Pkl sterilisation centre faces glut of calls after SC ruling
With the phone ringing off the hook, the team had to stop taking calls. Routine work was also disrupted as they could not go out into the field to pick up dogs for sterilisation.
"Even though this direction is for Delhi-NCR, those affected by stray dogs in Panchkula have been calling us since the directions were issued. They are asking us to immediately pick up the dogs and keep them in shelters," said an operator.
An MC official said that people have been informed that since these directions are not for the district, they can only pick up dogs for sterilisation and leave them at the same place from where they were picked up after the operation, as per prevailing norms.
Mohit Gupta, founder of Solution Box, said, "The judgement has sparked a major debate for and against the issue. Animal protectors are crying foul, while RWAs are welcoming it. People presume that that the ruling will be effective from day one across the country and are requesting removal of stray dogs from their areas. It is not like that. Only time will tell what will ultimately happen."
Hailing the SC verdict, Mukesh Malhotra, a Sector 25 resident who was recently bitten by a stray dog, said, "I was a dog lover and used to feed stray dogs, but I do not anymore.

One day, I was walking and a dog bit me for no reason. I got five stitches on my leg. I have written to the MC and human rights commission for help, but to no avail so far."
Not agreeing with the SC's directions, Kashish, a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, rued, "Rather than relocating the stray dogs, the MC should improve infrastructure to curb bite cases. The local MC's sterilisation drive was halted for a long time.
They have no vaccination and anti-rabies programmes. They don't even have proper vehicles to pick up the dogs."
Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal said that about 300 to 400 dog bite cases are reported in Panchkula every month.
BOX: Make arrangements to keep dogs: Mayor
In light of the Supreme Court's decision, mayor Kulbhushan Goyal directed officials to make proper arrangements for dogs to stay, be cared for, and treated for up to eight weeks at the dog sterilisation and care centre in Sukhdarshanpur village. He said that a tender for the same would be floated in two to three days. The mayor also inspected the centre with MC commissioner R K Singh.

Dog lovers seek compassionate approach & humane solutions
Kochi: A group of dog lovers in Kochi organized a gathering to raise awareness about humane solutions to the stray dog issue, including sterilization and vaccination. The meet was organised in the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court order, which directed a blanket removal of stray dogs from the Delhi NCR. The gathering was held near Kaloor Stadium on Thursday evening. While the Supreme Court on Thursday reserved the order on an interim prayer seeking a stay on the order by its two-judge bench, the organizers said that their effort was to raise awareness on the real solution, which is humane care. The group held a silent march, holding a banner saying that shelters are for healing and not for hoarding. The group also raised placards stating that sterilization works and street dogs don't need cages but compassion. The group also held a candlelight vigil. The organizers added that their gathering was not directly a protest against the Supreme Court order, but to raise awareness on the real issue. SCdirective: Dog lovers plan peaceful protest at riverfront
Ahmedabad: In response to the recent Supreme Court directive to round up all stray dogs from Delhi's streets, members of Ahmedabad's dog-loving community have planned a peaceful protest on Friday evening at the Sabarmati Riverfront near the National Institute of Design (NID). Organisers emphasised that the gathering aims to highlight the legal rights of stray dog feeders, community animals, and the humanitarian aspect of community animal care. Devesh Trivedi, a stray dog rescuer and feeder, said, "After the SC decision, people who feed and care for stray dogs in the city are being increasingly harassed. This is especially true for tenants, who are being pressured to vacate homes. The number of distress calls we receive for interventions has increased." For many dog lovers, pet parents, and dog feeders, the current climate sparked deep concern on the fate of strays. Beyond routine feeding, several invested their own time, money, and emotional energy into the well-being of strays, ensuring they are vaccinated, sterilised, treated for illness, and kept safe. In Ahmedabad alone, there are over 500 stray dog feeders who also care for these animals. "There's a real sense of fear in the community right now, and people are worried about the dogs' safety. We have always ensured they are not aggressive, and have raised them like our own children.
