IAS officer Rinku Singh Rahi does sit-ups after facing backlash from lawyers for reprimanding clerk

LUCKNOW: A video clip purportedly showing IAS officer Rinku Singh Rahi doing sit-ups, holding his ears amid a protest by lawyers in Shahjahanpur, went viral on social media on July 29, sparking quite a buzz in administrative and legal circles in Uttar Pradesh.
The incident took place after Rahi, the 2022-batch IAS officer, recently appointed as the SDM of Puwayan tehsil in Shahjahanpur district, spotted a lawyer's clerk urinating in the open during an inspection.
Offended by the act, the officer allegedly reprimanded the clerk and made him do sit-ups, triggering a backlash from the lawyers who gathered in protest and allegedly forced Rahi to do the same.
In fact, the IAS officer had joined as SDM at 2 pm on July 29 and had set on an inspection immediately. The protesting lawyers said the man (clerk) had no choice but to relieve himself in the open due to the deplorable condition of the tehsil's public toilets.
Meanwhile, the SDM approached the lawyers and said that even if protests and demonstrations are allowed, the sound from loudspeakers should not reach the office.
During the interaction, the lawyers raised the issue of the clerk being made to do sit-ups and questioned: 'If the toilets are in such a filthy condition, where are the lawyers and clerks supposed to go?'
As tensions rose, SDM Rahi acknowledged the fault of the administration and took an extraordinary step. In front of the protesting lawyers and staff, he held his ears and performed five sit-ups, declaring: 'I, too, will not urinate in the open. I must follow the rules myself.'
He admitted that the poor state of sanitation in the tehsil was a failure on his part as an administrator. Despite attempts made by the lawyers to stop him, Rahi went ahead with the 'self-imposed punishment'.
He assured the gathering that immediate steps would be taken to clean and repair the toilets, and pledged to improve overall hygiene on the tehsil premises.
Rinku Singh Rahi served as a PCS officer before becoming IAS officer in 2022. His journey took a dramatic turn in 2009 during the Mayawati regime when, as a district social welfare officer in Muzaffarnagar, he exposed a Rs 100-crore scholarship scam.
This led to an attack on him by local gangsters, who shot him seven times, leaving him with a disfigured face, a damaged jaw and blindness in one eye.
Rahi, hailing from Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, continued his fight against corruption, filing RTI applications.
He cleared the UPSC exam in 2022 under the disability quota, securing the 683rd rank at the age of 40.

Delhi court rejects Satyender Jain's defamation case against BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj

A Sessions Court in Delhi on Thursday dismissed a revision petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyender Jain against a trial court order that had declined to take cognizance of his defamation complaint lodged against BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj. 'In light of the foregoing analysis, this court finds itself in full concurrence with the conclusions arrived at by the Ld. Trial Court, to the effect that sufficient ground does not exist to justify the invocation of jurisdiction for taking cognizance of the offence as defined and punishable under Section 356 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (criminal defamation). Accordingly, the instant revision petition is dismissed,' said Special Judge Jitendra Singh of Rouse Avenue Court in his order dated July 31. The case pertains to the alleged defamatory statements by Swaraj against Jain, based on Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at the latter's house and subsequent seizure of Rs 3 crore in cash and 1.8 kg of gold, along with 133 gold coins. The agency itself had posted the details of the seizure on its X handle. The statements by Swaraj were aired on news channels in October 2023. Judge Singh also said that it was incumbent upon an investigative agency such as the ED to act 'impartially and uphold the principles of fairness and due process'. Any dissemination of information by them must be accurate and free from sensationalism, he added. The court said that the statement in question is based on an official communication issued by a government agency (ED) through its verified social media handle. 'Hence, any official tweet is rather what comes from the horse's mouth itself,' it said. 'Upon consideration of the material on record, it is evident that the statement attributed to the proposed accused is a verbatim reiteration of a tweet published by the ED through its official social media handle,' the court said.

Solving Crime: When Mumbai cops stumbled upon a love story that turned a school headmaster into a contract killer

In 2010, acting on a crucial tip-off from a police informer, a Mumbai Crime Branch team nabbed a 36-year-old suspect in a murder case. It was an expected end to a routine case—or so the investigators believed. When the suspect was subjected to sustained interrogation, his revelations left the officers stunned, as the story that unfolded was nothing short of a Bollywood thriller. In August 2010, Mumbai Crime Branch Unit-5 officers arrested Shailesh Pandya, alias Sanjay Rabadi, from the Kurla area, suspecting his involvement in a murder case in Gujarat. Pandya was accused of killing a high-profile RTI activist, who was campaigning against illegal mining, by opening fire at him outside the Ahmedabad High Court. The Gujarat Police had arrested five key accused in the case, but Pandya had managed to dodge the police and flee the state. Crime Branch sources said that Pandya showed no remorse for his actions, but what shocked them was his origin story: how a twist of fate had turned an ordinary school headmaster into a contract killer. During the investigation, the police learnt that Pandya, who hails from Baspa village in Gujarat's Patan district, used to work as a headmaster in a primary school a few years before his arrest. Here, he allegedly fell in love with a fellow teacher. However, Pandya's affair with the teacher did not go down well with the villagers, as he was already married with two kids. Pandya and the teacher also hailed from different castes. According to the police, Pandya eloped to Bengaluru with the teacher. However, two months later, after her family filed a complaint, the Gujarat Police traced the couple and brought them back. Pandya was allegedly put behind bars in a fake case, and this upset the teacher, who allegedly died by suicide. It was when he walked out on bail that Pandya learnt about her death. Suspecting that she was murdered by her family members, in November 2008, Pandya allegedly opened fire on four people – two relatives of the teacher, his relative, and a villager. Later, one of these victims succumbed to their injuries, the police said. Running away from the police, Pandya went to Rajasthan, returned to Gujarat, and later arrived in Mumbai. Here, he allegedly got addicted to gambling, lost whatever money he had left, and returned to his hometown. It was back home that he allegedly met a police official, who offered him money to kill the RTI activist—a decision that sealed his fate and landed him in the Mumbai police's net.

‘Many laughed. Few believed': Congress attacks govt over ED raids on Anil Ambani; recalls Rahul's old charge

NEW DELHI: Congress on Friday intensified its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and referred to Rahul Gandhi's 2018 accusations against industrialist Anil Ambani, who is currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for a loan fraud case. Congress MP Manickam Tagore took to X and pointed to Rahul Gandhi's past allegations, where he accused PM Modi and Anil Ambani of orchestrating a "Rs 1,30,000 crore surgical strike on Indian defence forces." 'In 2018, my leader warned the nation: 'The PM and Anil Ambani jointly carried out a Rs 1,30,000 crore surgical strike on Indian defence forces… You betrayed India's soul.' Many laughed. Few believed,' Tagore said. — manickamtagore (@manickamtagore) 'ED has now summoned Anil Ambani in a Rs 17,000 crore loan fraud case, days after raids on his premises. The same Anil Ambani whose debt-ridden firm was picked for the Rafale offset deal — replacing HAL. Will Modi answer now?' he added. The agency filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) based on a case registered by Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing on November 11, 2024. Earlier, the agency carried out coordinated raids in connection with financial irregularities and alleged diversion of over Rs 10,000 crore in loans by various group companies associated with Ambani. According to ED sources, the investigation primarily revolves around the alleged diversion of approximately Rs 3,000 crore in loans extended by Yes Bank to Ambani's companies between 2017 and 2019. Officials said searches covered more than 35 locations in Mumbai, spanning 50 companies and 25 individuals. A Delhi-based ED unit is leading the investigation under the PMLA.
