Debra Wright, the wife of a soccer team executive in England, was tragically killed in Spain over the weekend after a reported collision involving a jet ski and speedboat, the team announced in a statement Monday.
Ashton Town Football Club, which plays in Division One North of the North West Counties League, released a statement on social media confirming the death of 47-year-old Wright, the wife of team chairman Chris Wright.
"It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that on behalf of Ashton Town FC we announce the tragic death of Debra Wright, wife of Chris our Chairman who was tragically killed whilst on holiday in Spain on Saturday evening," a statement on X said.
"Our family are in mourning at this sad time and we ask for time for Chris and his family and everyone and the club to be able to start to come to terms with this tragedy. RIP Debra, fly high sweetheart."
Wright was aboard a jet ski being ridden by a friend near Playa de Los Toros, in Manilva, Malaga, at around 7 p.m. when the watercraft was struck by a speed boat, The Times reported, citing local law enforcement.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators told the outlet the driver of the speedboat allegedly had a "low" test reading for alcohol and that the individual had been detained on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. According to The Times, the person was released.
Tributes for Debra Wright poured in on social media.
The team announced Monday that its match against Burscough was postponed "as a mark of respect" for the Wright family.
"Our thoughts and love are with everyone who knew and cherished her," the team said.

2025 Women's Euros odds: Spain favoured ahead of defending champs England

The 14th edition of the European Women's Championship will begin on Wednesday in Switzerland, which becomes the sixth nation to host both the men's and women's Euros. Spain are the team to beat as holders of both the Nations League and World Cup. Now it remains to be seen whether they can complete the set. Advertisement The Spaniards are the favourites (7/4 on Betfair) to triumph in Switzerland and win a tournament secured by their male counterparts last summer. In a sense, this is the final frontier for Montse Tome's side given Spain have traditionally underperformed in this particular tournament. They haven't made it past the quarter-finals of any of the last three Euros but surely the expectations this time are different. Spain waltzed through qualification with no team in League A picking up more points or scoring more goals. Thirty-five-year-old Jenni Hermoso has been left out of the squad despite being the nation's record goalscorer. They have talent all over the pitch, though, and a plethora of treble winners with Barcelona suggest this could be the moment this team joins the ranks of the immortals. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, England are second favourites (47/10) to go all the way. They won this tournament when they hosted it three years ago and narrowly lost the World Cup final when they faced Spain the following year. They'll try to do better than England's men and actually win a tournament on foreign soil. England's coach, Sarina Wiegman, is the undisputed master of the Euros. She has won the tournament in charge of the Netherlands and England, winning an astonishing 12 out of 12 matches along the way. There are no sure things in sport but Wiegman in the European Championship is about as close to one as you can get. Once again, however, Spain stand in the way. Most outside observers believe that one of England or Spain will triumph over the coming weeks. Germany's women feel somewhat like Brazil's men in that they have a long and storied history that hasn't quite been emulated in more recent times. They are, in fact, the most successful nation in the history of this competition, having won it a staggering eight times. Like their male counterparts in 1966, they lost the last final after extra time at Wembley against the hosts. Germany have appeared in 9 out of the 13 Euros finals but find themselves, uncharacteristically, not necessarily expected to go the distance on this occasion. Advertisement The big blow for Germany (5/1) is the absence of Alexandra Popp. The attacking great retired in October of last year with a record of 67 goals in 145 international appearances, thus making her the third top scorer in the nation's history. Popp notched six goals in five appearances at the last Euros before an injury forced her to miss that Wembley final. Only time will tell how the country will fare without her goals at a major tournament. France (6/1) are deemed the fourth most likely team to succeed according to the bookmakers, although a lot has changed with the ousting of Wendie Renard and Eugenie Le Sommer, two of the country's longest-serving players. French supporters hope this changing of the guard will help the team buck the trend of history, which has seen them play in more major tournaments (12) without reaching a final than any other nation. Will number 13 prove lucky for them? The French open against the defending champs on Saturday. Sweden (14/1) are dark horses. They won the inaugural Euros in 1984, their only major competition win to date. Like England, the Swedes have reached the semi-finals of the last four major tournaments, an enviable record, to say the least. Kosovare Asllani figures to be crucial for Sweden, not least in terms of experience. She has made 18 appearances at the Euros, more than any other current player, and all of those have been as a starter. The Netherlands (22/1) do not have particularly short odds to win the 16-team tournament despite winning it in 2017. The Dutch are on a decent run of form that has seen them win 19 of their last 26 matches at major tournaments, a record only bettered by holders England. The most significant weapon in the arsenal of the Netherlands, Vivianne Miedema, has more goals in the WSL than any other player in history. With an astonishing 99 goals for her country, Miedema is closing in on becoming the first Dutch player, man or woman, to reach a century of international goals. It's hard to bet against her reaching that milestone in Switzerland, especially if the nation continues its record of going deep in tournaments. In a group containing England and France, though, an extended run is far from a given. Advertisement Betting/odds links in this article are provided by partners of The Athletic. ‘They know the community up here is with them,' former neighbors of Chapin family react to plea deal

