Brescia have licence revoked for bankruptcy, kicked out of Italy's Serie C

New York Times5 hours ago
Brescia have had their licence revoked for bankruptcy and will not be allowed to start next season Italy's third-tier Serie C.
The club, who last played in Serie A in 2019-20, were relegated from Serie B in May after being deducted four points for financial irregularities.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed on Thursday the club's licence had been revoked and they would not be allowed to compete in Serie C in 2025-26. The statement outlined unpaid debts to the league, players and coaching staff.

It means Brescia are now likely to have to form as a new entity, which many Italian clubs have done previously, and look to begin next season in Serie D.
The club are owned by Massimo Cellino, the former Leeds United owner, who, alongside his son and board member Edoardo, has been handed a sixth-month ban.
Brescia had finished 15th in Serie B but after being found to have breached the rules, the points deduction resulted in them dropping into the automatic relegation places.
That gave a reprieve to Sampdoria who, instead of dropping into the third tier for the first time, entered a relegation playoff against Salernitana. The second leg of that tie was abandoned after crowd trouble in the second half with Sampdoria leading 2-0 (4-0 on aggregate) at the Arechi Stadium. The abandonment meant Sampdoria survived to play in Serie B next season.
Former players of note at the club include Roberto Baggio, Pep Guardiola, Gheorghe Hagi, Andrea Pirlo and Mario Balotelli.

Montana changes course, opts in to NCAA's House settlement for this year

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — The University of Montana is changing course and will opt-in this year to the NCAA's House settlement. The recent settlement means athletic programs across the country are free to start paying millions to their athletes in one of the biggest changes in the history of college athletics. The deadline for schools around the country to opt out was Monday. Montana was originally planning to opt-in during the 2026-27 academic year. The school this week explained that it switched after rosters were grandfathered into the final approved settlement so that roster cuts weren't necessary. Athletic director Kent Haslam told MTN Sports the 'initial settlement had no provision for accommodating roster limits through what's now called 'designated student-athletes.' But as it unfolded, there was an opportunity to preserve our (current) roster limits by grandfathering in your current squad sizes. That completely changed our mindset.' The settlement means schools will be able to make payments to athletes for use of their name, image and likeness (NIL). A handful of schools have decided to wait it out at least a year to see how things develop, including legal risks and Title IX concerns. The Ivy League said in January that its eight schools — which do not award athletic scholarships — will not participate. Military rules prevent Navy, Air Force, and Army from compensating athletes through name, image and likeness deals. But alongside the academies are others choosing to watch the settlement unfold from the sidelines during year one. Nebraska-Omaha and Montana were originally among the schools opting out. Rival Montana State has opted in, raising the recruiting stakes for two programs that are often among the best teams in the Football Championship Subdivision. Haslam told MTN Sports: "Everything surrounding the House settlement we were ready for. We were excited for everything around revenue sharing and scholarship and financial and how that's restructured. The hesitancy was around roster limits, and once that got resolved and we could make sure that we were ready to do it, we opted in.' ___

Dr. Phil's Anti-Woke TV Network Sues Christian Broadcaster After Filing For Bankruptcy

Merit Street Media, a cable television network founded by daytime reality star Phil McGraw, aka Dr. Phil, filed for bankruptcy Wednesday and accused its Christian distributor of sabotage almost a year after it launched with a promise of being anti-woke. McGraw launched Merit Street Media last yearin partnership with distributor Trinity Broadcasting Network and promoted a slew of lineups with popular names such as Nancy Grace, Bear Grylls and Steve Harvey, along with a news team. The TV psychologist's company had high ambitions of becoming 'one of the most widely distributed startup networks in modern history.' 'Merit Street Media will be a resource of information and strategies to fight for America and its families, which are under a cultural 'woke' assault as never before,' Dr. Phil said at the time. 'I love this country and I believe family is the backbone of our society. Together we are going to stand strong and fight for the very soul and sanity of America and get things that matter back on track.' McGraw appeared on the platform last year to conduct a softball interview with then-GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, and in January, he accompanied Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on raids in Chicago and Los Angeles that were featured by the network. Behind the scenes, Merit Street Media faced hard times that led to the network filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Merely months after its launch, McGraw's company laid off about 40 employees. Last month, approximately 40 more employees were laid off. 'Those left are being told very little. We are understandably nervous and have no idea as to the future of the network,' staffers told Mediaite during the first wave of layoffs. The Professional Bull Riders pulled its programming off Merit Street Media in November, claiming the network failed to pay rights fees. In a lawsuit filed in the Northern District of Texas, Merit Street Media attributed its financial woes to Trinity Broadcasting Network, accusing it of 'sabotage' and abusing its power as the controlling shareholder shortly after Merit Street Media formed. A spokesperson for Merit Street Media told The Hollywood Reporter that Trinity Broadcasting Network failed to 'provide clearly agreed-upon national distribution and other significant foundational commitments critical to the network's continuing success and viability.' 'This fresh voice on the national stage is inexorably going dark, going off the air because TBN has refused to honor its commitment to transfer its must carry rights and thereby provide national distribution for the network—Merit Street,' the lawsuit read. The lawsuit also alleged Trinity Broadcasting Network had provided Merit Street Media with 'shoddy production services,' citing teleprompter malfunctioning, an incomplete control room and a lack of engineers. 'Simply put, as a result of TBN's conduct, Merit Street has nowhere to send its broadcast signal and nowhere to air its programming no matter how great it may be,' the lawsuit read.
