Why is Rihanna in Belgium this weekend? Hint: Smurfs

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgium rolled out the blue carpet Saturday for Rihanna and other stars who turned out for the world premiere of the new Smurf movie.
Rihanna produced ″Smurfs″ and voices Smurfette in the summer family film, a live-action animated reboot that takes the little creatures on a Smurfette-led rescue mission to save Papa Smurf.
At Saturday's showing in Brussels, the visibly pregnant Grammy winner chatted with children, linked arms with someone dressed as her cartoon alter-ego, and joined the audience arm in arm with A$AP Rocky.
Film director Chris Miller held Smurf toys and other cast members at the premiere included James Corden and Dan Levy. Many of the guests wore a shade of Smurf-ish blue.
The movie premieres in the U.S. on July 18.
Belgian comics artist Peyo created the Smurfs — known here as ″Schtroumpfs″ — and the Belgian capital embraced the premiere with a weekend of events.
It took place in central Brussels, not far from a Smurf museum. The city's famed Mannekin Pis statue was dressed for the occasion as No Name Smurf. The city's Grand-Place held Smurf-themed events all weekend, and tourist buses and train cars were decorated in blue.

Beyoncé pauses show after flying car malfunctions, tilts during Night 1 in Houston

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter delivered a groundbreaking kickoff concert in Houston for her "Cowboy Carter" tour — powering through a technical difficulty that left her suspended midair, without missing a beat. The Grammy-winning singer kicked off her first concert in her hometown of Houston at NRG Stadium June 28 at 7:50 p.m. local time. The show marked her first Southern stop on her Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour. She is set to hit the stage one more night on June 29. Toward the end of the June 28 performance, as Beyoncé sang her hit single '16 Carriages' while soaring in a red car, a technical glitch caused the vehicle to tilt midair. She briefly paused the show telling everyone to "stop" repeatedly, before being safely lowered and landing the car among the audience. There were no injuries. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Eden🐘🌺 (@cozycarters) Shortly after, she returned to the stage cool, calm and collected. She joked, 'if I ever fall, I know y'all will catch me,' before carrying on with the show and closing it out as usual. During her Paris shows, she shocked fans when she brought out Miley Cyus and husband Jay-Z for surprise performances on the first and last night. Of course, Beyoncé first debuted her "Cowboy Carter" tour at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 28 with a 39-song set list. Her shows have been filled with family, fashion, different music genres, and most notably country music and cultural commentary. And the H-town opener show was no different. The nine-city tour will span the U.S. and Europe with the grand finale taking place in Las Vegas on July 26. 'F1' opens with $55 million, delivering Apple its biggest big-screen hit

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple has its first box-office hit. 'F1 The Movie' debuted with $55.6 million in North American theaters and $144 million globally over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, handing the tech company easily its biggest opening yet. Though Apple Original Films has had some notable successes in its six years in Hollywood — including the 2021 Oscar-winner 'CODA' — its theatrical results have been decidedly mixed. Misfires like 'Argylle' and 'Fly Me to the Moon' and big-budget awards plays like Ridley Scott's 'Napoleon' and Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' have been better at driving viewers to Apple TV+ than movie theaters. But 'F1' was Apple's first foray into summer blockbuster territory. It won a bidding war for the project from much of the production team behind the 2022 box-office smash 'Top Gun: Maverick.' Apple then partnered with Warner Bros. to distributed the film starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris and Kerry Condon. With a production budget over $200 million, 'F1' still has several laps to go to turn a profit. But for now, 'F1' is full speed ahead. ''F1 The Movie' puts the pedal to the metal in an impressive overperformance for this original summer movie that had one of the most comprehensive and exciting marketing blitzes in recent memory and it paid off big for the film,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore. Car racing movies have often struggled in theaters; crash-and-burn cases include Ron Howard's 'Rush' (2013) and Michael Mann's 'Ferrari' (2023). But 'F1' built off of the Formula 1 fandom stirred up by the popular series 'Formula 1: Drive to Survive.' And it leaned on 'Top Gun: Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to deliver another adult-oriented action thrill ride. Like they did in 'Top Gun: Maverick,' the filmmakers sought an adrenaline rush by placing IMAX cameras inside the cockpit in 'F1.' IMAX and large-format screens accounted for 55% of in its ticket sales. IMAX, whose screens are much sought-after in the summer, has carved out a three-week run for the movie. Reviews have been very good for 'F1' and audience reaction (an 'A' via CinemaScore) was even better. That suggests 'F1' could hold up well in the coming weeks despite some formidable coming competition in Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World Rebirth.' Universal's 'M3gan 2.0' had been expected to pose a greater challenge to 'F1.' Instead, the robot doll sequel didn't come close to matching the 2022 original's box-office launch. 'M3gan 2.0' collected $10.2 million in 3,112 theaters. Memes and viral videos helped propel the first 'M3gan' to a $30.4 million opening and a total haul of $180 million, all on a $12 million budget. Still, the Blumhouse Productions horror thriller could wind up profitable. The film, written and directed by Gerald Johnstone, cost a modest $25 million to make. A spinoff titled 'Soulm8te' is scheduled for release next year. M3gan 2.0' ended up in fourth place. The box-office leader of the last two weekends, 'How to Train Your Dragon,' slid to second with $19.4 million. The DreamWorks Animation live-action hit from Universal Pictures has surpassed $200 million domestically in three weeks. After a debut that marked a new low for Pixar, the studio's 'Elio' gathered up $10.7 million in sales in its second weekend. That gives the Walt Disney Co. release a disappointing two-week start of $42.2 million. 1. 'F1 The Movie,' $55 million. 2. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $19.4 million. 3. 'Elio,' $10.7 million. 4. 'M3gan 2.0,' $10.2 million. 5. '28 Years Later,' $9.7 million. 6. 'Lilo & Stitch,' $6.9 million. 7. 'Mission: Impossible — Final Reckoning,' $4.2 million. 8. 'Materialists,' $3 million. 9. 'Ballerina,' $2.1 million. 10. 'Karate Kid: Legends,' $1 million.

