British tourist killed and their partner is seriously ill after falling from jet ski they were riding in the sea off Albania

A British tourist has died while another is in critical condition after jet-skiing in Albania. The 34-year-old man was confirmed dead by coastguards, who believe he lost control of the machine and came off his water scooter. A 31-year-old woman was also seriously injured and remains in critical condition in hospital. The holidaymakers were testing 'maneuvers' near the Kavaja Rock area in Durres when they fell into the water yesterday morning, it was reported in local media. An investigation has been launched to uncover the circumstances of the tragic accident. The pair are yet to be publicly identified but have had their initials shared by the police - the man was S.O. and the woman was V.B. The police said: 'Around 11:15, on 01.06.2025, the Port Durres Border Police services were notified that, in the area opposite the Kavaja Rock, two citizens who were sailing on a Jet Ski, are suspected of having lost control of the vessel during maneuvers and fallen into the water. 'The Border Police Services, after receiving the notification, immediately went by watercraft to assist the two citizens who had fallen into the water, transporting them to the port, with the aim of transporting them to the hospital. 'Preliminary verifications by the hospital emergency team, which was waiting at the port, resulted in one of the citizens sailing on the Jet Ski, specifically citizen SO, 34 years old, resident in England, having lost his life, while citizen VB, 31 years old, resident in England, was immediately transported to the hospital in serious condition. 'A special investigative group was immediately established and, under the direction of the Prosecutor's Office, work continues to clarify the circumstances and legally document the case.' However, several outlets had reported at the time the pair were discovered 'during a random patrol' with the vehicle's engine turned off. They added that that it was possible to pair were suffering from hypothermia after they had been at sea for an unknown number of hours, according to information from the port. Another site has reported that the couple were from Ghana but lived in England. The horrifying incident comes only weeks after another British tourist ran in to trouble on a jet ski while in Thailand. Vincent Zammitt, 26, from London, was arrested and fined for allegedly sinking a jet ski off the coast of Phuketin April after he rented the machine for a 30-minute ride. He said he was allowed to set sail into the idyllic turquoise waters, despite the jet ski not undergoing maintenance checks. The holidaymaker was carving up water when the jet ski's warning lights reportedly went off 15 minutes into the ride. The alarmed holidaymaker steered the watercraft back to shore but it capsized, leaving him stranded at sea in shark-infested waters. A rescue team was called to the scene after he failed to return to the beach after 30 minutes. Footage shows volunteers arriving on jet skis to save Mr Zammitt, seen wearing a life vest as he sat on the overturned machine. But Mr Zammitt is convinced that the rental company set him up with a dodgy jet ski to fleece him - and that the police were in on it too. Phuket is among Thailand's most popular tourist destinations known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, it is also a notorious enclave of criminal activity, with greedy locals taking advantage of naive visitors. Jet ski scams have become a notorious money spinner for locals, with rental companies working in cahoots with a few apparently corrupt police to extort vast sums from holiday makers for non-existent damage to the machines.

ICE identifies jet ski suspects in Air Force cadet candidate's death as illegal immigrants

