Midland ISD announces name, mascot for new middle schools

Yahoo21-05-2025
May 21—MIDLAND — Midland ISD is excited to announce the names and mascots for two new middle schools opening as part of the 2023 Bond Program: John "Randy" Storie Middle School and Midland Middle School. These names reflect deep community input and honor the rich history and legacy of education in Midland.
The name Midland Middle School was selected for the campus currently housing Midland Freshman High School, located on Gist Avenue. The mascot will be the "Dawgs," a nod to the "Bulldog" tradition at Midland High School. This name maintains continuity as students transition to Midland High School. The school's colors will remain aligned with those of Midland High School, supporting unity and tradition across campuses.
"The committee selected Midland Middle School to ensure a seamless transition for students moving on to Midland High School, while honoring the history of the current Midland Freshman building," said Cyndi Pyles, Executive Director of School Leadership.
The campus located on Neely Avenue — currently home to Legacy High School — will be renamed John "Randy" Storie Middle School, with the mascot "Buffalo," a news release said.
The name honors the late Randy Storie, a beloved and influential band director who served at Lee High School for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the Lee Band achieved national acclaim, including performances at the Tournament of Roses Parade, Carnegie Hall, and three Presidential Inaugural Parades. The Buffalo mascot symbolizes strength, resilience, and unity — attributes Storie exemplified and instilled in his students. It also serves as a meaningful tribute to his alma mater, West Texas A&M University, whose mascot is the Buffalo.
"The buffalo mascot symbolizes resilience and reflects the determination we strive to instill in our students," Pyles said in the release. "It also pays tribute to the legacy of Randy Storie; a proud graduate of West Texas A&M University and former Lee High School Band Director."
The naming process for both schools followed district policy and emphasized transparency and community engagement. Survey results, committee discussions, and input throughout the district played a critical role in the final recommendations. The names were approved by the Board of Trustees at the May regular board meeting.
Brand development for each campus — funded through the 2023 Bond Program — will continue in preparation for their official openings.

Stock up, stock down after the Bills' 38-0 preseason loss at Bears

The Buffalo Bills (0-2) were hoping to shake off last week's preseason loss to the New York Giants with a matchup against Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears (1-0) on Sunday. Buffalo, like most teams that are hoping to compete for a Super Bowl, have not seen some of their starters on the field during this preseason and it looks like those absences could make a difference. The Bills not only lost to the Bears to drop to an 0-2 record in the preseason, but they lost 38-0 as it seemed like none of the three phases showed up over the course of the game. The Bills fell behind 7-0 after the first quarter, but at halftime, Buffalo trailed Chicago 28-0 as the Bears looked to be operating on all cylinders with Williams leading the way. While the preseason doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of teams looking to make it to the postseason in some capacity, but a showing of this magnitude has to be disappointing to head coach Sean McDermott and company. Either way, here is the stock report for the Bills following Sunday's blowout loss to the Bears in the second of three preseason games: Stock Up: RB Frank Gore Jr. Gore came into this season looking to earn a roster spot behind starting running back James Cook and backup Ray Davis and this game had to do something to help his case. Gore not only carried the football eight times for 51 yards (6.4 yards per carry), but he also caught four of five targets for 30 yards to show his all-around game in this washout of a contest. Stock Down: Bills QB Room Mitchell Trubisky started this game for the Bills and while he did not perform well, the rest of the quarterback room did not do much to improve on what he did or didn't do. In terms of passer rating, Trubisky (64.6) played the best of the three quarterbacks that took the field, but Trubisky, Mike White, and Shane Buechele combined to throw for just 103 yards on 28 attempts. Stock Up: CB Jordan Hancock Like Gore, Hancock is looking to earn his way onto the Bills once training camp is over and is performance against the Bears should grant him some favor amongst the coaching staff. Hancock was a tackling machine against Chicago as he piled up eight tackles (five solo) including a tackle for loss to show how willing he is to get involved in every single play. Stock Down: Bills Defense Similar to the aforementioned poor performance of Buffalo's quarterbacks, the defense was poor in almost every facet of the game. It's tough to pick specific areas in which the Bills' defense struggled, but it's important to note that Chicago had 10 drives, the same as Buffalo, but they gained 348 more yards and ran 40 more plays than the Bills did.

Caleb Williams, Bears starters set to make preseason debuts vs. Bills

The Chicago Bears will host a joint practice with the Buffalo Bills on Friday, and both teams will cap off the week with a preseason game at Soldier Field. Chicago's starters, including quarterback Caleb Williams, didn't play in the preseason opener last week versus the Miami Dolphins. However, head coach Ben Johnson announced on Wednesday that the starters will be out there against Buffalo on Sunday. 'Ben Johnson said that everyone is going to play Sunday vs. Buffalo in the Bears 2nd preseason game,' Courtney Cronin of ESPN said on X. 'That includes Caleb Williams and the starters who sat out last week.' During his press conference, Johnson also added why he is deciding to play Williams versus the Bills after sitting him out last week. 'Well, last week — and really, all through camp — I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get him [Williams] up to speed,' Johnson said on Wednesday. 'And by the plan that we had a week ago, we were able to get him probably somewhere between 80 and 100 more reps than we would've been able to do had he played in the game.' 'This week, it's a different schedule. Different length of time in terms of in between games and all that. And so, our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week, they will be playing this week.' Johnson's decision to sit Williams and the starters last week received some criticism. The first-year head coach now believes that his starters need to play a couple of drives of preseason action to get ready for the season, which doesn't kick off until September 8 versus the Minnesota Vikings.. After working with the Bills this week, Chicago will wrap up the preseason at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs.