Brad Pitt and ‘F1 The Movie' zoom to $55.6 million in Apple's biggest box office debut

The Brad Pitt-led racing film 'F1 The Movie' sped to the top of the box office this weekend, another in a string of big summer movies that Hollywood hopes will keep driving people to theaters. The big-budget film from 'Top Gun: Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer hauled in $55.6 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to studio estimates. That's better than analysts had expected for a non-sequel racing movie. People who read pre-release audience surveys had anticipated a debut of $40 million to $50 million. Powered by the global appeal of Formula One racing, the film took in an additional $88 million internationally. Still, with a reported budget of more than $200 million, not including marketing costs, 'F1' will still need significantly more ticket sales to break even. Only three Hollywood films so far this year have grossed more than $500 million globally — 'A Minecraft Movie,' 'Lilo & Stitch' and 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' — and each of those opened above 'F1.' Nonetheless, with 'F1,' the iPhone maker has its first box office hit. While Apple TV+ has found critical success with its shows, including 'Severance,' 'The Studio' and 'Your Friends & Neighbors' — and notched its first best picture Oscar win in 2022 with 'CODA' — its films had not yet clinched box office gold. Its previous star-studded and filmmaker-driven movies have struggled at theaters, including the 2024 spy comedy 'Argylle' and space-age romantic comedy 'Fly Me to the Moon,' starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum. 'F1' benefited from a heavily promoted Imax run, which help make it seem like a must-see on the big screen. Imax screens accounted for 23% of the domestic weekend revenue for 'F1,' the cinema technology provider said Sunday. Around 55% of domestic sales came from large screen formats including Imax, Dolby Cinema and motion seats. As usual, Apple worked with a major studio to handle the theatrical release. 'F1' is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, adding to the studio's winning streak that includes 'A Minecraft Movie,' 'Sinners' and 'Final Destination Bloodlines.' Quality also helped. 'It's emotional, it's exciting, it's got romance, it's got humor,' producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Times earlier this month. 'It's the reason I got into this business — to make movies that thrill you on that big screen, that you walk out feeling you've been on a real journey and got lost for a couple of hours. That's the goal every time.' Strong reviews from audiences and critics bode well for the film's future grosses and its eventual performance on streaming for Apple. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the movie a grade of 'A,' while the movie holds a critics' score of 83% 'fresh' on Rotten Tomatoes. Not faring as well was Universal Pictures' murderous doll sequel 'M3GAN 2.0,' which debuted with a weak $10 million and landed in fourth place at the domestic box office, behind holdovers 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Elio.' The Blumhouse film was expected to open with around $20 million. It fell far short of the success of the original, which opened with $30 million in 2023 and eventually collected $180 million worldwide. Overall, though, it's been a strong last few months for the horror genre, starting with Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners,' which has now grossed $364 million worldwide, and followed by 'Final Destination Bloodlines' and zombie franchise revival '28 Years Later.' The staying power of movies like 'How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Lilo & Stitch' shows the continued draw of family-friendly films at the box office, which have been major winners since the spring. The exception has been Disney and Pixar's original animated movie 'Elio,' which notched Pixar's worst opening weekend ever last week. 'Elio' collected about $11 million Friday through Sunday, bringing its total to a poor $42 million in the U.S. and Canada for the $150-million animated picture.
