NBA rumors: Insiders reveal Philadelphia 76ers' top offseason goal, impact on 2025 NBA Draft

Yahoo19 hours ago

The Philadelphia 76ers had fortune on their side after a disastrous season, moving up in the lottery to secure the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. With the franchise sticking by the old core of Paul George and Joel Embiid, intel is emerging on the franchise's goal this offseason.
The Stein Line's Jake Fischer and Marc Stein have both learned that the 76ers are focused on adding a 'dynamic young talent' this summer. It further confirms previous reports that the club has no interest in acquiring someone like All-Star forward Kevin Durant.

Philadelphia's desire to acquire a dynamic young player doesn't necessarily mean the franchise will keep the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Philadelphia is very open to moving down, but Stein makes it clear the club is only willing to move down a few spots.
While Rutgers guard Ace Bailey is widely considered the third-best prospect in the draft class, previous reports have suggested he might not be Philadelphia's target. Instead, the 76ers could have their eye on Texas Longhorns guard Tre Johnson.

Johnson, the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year, excelled last season as an 18-year-old. A former five-star recruit, he earned second-team All-SEC honors after averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. The 6-foot-6 guard shot 42.7 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from the perimeter.

The 19-year-old is well-regarded for his shot-making, demonstrating the ability to both shoot on the move and operate effectively as an off-ball scorer. He's also a capable ball-handler who could start alongside Tyrese Maxey or come off the bench as a sixth man. However, defense is one of his weaknesses.
Johnson checks multiple boxes that the 76ers' organization seems to be prioritizing this summer and he would likely be on the board if Philadelphia trades down with a team like the Utah Jazz (fifth overall pick) or the Washington Wizards (sixth overall pick). What's been made clear is that while the 76ers are keeping George and Embiid, they view this pick as an opportunity to start building for the future.

Flau'jae Johnson Reveals Why She and Angel Reese Aren't Friends Anymore

Flau'jae Johnson Reveals Why She and Angel Reese Aren't Friends Anymore originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For two seasons, Angel Reese and Flau'jae Johnson were close friends and teammates. The Chicago Sky forward and current LSU star guard helped lead the Tigers to their first-ever national championship back in 2023, but in the two years since, they've seemingly drifted apart. Advertisement 'I still support Flau'jae; we aren't as close as we used to be,' Reese said on her 'Unapologetically Angel' podcast last year. 'There's no hard feelings or anything. It happens. 'You don't have the best relationships with everybody, and don't always continue relationships with people. So I wish her the best always, I'm always going to support her. There's no love lost but we aren't as close as we used to be.' Though they no longer speak, Reese made it known there's no bad blood between the two. However, Johnson seemingly painted a different picture. LSU Lady Tigers guard Flau'jae Johnson, left, celebrates with former teammate Angel Reese after defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies in the 2023 women's Final Lee-Imagn Images During a recent appearance on 'The Breakfast Club' podcast, Johnson made it seem like the two actually had a falling out during Reese's final season at LSU. Advertisement 'We're not friends, but I mean that bond that we had, that thing that we did together, winning a national championship, you can never take that away from us,' Johnson stated. 'And so sometimes stuff happens, you wish it don't happen but it do. And you just got to grow. '… Yeah, it was a lot of media, it was a lot of locker room stuff. You know what I'm saying? Stuff that go on behind the scenes. But it happens, it happens… Sometimes stuff happens. You wish it don't happen, but it do.' While it's not known exactly what went down between the two, their mothers did feud publicly back in 2023 over social media. Reese's mother seemingly fired the first shot, taking a jab at Johnson's mother, who responded by insulting Reese and mocking her alleged 2.0 GPA at the time — something she carried with her and jabbed at after graduating last year. Which Nets are the most \

