38 trains in Tamil Nadu to get additional stoppages from Aug 18: Union Minister
Union Minister L Murugan announced that 38 trains in Tamil Nadu will have additional stoppages starting August 18, following public demand. The central government has sanctioned significant funds for railway projects in the state, including station upgrades and new track construction. These improvements aim to modernize and expand railway infrastructure across Tamil Nadu.
ANI Indian Railways As many as 38 trains running across Tamil Nadu will have additional stoppages from August 18 based on public demand, Union Minister L Murugan said on Sunday.Talking to reporters here, Murugan also said the Centre has sanctioned about Rs 10 lakh crore in the last 10 years to implement social welfare schemes including modernisation and expansion of national highways, airports and ports in Tamil Nadu.
Murugan said he received petitions from the public demanding that express trains, superfast trains and passenger trains stop at additional railway stations in different parts of the state, and that he took the matter to the attention of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.Vaishnaw, who accepted the demands of railway passengers, issued the necessary orders for extra stoppage, the minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, said.The additional stoppages include Ambur for Chennai Central-Shivamogha Weekly Superfast Express. The Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express will stop at Gudiyatham and Vaniyambadi for two minutes each.
Similarly, the Coimbatore-Nagercoil Express Train will stop at Irugur and Singanallur. This train will also stop at the above mentioned stations in the opposite direction and additionally at Melappalayam. The Puducherry-Kanniyakumari Express will stop at Valliyur for the convenience of passengers.Murugan further said the Central government has given Rs 6,626 crore for the state's railway projects in 2025-26.During the Congress-led UPA regime between 2009-2014, this allocation was Rs 879 crore, he said.Under the Amrit Bharat Railway Stations Scheme, work was being carried out at fast pace to upgrade 77 railway stations in Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of Rs 2,948 crore.Under this scheme, Rs 800 crore has been allocated for the redevelopment of Chennai Egmore Railway Station and work is being carried out. Similarly, the reconstruction work of Madurai, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Katpadi and Salem railway stations is underway in full swing, a press release quoted him as saying.Murugan said work of laying new tracks for a distance of 2,587 kilometers was underway at an estimated cost of Rs 33,467 crore, and 10 new railway lines, 3 broad gauge railway lines and 9 double-track lines are being constructed.
Work on the Maduravoyal-Chennai Harbour elevated project was also progressing at 'full speed,' it quoted him as saying.

Authorities are aiming to establish Hyderabad as a centre of thriving nightlife in the near future, with the metro and the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation services running until 2 am within seven years. Special nighttime zones, with their own governance model and policing, are being planned in the city. Safe and secure nightlife is what the state government is promising. Within seven years, and with the right kind of boost, the city's 'night time economy' (NTE) is projected to grow to Rs 26,011 crore. In 2025, Hyderabad's NTE is estimated at Rs 8,500 crore. This means that the compound annual growth rate of NTE will be 20.4%. The improvement in nightlife is going to create 2.1-2.4 lakh jobs by 2031, it is projected. Among the sectors projected to create employment opportunities in NTE are hospitality, retail, entertainment, transport and mobility, security, and civic infrastructure. NTE is defined as businesses and activities between 6 pm and 6 am. In this economy, the service sector plays a key role and safety for women is of particular importance. In comparison, with 22% NTE growth in the last five years and after limited reforms, over 7 lakh jobs were created in Mumbai. While Hyderabad contributes 45-50% of Telangana GSDP, NTE's contribution to GSDP by 2031 is projected to be 2.9-3.1%. Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan told The Indian Express, 'Night Time Economy is one of the many projects which will further the growth of Hyderabad to a global city on par with London, New York and Berlin. Night-specific governance and smart regulation will be key to the development of Hyderabad.' Ranjan said that Hyderabad's NTE will be safe and inclusive. That is, 'there will be better policing at nighttime,' he said, to make nightlife accessible and safe for women. In Telangana's capital, talks are on between the administrative and planning wings, as well as police chiefs, regarding a plan to implement safe and secure nightlife. The government has currently identified night zones that include core parts of Hyderabad — Gachibowli, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Tank Bund and Charminar. Once policing is established well, there will be no need for special nighttime permits to operate in these zones, the planners envisage. The NTE boost is expected to happen by 'expanding economic activity during traditional hours to boost employment, tourism, infrastructure utilisation and quality of life,' Ranjan said. Nighttime access will be boosted by improving last-mile connectivity. This would mean extending the Hyderabad metro and Telangana State Road Transport Corporation networks to operate till 2 am in the first phase. The state is also expected to partner with ride-hailing platforms, including Uber, Ola and other operators. There will be special geo-tagged pickup and drop sites inside the night zones. The new NTE can be rolled out in 12 months. While the first three months will concentrate on non-alcoholic weekend-only pilots in zones including Charminar, Gachibowli and Madhapur, the next three months will be invested on alcohol-serving venues in zones including Jubilee Hills and Hitech City, centred around five-star hotels. In the last six months, the NTE will expand to include weekdays, too, in all the select localities. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is expected to make an announcement regarding the nightlife rollout soon, officials said.

