, Reputation and Red, had been produced by Max. Max used to be a major collaborator with Taylor, but the two haven't worked together since recording music for Reputation, and Max was notably absent from the sessions to rerecord songs he had previously worked on with Taylor. During her appearance on the New Heights podcast on Wednesday, Taylor revealed that she recorded the new album while on her record-breaking Eras Tour, which ran from March 2023 to December 2024. The superstar said she made frequent trips to Sweden to work with producer Max Martin during her rare days off from performing around the globe. 'I would do like three shows in a row. I'd have three days off. I'd fly to Sweden, go back to the tour, and was actually working on this. 'I was physically exhausted at this point in the tour, but I was so mentally stimulated and so excited to be creating,' she explained. Travis, who was seated beside Taylor during the interview with his co-host and brother Jason Kelce, added: 'She was literally living the life of a showgirl.' 'That's why I called [the album] that. Nailed it,' the singer quipped as she playfully patted her boyfriend on the shoulder. Taylor read the entire 12-song track list for The Life Of A Showgirl aloud for listeners before revealing the 'significance' behind the era's orange color scheme and the 'theme' of the album.
