Julaihi: Sarawak in talks with MCMC to boost MySRBN using Jendela infrastructure
KUCHING (July 9): The Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication is in ongoing discussions with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to expand the reach of the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) service by tapping into the federal-led Jendela tower infrastructure.
Its Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the initiative aims to strengthen internet coverage in rural Sarawak by leveraging both state and federal telecommunication towers.
'In fact, at the moment, MySRBN is using the infrastructure provided by SMART towers. But we have also spoken to MCMC to allow MySRBN to utilise Jendela towers,' he told reporters when met at the MD Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) @ Sarawak at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
He explained that the locations for both SMART and Jendela towers do not overlap, presenting an opportunity to improve coverage by integrating both networks.
'Where there is a SMART tower, we don't place a Jendela tower. So we have different locations. To ensure better coverage, we are proposing that MySRBN not only use towers provided by SMART but also those under Jendela,' he said.
Julaihi noted that MCMC has responded positively to the proposal, describing the commission as an equal partner with a shared goal of expanding internet coverage in rural areas.
Earlier in his opening remarks, Julaihi reaffirmed the state's commitment to bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas through investments in digital infrastructure and programmes like MySRBN.
'My ministry is directly involved in providing digital infrastructure that is very much needed, especially in rural areas, as part of our strategy to bring them into the mainstream of development,' he said.
He revealed that Sarawak has injected RM2.3 billion to complement federal efforts in improving connectivity, particularly through the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).
A total of 618 SMART towers are being constructed across the state under the Sarawak Linking Urban, Rural and Nation (Saluran) initiative.
'To date, 603 out of 618 SMART towers have been completed, with 502 already active or 'on air', and 405 activated in stages using Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology,' he said.
The MOCN approach, he explained, enables multiple telecommunication providers — including CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, YTL and TM — to share tower infrastructure, ensuring broader and more flexible network coverage.
Julaihi highlighted that MySRBN, introduced in March 2021, uses Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology to deliver high-speed internet to previously unconnected rural communities.
As of now, 32,000 homes in Sarawak are connected to MySRBN.
'MySRBN stimulates economic growth in rural Sarawak. One of the impacts we've seen is the creation of new opportunities for local entrepreneurs to engage in online business,' he said.
He added that efforts are underway to promote the service more widely.
'We are still conducting extensive campaigns to expand MySRBN to all villages and longhouses in rural areas,' he said.
Julaihi said a recent MySRBN campaign in Pulau Bruit was well received, indicating strong demand for the service among rural communities.
'I believe rural residents, especially those involved in MSMEs, will be able to participate more actively in the future if such connectivity infrastructure can be implemented more comprehensively,' he said.
He reiterated that digital transformation depends not only on awareness but also on the physical infrastructure that enables participation.
'We are targeting around 7,000 towers across Sarawak to ensure full coverage by 2030. Right now, we've reached more than 5,000,' Julaihi said.
He affirmed that the state government remains committed to ensuring rural communities are not left behind in Sarawak's digital economy goals, as outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030.

BlackBerry expands Apac HQ to boost cyber-resilience
KUALA LUMPUR: BlackBerry Ltd is expanding its secure communications division's Asia Pacific (Apac) regional headquarters in Malaysia, reinforcing the company's long-term commitment to the nation and the broader Asean region. Following the successful launch of the MCMC and BlackBerry Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (CCoE) in Cyberjaya in March 2024, BlackBerry is now scaling its presence across three strategic locations: Cyberjaya, central Kuala Lumpur, and Mont Kiara. The expansion includes a new sales and marketing office, as well as a dedicated Regional Support Centre staffed by over 50 technical experts, enabling 24/7 support and professional services across the Asia-Pacific region. 'As Malaysia strengthens its position as a regional hub for digital resilience and innovation, we are proud to expand our Apac secure communications headquarters here – now with enhanced 24/7 support for a region tackling complex risks,' said BlackBerry in Apac senior vice-president Tash Stamatelos. He added that this expansion supports both BlackBerry's regional growth strategy and Malaysia's national priorities including capacity building, enhanced disaster response, and the implementation of sovereign, military-grade communications to combat rising espionage. This shared vision for bolstering digital resilience is echoed by Malaysia's regulators, with MCMC welcoming BlackBerry's expanded footprint as a catalyst for deeper public–private collaboration. Building on the MCMC and BlackBerry Cybersecurity Center of Excellence in Cyberjaya, the expansion strengthens Malaysia's position as a regional hub for secure communications while enhancing the nation's ability to support government, critical infrastructure, and industry against evolving cyber threats. Further building on Malaysia's growth as an international hub, this announcement follows Canada's government commitment of C$3.9 million (RM12 million) in multi-year investment for cybersecurity training at the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, announced at Apec in November 2024. The first phase of this programme will commence in November 2025 with the globally recognised Certifications for Leadership in Cybersecurity course. Additionally, a recent partnership with EC-Council will offer self-paced learning courses for Malaysian civil servants, further enhancing national cyber capabilities.