The story of the 4 college students killed in Moscow, Idaho, hits home in Western Washington. Ethan Chapin, one of the students killed, grew up in Skagit County before attending the University of Idaho. The Chapin family did move away from the area several years ago, but that doesn't mean people have forgotten who the family was prior to the tragedy. 'I just remember those 3 little triplets running around in their yard up there,' Lisa Anderson, a former neighbor of the Chapins, said. Anderson says she also remembers seeing the Chapin triplets getting on and off the school bus. She of course isn't the only former neighbor KIRO7 spoke with that had nothing but nice things to say about Chapin family and Ethan. 'And they are an excellent family. They were all hard working, the kids,' Bonnie Thompson, another previous neighbor, said. Thompson says what happened to Ethan nearly three years ago still weighs incredibly heavy not only for her neighborhood, but really all of Mount Vernon and Skagit County. 'It's a very sad thing that's happened to a good family,' Thompson said. Many people in the county both on and off the record shared some strong feelings about the plea deal reached with suspected murderer Bryan Kohberger. Some hope the plea deal will help give the family closure, while others feel it isn't enough. 'No, I don't agree with that at all. He killed all of those kids,' Anderson said. Although there are mixed reactions about this plea deal, those who know and remember the Chapin family tell KIRO7 they will always have their backs. 'They know the community up here is with them,' Thompson said. 'And the whole neighborhood will always remember those kids,' Anderson said. KIRO7 has reached out to the Chapin family for comment about the plea deal and is still waiting for a response.

1-year-old girl drowns in pool at Jensen Beach home

JENSEN BEACH — A 1-year-old girl drowned in a pool at a Jensen Beach home the afternoon of July 1, according to law enforcement and rescue officials. Just after 3:30 p.m., Martin County Fire Rescue received a call about a toddler found in a pool in the 200 block of Northeast Flax Terrace in Jensen Beach, according to Fire Rescue spokesperson Cory Pippin. He said Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies were first on scene. Fire rescue crews arrived shortly after and took over medical treatment and began the process of preparing the girl for transportation. The call came from the girl's grandmother initially reporting a missing child, Sheriff John Budensiek said. While on the call, dispatchers asked her if she had a pool and if she had checked it for the child. He said she went out and looked around the area of the pool and did not notice her grandchild, but moments later dispatch heard her screaming 'Oh my God' several times before the phone line cut off. The girl was transported to Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital in Stuart. She was pronounced dead, sheriff's spokesperson Christine Christofek said. "There is no way to express the grief, the despair, and the hopelessness of doing CPR on an infant child," Budensiek said. "Our deputies, these fire rescue people, these nurses have all took turns shedding tears after doing their best to save a life." The Sheriff's Office was still investigating the house the evening of July 1 and "trying to piece everything together," he said. "This is three drownings in three weeks," Budensiek said. "These are horrific incidents that we're trying to process." On June 14, Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 3400 block of Southeast Hawthorne Street in Stuart regarding a 5-year-old boy who drowned in his neighbor's swimming pool, according to the incident report. On June 13, the Martin County Sheriff's Office responded to a home in the 9000 block of Southeast Mars Street in Hobe Sound regarding a 2-year-old girl who drowned in her family's swimming pool, according to the incident report.
