Golf GTI Edition 50 Becomes VW's Fastest Car At Nurburgring

Miami Herald13-06-2025
Volkswagen has proved yet again that it's one of the hot hatch authorities, with its new Golf GTI Edition 50 setting a new record for production VWs around the Nurburgring. Referred to as a "near-production test vehicle" by VW, this special GTI set a time of seven minutes and 46.13 seconds. That surpasses the time of seven minutes and 47.31 seconds set by the Golf R 20th Anniversary edition, a time achieved in 2022.
Unlike the all-wheel-drive Golf R, the GTI sends power to the front wheels only, yet it's always remained fun to drive despite its FWD setup. The record-breaking time was set across the 12.9-mile route of the course, and an even quicker time of seven minutes and 41.27 seconds was achieved over the slightly shorter 12.8-mile stretch.
The GTI 50 was not quite able to dethrone the Honda Civic Type R, which remains the FWD hot hatch king. The hottest Civic completed the 12.9-mile lap in a time of seven minutes and 44.88 seconds. Although we don't know if this GTI improves upon the normal GTi's 241 horsepower, it's highly unlikely to match the Type R's 315 hp, which is more Golf R territory.
Still, the GTI 50 gets close, thanks to an optional Performance package with lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Potenza Race tires from Bridgestone. These are wrapped around lightweight forged wheels, which lower unsprung and rotating masses. A performance-tuned chassis is also part of this package, which was equipped to the GTI that completed this latest effort at the Green Hell.
Benny Leuchter was behind the wheel of the GTI Edition 50 for this run, and was left blown away by the car. He was a good choice for the job, having driven the Golf GTI Clubsport S for the brand's first lap record nearly a decade ago. He did the same in the Golf R 20 Years in 2022.
"The entire setup of the Golf GTI Edition 50 means you can drive the ideal line of the Nordschleife with high precision," said Leuchter. "If you really want to be fast on the track known as the 'Green Hell', the car also has to compensate for the typical bumps in the ground and reach very high cornering speeds. This is exactly what the Golf GTI Edition 50 achieves in perfection. The aplomb with which it masters the peculiarities of the legendary Nordschleife is cool: the GTI is instantly stable over the entire 20.8 kilometers."
Leuchter said he would never have believed he could beat the Golf R's lap time in a FWD GTI.
A full reveal of the record-breaking GTI Edition 50 is set for June 20.

Dealership Salesman Says Automakers Are 'Shorting' the Market. Then He Points to His Most Popular Volkswagen as a Prime Example

'I'm convinced these car manufacturers are intentionally shorting the market,' a frustrated Volkswagen salesman says while standing in front of the only 2025 Tiguan SEL R-Line he says his dealership has received in months. Is he onto something? The TikTok from salesman Teddy Delgross ( @teddyautomotive ) of Sendell Volkswagen in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, shows him next to the lonely Tiguan on his lot, which was reserved by customers weeks before it arrived. Stay informed with our newsletter every weekday back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . 'This is literally the car that everyone wants, and they send us one every three months,' he says. 'If they send us 30 of these, they'd be sold within a week.' What Makes the 2025 Tiguan So Popular? In the video, Delgross highlights the appeal of the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line, a midsize SUV that has quietly become one of VW's best-selling models in the U.S. market. The new Tiguan delivers a premium experience at a competitive price, boasting features like semi-aniline leather seats with massage functionality, a heads-up display, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. 'For 40 grand,' Delgross says, 'you get everything.' Trending Now 'Cars R Stupid:' Man Buys a Car. Then He Realizes the Windows Are Controlled by a 'Touchscreen the Size of an Almond' 'Sending It Back:' Man Orders a Blue Chevrolet SS Sedan From Carvana. Then He Starts Peeling It Volkswagen has not yet fully released all U.S. specifications or pricing for the 2025 Tiguan, but press materials describe a complete redesign built on the MQB evo platform, with improved infotainment, driver assistance systems, and powertrain efficiency. U.S. models are expected to follow suit. According to Consumer Reports , the current-generation Tiguan has long been praised for its balance of value, space, and European handling feel, positioning it well against popular rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Inventory Issues Persist The TikTok clip has resonated because it taps into a lingering frustration: many dealers and buyers still feel the squeeze of low inventory, even as the industry supposedly rebounds from pandemic-era supply chain disruptions . Volkswagen of America sold 74,383 Tiguans in the first half of 2025, according to Automotive News sales data, making it the brand's top-selling vehicle in the U.S. for several years running. However, production has faced headwinds. Volkswagen confirmed delays in Tiguan assembly in late 2023 and early 2024 due to software integration challenges and parts shortages at its Wolfsburg, Germany plant, which is the primary source of the redesigned model. While overall inventory levels in the U.S. auto market have improved and are returning close to pre-pandemic norms— October 2024 saw about 81 days' supply, only one day above 2019—the situation remains uneven. Cox Automotive's data show that by early May 2025, total new-vehicle inventory had fallen to 2.49 million units, and days' supply dropped to just 66 days, both markedly lower than last year's figures. This suggests some models, especially those in high demand, are still being limited in supply, potentially as a strategic effort by automakers to preserve pricing amid rising demand. What Is Scarcity Pricing? Delgross's speculation echoes what some analysts have quietly suggested: automakers, after experiencing record per-vehicle profits during the chip shortage, may now see value in keeping supply tight. This idea isn't without precedent. Automakers made more money selling fewer cars in 2021–2022 than they did pre-pandemic, and some brands adopted allocation models that favored margin over volume. Volkswagen was among those who restructured production planning and dealer allocations during that time. Critics argue this strategy has morphed into an artificial scarcity model, especially in high-demand segments like crossovers. However, defenders say it's a rational response to uncertain parts availability, regulatory changes, and shifting consumer preferences. Notably, VW's internal push toward electrification , with major resources devoted to the ID.4 and new Scout-branded EVs, may also be pulling production attention away from combustion-powered models like the Tiguan. Reuters reports that the company plans to expand EV production capacity in North America, and recent investments in Canadian battery supply chains could shift internal priorities for years to come. For buyers, the result is a confusing and sometimes frustrating experience. While MSRP on the Tiguan remains competitive, popular trims like the SEL R-Line are difficult to find without advance deposits or preorders. Volkswagen Customers Are Fed Up With Touch Controls. Now They're Suing