Himachal monsoon session likely to be stormy affair

'The way the ruling party has been unjust to the people of the state, did not accept any demands of the employees, shut down institutions across the state or transferred already running institutions, adopted a highly negative attitude during the disaster, and registered false FIRs across the state will be taken up. Even false cases were filed against the BJP state president, BJP MLAs, and disaster-affected people,' he said. As per the state disaster management authority (SDMA), the state has recorded 261 deaths between June 20 and August 16, as the state witnessed 63 landslides, 74 flashfloods and 34 cloudbursts. The government will also be bringing in a resolution to once again appeal for special financial help from the central government. Even in 2023, the assembly had passed a resolution seeking ₹10,000 crore special relief aid from the Centre. Since then, the Congress has been accusing the BJP for not supporting the move. However, this time, the BJP delegation has met central leaders and urged for special relief package. The Congress is likely to corner the BJP over the area-specific disaster package demand. Government to bring bill against drug abuse The Himachal government is going to bring a bill against drug abuse, along with HP public examination (Prevention of unfair means) Bill, 2025, to check cheating in the exams. Also, amid the ongoing tussle between the state government and Raj Bhawan over the issue of appointments of vice-chancellor at two agriculture universities in the state, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (Nauni, Solan) and CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (Palampur), the government is likely to bring an amendment bill to withdraw the Himachal Pradesh Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry University (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The assembly, last year, had passed an amendment bill in the assembly regarding the appointment of VC's in both the universities, which was sent for the approval of the governor. The governor recently has sent the bill back with some objections, which has increased the conflict. The state government is likely to amend the bill in wake of the objections. Box: Security beefed up in wake of assembly session In wake of the Himachal Pradesh legislative assembly's monsoon Session, the district administration has divided the Vidhan Sabha and its surrounding area into 5 sectors and a sector officer has been appointed in each sector. Shimla district magistrate Anupam Kashyap gave these directions while presiding over a meeting with the sector officers of the administration and police department here on Sunday. 'The officers of the district administration and police department should keep a close watch to maintain law and order so that no kind of disorder arises during the session,' said Kashyap. Shimla senior superintendent of police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said that a comprehensive security plan has been prepared. He said that during the session, the police department will keep a close watch on every aspect in view of internal and external security. The security arrangements will be ensured in coordination with the CID.

Send Punjab plea on bills to 5-judge bench: Govt urges SC
NEW DELHI: The Centre has requested the Supreme Court to refer a petition filed by the Punjab govt seeking the court's intervention in two bills - one amending the Sikh Gurdwaras Act and the other Punjab Police Act - to the five-judge bench which is scheduled to hear Presidential Reference on SC's jurisdiction to fix timelines for the President and governors in granting, refusing or withholding assent to bills. For the Centre, advocate Kanu Agrawal requested a bench led by CJI B R Gavai to either tag the Punjab petition with the Presidential Reference or keep it pending for adjudication after the five-judge bench gives its opinion on the 14 questions raised by President Droupadi Murmu in her reference under Article 143 following SC's Apr 8 judgment. The bench posted the Centre's application for hearing on Monday. The Punjab govt had complained that the bills passed by the assembly two years back - The Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and The Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, 2023 - have been kept in limbo by the President after the governor arbitrarily referred these to her. The state challenged "the governor's referral of the two bills to the President of India for her consideration in contravention to the aid and advice of the council of ministers in the absence of any constitutional trigger or any extraordinary breakdown of democratic governance."