Which Nets are the most "untouchable" heading into the 2025 NBA Draft? The Brooklyn Nets are heading into the 2025 NBA offseason with many questions to answer, including who will be on the roster for the 2024-25 season. Within the month of June, Brooklyn will have to figure out who will be on the team through the upcoming draft and free-agency that should be begin after the conclusion of the 2025 NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. The Nets' draft strategy is one of the most interesting areas to dissect given that Brooklyn has five picks in the top-36, but are also rumored to be looking for ways to change things up prior to the draft beginning on June 25. With that being said, the Nets will have to figure out their free-agency strategy at the same time and that would include who the team would like to hold on to. When discussing which players on the roster are "untouchable," it's important to note that none of the players on the current roster are believed to be un-tradeable or anything close to that. For the purposes of this article, this writing will exclude anyone that is a free-agent, restricted or otherwise, this summer. With those perimeters being set, here are the most untouchable players on Brooklyn's roster: F Cam Johnson This entry comes with some irony given that Johnson was the subject of trade rumors throughout all of last season until the deadline passed with him remaining in a Nets uniform. There has been no indication that Brooklyn was trying everything possible to get Johnson off the roster and more to the point, Nets general manager Sean Marks spoke about how much Johnson means to the roster. Johnson, 29, is under contract for the next two seasons so if the Nets were to trade him, the team acquiring him would know that they would have one of the better 3-and-D wings in the league on a descending contract. Johnson is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.0% from three-point range in 57 games played. C Nic Claxton Claxton is an interesting player to evaluate for this Nets team given that he has done a lot of work to get to the player that he is right now, but the last couple of seasons have felt like his game is stagnating. Claxton hasn't been talked about as much as Johnson when it comes to trade rumors, but that doesn't mean that teams wouldn't be interested in a 26-year-old center who has three years and almost $70 million left on his deal. Claxton has been mainly discussed as a potential target of the Los Angeles Lakers because of the team's obvious need for a starting-level center after trading away Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic. Claxton is coming off a 2024-25 campaign in which he averaged 10.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 56.3% from the floor and 51.3% from the free-throw line. F Noah Clowney Clowney has shown some growth since being taken with the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after playing just one season at Alabama that teased his ability to be a floor-stretching power forward who can play some center. While Clowney has bulked up from 210 pounds to 230 pounds when he spoke to the media in October of 2024, he still showed that he has to improve his physicality if he is going to be the defender that many projected him to be. Clowney improved in almost all of his stats from his rookie season to his sophomore year, but there are still some questions that he has to answer as he continues his career in Brooklyn, such as if he can hold up over the course of an entire season. Clowney is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 9.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 35.8% from the field and 33.3% from three-point land. G/F Tyrese Martin This entry will probably shock anyone who has read the article to this point given that Martin was in danger of not making the roster during training camp before the Nets chose him for one of the last remaining spots. Martin went from being a training camp invite to a Two-Way player before finishing the season by having his Two-Way contract converted to a standard NBA deal. One could argue that Martin is destined to be an end of the roster kind of player in the NBA given that he didn't see any run in the NBA last season and has only played in 76 NBA games at 26 years old. However, for a Brooklyn team that needed anyone to contribute during the 2024-25 campaign, Martin stepped up to average 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per contest on 40.6/35.1/79.3 shooting splits. Not to mention that Martin has a team option for next of just $2.19 million (1.4% of the cap) so if the Nets are looking to spend big this offseason, they will need players like Martin on the roster to make the money work. F Tosan Evbuomwan Evbuomwan came to the Nets in January as a Two-Way player, but he made an impact right away by scoring at least 10 points in five of his first eight games. Evbuomwan signed with the team at a time when Brooklyn was looking for healthy players as much as they were looking for productive ones and Evbuomwan fit both of those categories at the right time. Part of the reason that Evbuomwan has a better chance than most of being on the roster next season is the fact that he signed a Two-Way deal for more than just last season, implying that the Nets want to keep Evbuomwan around for the long-term. It makes sense for Brooklyn to feel that way given that Evbuomwan is coming off a 2024-25 campaign with averages of 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 42.7% from the floor and 31.2% from deep.

Fever Coach Stephanie White Announces Unfortunate Roster Decision

Fever Coach Stephanie White Announces Unfortunate Roster Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Stephanie White and the Indiana Fever have struggled with All-WNBA guard Caitlin Clark sidelined with a quad strain, falling to 4-5 to begin the 2025 WNBA season. Advertisement However, for Saturday afternoon's rematch against Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty, the Fever could be returning some key players. On Friday, one day before Indiana vs. New York, White spoke to reporters and revealed that both Clark and Sophie Cunningham "should be available" for Saturday's game. However, DeWanna Bonner may be out due to personal reasons. With both Clark and Cunningham out for numerous games, the Fever brought in guard Aari McDonald via emergency hardship exception, which "allows any team to sign a player, with immediate effect, if a team drops below 10 game-eligible players at any time." Indiana Fever have to bid goodbye to guard Aari McDonaldGrace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images McDonald played well in three games with the Fever, averaging 11.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. But with Clark and Cunningham returning, Indiana will be moving forward without McDonald. Advertisement During the same press conference on Friday, White was asked about the Fever having to waive McDonald in order to "to meet the 10-player roster minimum and WNBA emergency hardship exception requirements." She confirmed the roster move. "She's gonna find a spot (on a roster)," White said. "I don't think that's a debate right now. She's been the ultimate pro. She came in ready to go. She had watched such a large amount of film just on her flight that you could tell already her high IQ. She's a dog and we're going to miss her certainly. What she brought to the table for us and being able to come in at the point guard position and just really impact us right away." White finished with: "But yeah, she's not going to have a problem finding a job." The Fever will take on the Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