Smart unlimited monthly travel pass for RM68 for Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR: Highway concessionaire Amanat Lebuhraya Rakyat Bhd (ALR) has launched the Smart Unlimited Travel Pass or Merdeka Unlimited Travel Pass (MUTP) for one month in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day. The travel pass, valid from Aug 16 to Sept 16 can be purchased for a one-off payment of RM68 for users of the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (Smart). Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said the launch of the MUTP proves that public facilities can be offered in an inclusive and people-centred spirit, in line with the Malaysia Madani principles that prioritise inclusivity and the well-being of the people. "ALR's initiative allows frequent Smart users who commute to work daily to enjoy savings of up to RM64 a month, compared with the average monthly toll payment which can reach RM132. "The launch of this travel pass is very meaningful in the spirit of celebrating our 68th National Day and Malaysia Day. "This one-month offer also clearly sends the message that public facilities can and should be provided with an inclusive and people-centred spirit, consistent with the Malaysia Madani principles that prioritise inclusivity and the well-being of the people. "In addition, the Works Ministry through the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA), always supports the government's aspiration to provide the best facilities to the people, especially highway users. Thus, the MUTP is an excellent example of such an initiative," he said. Nanta said this after officiating the MUTP Launch Ceremony in conjunction with the 68th Independence Day at the Smart Management and Tunnel Operations Complex here today. Also present were MHA director-general Datuk Sazali Harun; and ALR Group chief executive officer, Muhammad Nizam Alias. Nanta said that, on average, commuters using the Smart Tunnel to travel to work daily make around 44 trips a month (one-way fare RM3). "In addition (to the savings through MUTP), it provides fast access to the city centre via the Smart Highway, which accommodates an average of 19,000 vehicles per day, while supporting the operation of the world's only dual-function tunnel combining traffic passage and floodwater management. "This initiative demonstrates how industry players, especially in the infrastructure sector, can take proactive steps to help the people manage the cost of daily living, particularly in urban areas," he said. Nanta added that the MUTP not only strengthens public trust in the highway industry, but is also in line with the Malaysia Madani principle that emphasises a balance between economic growth and social justice, while fostering values of respect and compassion in service delivery. "The Smart Tunnel service provided today is one of the country's best engineering facilities, proven to have a significant impact in flood management as well as improving urban mobility. "The Smart Tunnel is not merely an infrastructure project, but also a symbol of local innovation recognised internationally, among others by the UN Habitat Scroll of Honour Award, the British Construction Industry Award, the Asean Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award, and listed by CNN as one of the 'Most Impressive Tunnels in the World'.

Malaysia internet coverage hits 98.82% with 5G expansion plans
KUALA LUMPUR: Internet and communication coverage in populated areas across Malaysia has reached 98.82 per cent as of July 31, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. For 5G coverage, he said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed the construction of 7,489 transmitter sites, collectively providing 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas. 'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7 per cent,' he said in reply to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang) at Dewan Rakyat today. Dr Zulkafperi had wanted to know the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as the strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas such as Sungai Burong, Sekinchan, and Permatang, with particular focus on those within the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency. Fahmi said that in Tanjong Karang, internet and communication coverage in populated areas stands at 99.75 per cent, while the Sungai Besar constituency has recorded a coverage rate of 99.99 per cent. Additionally, he noted that the second 5G network by U Mobile began operating on July 14, with 1,232 sites upgraded to support 5G coverage. On the JENDELA 1 initiative, Fahmi said it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for JENDELA 2 are currently being reviewed and will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). According to Fahmi, the planning process requires assessment of suitable service delivery methods that are fit-for-purpose, as well as the capability of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the project's capital and operational expenditures. 'The types of service delivery solutions currently under consideration are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of Internet services via satellite technology,' he explained. Meanwhile, Fahmi said MCMC has undertaken various efforts, including the implementation of the Safe Internet Campaign to raise public awareness, including among schoolchildren, about the dangers of online harm. He added that the ministry is also working on amending existing laws to promote more responsible Internet use and to ensure that crimes such as scams and cyberbullying can be effectively addressed. - Bernama