Volkswagen is facing a potential class-action lawsuit over the capacitive touch buttons in the 2021-2023 ID.4. The complaint , filed in New Jersey by two owners, alleges that the vehicle's steering wheel controls are defective for being too sensitive and can easily reactivate the adaptive cruise control with "a mere light brush of the hand over the steering wheel's haptic controls." One owner experienced her ID.4 accelerating when pulling into a parking space after their hand brushed against the sensor. The accident caused over $14,000 in damage to the EV's undercarriage and injured the driver's hand. The other owner collided with their garage while trying to park, damaging the door and the electric vehicle. Despite only two people being named as plaintiffs, the filing contains numerous complaints filed by other ID.4 owners with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The complaints highlight unintended acceleration issues, emergency braking system failures, and injuries resulting from crashes caused by those alleged problems. Many of the reports occurred while drivers were maneuvering to park, with many even acknowledging they might have brushed against the button. Here's one filed August 2023 : When leaving a neighborhood street, I turned the steering wheel approximately 180 degrees to pull out from a parking spot next to the curb. Upon releasing my grip a bit on the steering wheel (to let it rotate back to 'straight') my right thumb grazed the cruise control activation button (which is normally on the left side of the steering wheel). Since I had been using cruise control earlier in the drive, the cruise control resumed and the car accelerated without my providing any pedal input. Luckily I realized what had happened and pushed the brake pedal to cancel cruise control. Others weren't so lucky. Another complaint filed in January 2024 reported: The car has now 3 times over the last year suddenly lurched forward while braking and pulling into a parking spot. The first time it went over a curb and into a yard. We thought it could be a mistake, but my wife, driving, has never had an accident in 40 years driving. Happened again, and we thought maybe it had something to do with cruise control and hepatic sensitive buttons. But we keep that system off unless we are on the highway. This time it lurched forward but she managed to get it to stop just as it touched the parked car in front. No damage. Foot was on the brake as coming to a stop. This car should not be allowed on the road. The lawsuit alleges Volkswagen violated several warranty and consumer protection laws in Massachusetts and Connecticut due to this alleged defect. The automaker has already stated that it is discontinuing the technology in its vehicles due to complaints, but that doesn't address the cars currently on the road. Popular automaker rolls out crypto payments for customers

Popular automaker rolls out crypto payments for customers originally appeared on TheStreet. Volkswagen Group Singapore (VGS) has teamed up with FOMO Pay, a major payment company, to let people pay for their cars and services via digital currency. This is the first time an automotive distributor in the city-state has done this. VGS said it is committed to offering payment options that are ready for the future and flexible, so customers can now use Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins like USDT and USDC, as per their press release. VGS, the authorized distributor for Volkswagen, Skoda, and CUPRA, announced on August 14 that the move was in response to rising consumer adoption of digital assets in Singapore, where approximately 26% own cryptocurrencies. According to reports as of 2024, crypto payment volumes in Singapore reached nearly $1 billion in Q2 2024, marking a surge in everyday transactions. Despite positive sentiment, challenges such as technical complexity, security concerns, and limited merchant acceptance persist, with 67% of current holders planning to increase usage. As the demand for faster, more secure, and globally interoperable payment methods grows, the integration of digital payment tokens (DPTs) aims to improve the customer experience by providing speed, convenience, and choice. However, the transactions will be limited to SGD 4,500 per day, with a maximum of SGD 13,500. FOMO Pay's business-level infrastructure will handle payments safely and give users real-time exchange rates. The solution will allow people to make partial payments on new cars and for services after the sale. Rose Wang, the head of digital payments at FOMO Pay, said that the partnership fits with Singapore's goal of becoming a top digital economy.