The suspect and her alleged accomplice linked to the jet ski hit-and-run death of an Air Force cadet candidate over Memorial Day weekend have been identified as illegal immigrants, according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official. During a Wednesday news conference in Grapevine, Texas, Joshua Johnson, acting field director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Emergency Removal Operations in Dallas, confirmed that 21-year-old Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez and 21-year-old Maikel Coello Perozo are both illegal immigrants from Venezuela. Gonzalez was allegedly operating the jet ski that struck and killed 18-year-old Ava Moore on Sunday at Grapevine Lake. Moore was a United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) cadet candidate and part of USAFA's Class of 2029, according to the military school. "It's my understanding that both the individuals crossed the southern border in 2023 or 2024," Johnson said. "They were arrested at the time of entry, processed on a notice to appear, and then released on their own recognizance." He added that ICE has lodged immigration detainers against the suspects, and that after the criminal justice proceedings against them in Texas are complete, they will be processed for removal. Capt. Joseph Quintero, game warden at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, announced that Gonzalez has been charged with second-degree felony manslaughter. Perozo has been charged with collision involving damage to a vehicle and hindering apprehension, both misdemeanors, after allegedly driving away from the scene with Gonzalez. He said both were arrested in Dallas on Tuesday, and that the relationship between them remains unclear. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton first announced that the pair were in the country illegally on Tuesday night. "We've arrested an illegal alien for killing Ava Moore and another illegal alien connected to her death," Paxton wrote in a Tuesday post on X. "Ava Moore's senseless death was caused by an illegal alien who should have never been in our country in the first place," Paxton wrote in a news release. "My heart breaks for Ava's family and friends, and my prayers are with them as they face this tragedy," Paxton continued. ICE did not respond to a request for comment. "We are thankful for the help of fellow law enforcement officers from the Texas Attorney General's Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Dallas Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations," the Texas Game Wardens said in a statement. Paxton added that his office "will continue to work with local, state, and national law enforcement partners to secure justice for Ava." According to FOX 4, Moore was just weeks away from her lifelong dream of joining the military. She was scheduled to leave for Air Force basic training and was home in Texas visiting family during Memorial Day weekend. Moore was reportedly a student and star basketball player at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado. "You know, we talked throughout the course of the year that at some point in her career she was going to be a four-star general because she loved it," her coach, Ke'sha Blanton, told the outlet. "She made those around her better." Blanton said she is feeling sadness and anger over Moore's death. "They took a bright, bright star from our lives," she said. Investigators said two women were on a jet ski that struck Moore on Sunday evening. According to police, a passenger on the jet ski remained on the scene, while the operator of the craft allegedly fled and then left with a male. The pair allegedly crashed into a vehicle during their escape from the scene. Moore was pulled to shore and treated for severe head trauma before being taken to a nearby hospital where she later died, the outlet reported. "Our thoughts are with Ava's family and friends during this difficult time. Texas Game Wardens remain committed to keeping our public waters safe," the Grapevine Police Department shared in a statement. Stepheny Price is a writer for Fox News Digital and Fox Business. Dubai Police seize 32 jet skis in water safety campaign

A field inspection carried out by Dubai Ports Police officers has resulted in dozens of jet ski seizures and a number of fines being issued. The operation prompted 32 jet skis to be confiscated due to severe damage, involvement in previous accidents, or being deemed unfit for use. Additionally, 39 notices were issued for safety breaches and non-compliance with designated operating routes. The campaign, carried out at Fishing Harbour 3 and targeting jet-ski rental companies, is part of Dubai Police's aim to ensure companies comply with safety regulations. Brig Dr Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, Director of the Ports Police Station, said the campaign had uncovered administrative violations by some companies, including a lack of electronic documentation and unclear rental procedures. Using an unlicensed 'watercraft' or operating in Dubai waters without authorisation comes with a fine of Dh5,000 ($1,360). Operating one with an expired licence can draw a Dh1,000 fine, while renting out an unfit watercraft could cost the culprit Dh5,000. Jet skis have long been a safety issue, with a number of deaths recorded each year. In 2022 in the US, jet skis were the second most common type of watercraft involved in any accident, after motorboats. In nearly 1,000 jet-ski accidents in 2022, there were 54 deaths and 549 injuries. A number of jet ski-related deaths have been reported in the UAE where the watersport has become a popular leisure activity, the most recent being when a person was killed and another injured in 2020 in a jet-ski crash in Dubai. The fatal incident took place near The Palm. In August the previous year, a man had to be rescued after he crashed his jet ski into the breakwater at a beach in Dubai. The man, 20, was riding his jet ski at Al Mamzar Beach Park when the accident took place. Fujairah police also reported a death in 2018 when a jet skier died after falling off his vehicle in the waters near Fujairah city's corniche, and back in 2011, Dubai Police confiscated 42 jet skis and four boats in a month after stepping up enforcement. The push came after an Emirati boy, 17, was struck and killed off The Palm. Most of the impounded craft were unregistered, police said at the time.
