SGPC puts on hold decision to display ex-PM Manmohan Singh's portrait in museum at Golden Temple
SGPC Secretary Partap Singh said that in the recent meeting of the executive committee of the SGPC, the installation of Dr Manmohan Singh's portrait in the Central Sikh Museum was approved.
"However, following objections raised by various groups, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has ordered the matter to be put on hold for the time being," he said, adding that the SGPC respects the sentiments of the Sikh community and believes that a general consensus is essential on the matter. He further said the decision regarding the portrait will be reconsidered in a future meeting of the executive committee.
In his letter addressed to the SGPC, Rajoana expressed his opposition to the move, stating that Dr Manmohan Singh during his tenure as Prime Minister represented a political party that he termed responsible for atrocities against Sikhs.

In compliance with the order received from the Five Singh Sahibaan at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and with the grace of Guru Sahib Ji, after completing the assigned service, I went to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, offered Ardaas, and submitted a report regarding the completed service, Bains said. For the cleaning and improvement of the roads leading to Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, Gurdwara Kotha Sahib Patshahi Nauvin, and Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib, I pledge to contribute Rs 20 lakh from my discretionary funds and, as a personal offering, one month's salary, he said. Bains also said he would make every possible effort, personally and through the government for beautification works around other sites linked to Guru Tegh Bahadur. As a humble Sikh, I request forgiveness for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly in the past, and seek blessings to serve religion, the community, the nation, Punjab and society to the greatest extent in the future, he said. The Sikh clergy summoned Bains for organising entertainment performances, involving dance and music, at a programme held in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on July 24 to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth of the ten Sikh Gurus. The Punjab Language Department organised the event, held at Tagore Hall in Srinagar. At the meeting held at the Akal Takht secretariat, Bains apologised for the Srinagar event, which was seen as a deep affront to Sikh sentiments. The Sikh clergy asked him to immediately visit Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, the birthplace of Guru Tegh Bahadur, in Amritsar, to inspect and ensure repairs and cleanliness on the approach roads and nearby streets. This is the first time that the Akal Takht mandated infrastructure development as part of a religious sentence.

Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Wednesday performed ardas (Sikh prayer) for atonement at Akal Takht after completing his tankhah (religious punishment) awarded to him by the highest Sikh temporal seat for violation of Sikh maryada at an event organised by the Punjab government's language department to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur in Srinagar. Speaking to the media outside after submitting a letter at Akal Takht secretariat, the minister said, 'The service assigned to me by Akal Takht Sahib has now been completed. I have performed ardaas before Guru Sahib to seek forgiveness for my mistakes and have humbly requested that Guru Sahib bless me with the strength and wisdom to serve the Panth, the nation, Punjab, and humanity.' In a letter submitted to the Akal Takht jathedar, Bains said, 'As per the orders of the five Singh Sahibans, for the cleanliness and improvement of the paths leading to the birthplace of the ninth Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji—Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, Gurdwara Kotha Sahib Patshahi Nauvin Walla, and Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib—I pledge to contribute ₹20 lakh from my discretionary funds and, as a personal offering of devotion, one month's salary as a minister.' 'For the beautification works around the places associated with Guru Teg Bahadur, I will make every effort, both personally and through the government, to the best of my ability', the letter further added. A video of the event held on July 24, purportedly showing singer Bir Singh performing on stage and members of the audience dancing, sparked outrage. Bains was summoned by the Takht with clarification on August 6 and was awarded tankhah.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann flags off first train of women sarpanch, panch delegation to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded
Patiala: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday flagged off the first train with a delegation of 500 women sarpanches and panches heading to Maharashtra to pay obeisance at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded and participate in the National Convention of Women Panchayats. Terming it as a 'red letter day', the CM said the delegation departed from the state on Wednesday for Maharashtra to participate in the National Convention of Women Panchayats. He said the delegation comprised representatives from high-performing panchayats. The purpose of the visit was to enable Punjab's women sarpanches and panches to gain new experiences through mutual discussions with panchayat representatives from other states, he said, adding that this would enable these elected representatives to further ensure the holistic development of their respective villages. "The panchayats are the 'Pillars of Democracy' and in villages, schools, dispensaries, veterinary hospitals, and other public welfare arrangements are directly managed under the supervision of the panchayats. In light of this, the move was crucial, as all the departments related to village development function under panchayat oversight," said Mann and expressed hope that the visit would boost the confidence of women representatives and help them gain new insights for the development of villages. Meanwhile, the CM said the govt would also facilitate these women to pay obeisance at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded. He reiterated that this initiative was undertaken to commemorate the 350th martyrdom day of the ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, adding that the govt would bear the entire cost of boarding and lodging for these women. Mann said this special train had been arranged to facilitate their visit to the sacred site, adding that two more such trains would be sent shortly. He emphasised that Nanded Sahib holds immense spiritual importance for every Punjabi, and many aspired to visit it at least once in their lifetime. He added that these women exemplify the spirit of women empowerment , and the govt wanted to honour their contributions by enabling them to undertake this pilgrimage.
