Malaysia internet coverage hits 98.82% with 5G expansion plans
For 5G coverage, he said Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) has completed the construction of 7,489 transmitter sites, collectively providing 82.4 per cent coverage in populated areas.
'The number of 5G subscriptions has exceeded 28 million users, and the mobile 5G broadband penetration rate per 100 people stands at 82.7 per cent,' he said in reply to Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang) at Dewan Rakyat today.
Dr Zulkafperi had wanted to know the latest progress and details on the government's 5G rollout programme, as well as the strategies to further expand coverage into rural areas such as Sungai Burong, Sekinchan, and Permatang, with particular focus on those within the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency.
Fahmi said that in Tanjong Karang, internet and communication coverage in populated areas stands at 99.75 per cent, while the Sungai Besar constituency has recorded a coverage rate of 99.99 per cent.
Additionally, he noted that the second 5G network by U Mobile began operating on July 14, with 1,232 sites upgraded to support 5G coverage.
On the JENDELA 1 initiative, Fahmi said it is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025, while plans for JENDELA 2 are currently being reviewed and will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2025 by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
According to Fahmi, the planning process requires assessment of suitable service delivery methods that are fit-for-purpose, as well as the capability of the Universal Service Provision (USP) Fund to finance the project's capital and operational expenditures.
'The types of service delivery solutions currently under consideration are expected to include the construction of new towers and the provision of Internet services via satellite technology,' he explained.
Meanwhile, Fahmi said MCMC has undertaken various efforts, including the implementation of the Safe Internet Campaign to raise public awareness, including among schoolchildren, about the dangers of online harm.
He added that the ministry is also working on amending existing laws to promote more responsible Internet use and to ensure that crimes such as scams and cyberbullying can be effectively addressed. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has requested to remove nearly 38,000 false contents and 8,000 posts related to race, religion and royalty (3R) from social media platforms in a three year period. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said th ministry takes the issue of the spread of false information on social media seriously, especially when it involves attempts to manipulate sentiments related to the race, religion, and royalty (3R) by irresponsible parties, including political troll accounts. "From Jan 1, 2022 to July 1, 2025, a total of 7,846 3R-related contents and 37,845 false contents were removed by platform providers at MCMC's request under Section 233 (for improper use of network facilities or services) of the Communications and Multimedia Act. "Each removal action is carried out based on existing legislation, regardless of the political background or beliefs of the individual, to ensure that freedom of speech is not abused. "The final assessment is also subject to the platform providers according to their community guidelines," he said in a written reply to Kampar member of Parliament Chong Zhemin. He said the MCMC works closely with the police to enforce the Communications and Multimedia Act and other existing laws. "Action can be taken against any individual under Section 233 under the Communications and Multimedia Act who misuses application services, including social media, to create and disseminate false or extremely offensive content with the intent, among others, to hurt, harass, or disturb others. "To further strengthen online safety, Fahmi said MCMC had introduced licensing requirements for internet messaging and social media service providers to obtain the Application Service Provider Class License, effective Jan 1, 2025," he said. Fahmi also said to mitigate online harms, service providers are encouraged to adopt the Code of Conduct (Best Practices) for Internet Messaging and Social Media Service Providers, which was issued by MCMC on Dec 20, 2024.

Gobind: 13MP Highlights Technology, AI To Boost Malaysia's Digital Transformation
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) clearly emphasises technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in line with the government's push to accelerate the country's digital transformation, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He said one of the key priorities highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the development of the AI Nation Framework, which aims to fully leverage the country's 5G network to create digital solutions, including smart city initiatives using existing data. 'The 13MP also emphasises 'data commission'. The Prime Minister has made it clear that the concept of a data bank is closely linked to digital trust, among other related areas. 'These are steps that we see as supporting the aspiration to achieve AI nation status in the near future,' Gobind told reporters after launching the 5G Enterprise and AI City Grant today. He said this initiative will be featured at the upcoming Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL25), scheduled for Sept 17–19, which will serve as a platform to showcase Malaysia's smart city transformation and foster collaboration among city leaders, innovators, and digital solution providers. Leveraging world-class 5G connectivity, the minister said Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have been tasked with leading the AI Cities initiative, which builds upon and complements the Smart Cities programme under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. 'I hope these efforts have — and will continue to — lay the groundwork for real, actionable innovation. By aligning strategic leadership with on-the-ground execution, we have seen how national initiatives can translate into meaningful local impact. 'The grants awarded today are a direct outcome of this alignment — where policy meets purpose, and vision meets implementation,' the minister said. Fahmi Prays For Rafizi's Son Swift Recovery
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has prayed for the speedy recovery of the son of former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who was assaulted at a shopping mall this afternoon. In a post on X, Fahmi, who is also PKR Information Chief, expressed sadness, shock and anger over the news. 'As a father with children around the same age as Rafizi Ramli's son, I am also deeply concerned about my family's safety. 'I pray for Ben's speedy recovery, may Allah grant safety to Rafizi and his family, and may the attackers be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice,' he said.
