Up, Up And Away! 160 Fans Celebrate As Superman Soars Into The DC Universe With Fan Screening
The invitation-only event, organised in partnership with Warner Bros. Singapore and held at Shaw Lido on 9 July, saw full-house attendance – a testament to Superman's endearing image in the eyes of fans far and wide. The air was abuzz with excitement, as Super-fans waited for their turn at the photo wall, basking in the shared anticipation to catch the much-awaited feature directed by James Gunn.
The atmosphere of enthusiasm was amplified through attendees wearing various iterations of the hero's iconic outfit, and the distribution of a special edition Superman comic. Five lucky winners also walked away with exclusive giveaway prizes, including Superman and Krypto Funko Pop figures, and a pin.
Once the film began, fans gasped, laughed and cheered as Superman soared through Metropolis in the pursuit of justice. The movie's eclectic combination of witty dialogue, cute comedy, sincere heart and vibrant action pieces drew electric responses from the crowd, all of whom were deep in engrossment. When the movie ended, the audience broke into applause, an endearing but apt response to the welcome of the caped superhero back onto the silver screen.
Superman follows our titular Big Blue Boy Scout, who must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. Striving to live up to the values of truth, justice and kindness that he champions, he finds himself coming up against a world that views these as old-fashioned. When Superman gets drawn into conflicts at home and abroad, with the help of Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) and his faithful canine companion, Krypto, he will have to navigate tech billionaire Lex Luthor's (Nicholas Hoult) schemes as well as other superpowered beings in the form of Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría).
Directed by Gunn, whose work on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (2014-2023) and the original DCEU's Suicide Squad (2021) has equipped him well to work on large ensemble films in the comic book genre, the movie showcases Gunn's unique blend of irreverent humour with heartfelt storytelling. His flair for stylised chaos and sharp dialogue certainly brought both spectacle and soul to the screen in Superman .
Though the fan screening of Superman only lasted for two hours, the enduring legacy of the Man of Steel will no doubt continue to be celebrated in cinematic history, teasing more to come for Gunn's DC-verse. Much like the attendees of this fan screening event, Super-fans can look forward to leaving the theatre enthused and excited for what the future holds for the Man of Tomorrow.

'Weapons' Opens Fire With US$42.5 Million Debut, 'Freakier Friday' Lands With US$29 Million Start
The late-summer box office delivered two big wins over the weekend, with Zach Cregger's original horror film Weapons dominating at No. 1 and Disney's Freakier Friday securing a record-breaking PG-rated opening in August. Weapons (2025) Weapons , from New Line and Warner Bros., surged well beyond expectations to debut with US$42.5 million domestically, over US$10 million above pre-release projections. Overseas audiences also turned out in force, adding US$27.5 million for a global launch of US$70 million. The R-rated thriller defied the genre's usual limits abroad, posting strong results in typically horror-resistant territories across Europe and Latin America. It also became Warner Bros.' seventh No. 1 opening of the year, and its sixth consecutive film to gross US$40 million domestically on opening weekend. Starring Julia Garner ( The Fantastic Four: First Steps , Ozark ), Josh Brolin ( Avengers: Endgame , Dune: Part Two ), Alden Ehrenreich ( Ironheart , Oppenheimer ), Austin Abrams ( Do Revenge , Paper Towns ), and Amy Madigan ( Bull Street , Go for Grandma ), Weapons follows a teacher whose students mysteriously vanish in the middle of the night, and a grieving father who suspects her involvement. Cregger, who broke out with 2022's Barbarian , wrote, directed, and produced the film after New Line outbid rivals in a heated US$38 million package deal. The marketing campaign kept the film's major twist under wraps, and the gamble paid off — Weapons earned a rare A- CinemaScore for a horror title, alongside a 96 per cent Rotten Tomatoes critics' score. Premium large formats, including IMAX, accounted for a hefty 34 per cent of its domestic gross. In second place, Freakier Friday , the sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy, Freaky Friday , scored US$29 million domestically, marking the best-ever August debut for a PG-rated (or G-rated) film. The Lindsay Lohan ( Mean Girls , The Parent Trap ) and Jamie Lee Curtis ( Halloween Ends, Everything Everywhere All at Once ) reunion also brought in US$15.5 million internationally for a US$44.5 million global start, nearly matching its US$45 million production budget before marketing. (L to R) Julia Butters, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sophia Hammons in Freakier Friday (2025) Directed by Nisha Ganatra ( Transparent , Late Night ), the sequel introduces a multigenerational twist, with Lohan's and Curtis' characters swapping bodies with the daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter of Anna (Lohan's character). Julia Butters ( Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , American Housewife ), Sophia Hammons ( Up Here , The Absence of Eden ), Manny Jacinto ( The Good Place , The Acolyte ), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan ( Slanted ) co-star. Nostalgia played a major role in its appeal; the original film has recently climbed Disney+'s most-watched list, while strong word-of-mouth, reflected in an A CinemaScore and 93 per cent audience score, drew in both families and general audiences. Together, Weapons and Freakier Friday delivered one of the strongest double-openings of the season, offering a rare boost for both the horror genre and studio comedies in the streaming era. James Gunn Pens Next "Super Family" Movie, As 'The Batman 2' Sets Spring 2026 Shoot
The future of DC films is slowly coming together, starting with The Batman Part II . The sequel to 2022's The Batman , which is separate from James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DC Universe (DCU) — formerly known as the DC Extended Universe — is set to begin shooting in Spring 2026 with a theatrical release planned for 1 October 2027. Director Matt Reeves completed the script in June, following a one-year delay from the very initial 2025 opening. While details remain under lock and key, Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz will reprise their respective roles as the Caped Crusader and Catwoman in the forthcoming instalment, alongside Colin Farrell as The Penguin. 'To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,' Gunn wrote on Threads last year on the scheduling pushback. '7 years between Alien and Aliens . 14 years between Incredibles . 7 years between the first two Terminators . 13 years between Avatars . 36 years between Top Guns . And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3 .' The news comes from a letter to Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders, which also confirmed that the DC Studios co-head is writing the next entry in the Super family, Supergirl , plus Clayface and the next Wonder Woman . In terms of television projects, the 10-year vision for the DCU includes The Penguin , the upcoming new season of Peacemaker , and Lanterns , starring Kyle Chandler ( Friday Night Lights ) and Aaron Pierre ( Musfasa: The Lion King ) as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as well as Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner. Under Gunn's rule, no project will move into the pre-production and production processes until the screenplay is finished, as opposed to Marvel Studios' approach, where it enters production in the scripting phase. Next on the list is Supergirl , based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series. Led by House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock, the Craig Gillespie-directed comic book adventure will introduce the titular superheroine as 'a total mess'. 'She's a total mess. I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background,' Gunn explained. 'He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that.' The second DCU cinematic instalment is set to hit theatres on 26 June 2026, building on 2025's Superman , which is the first DC film to surpass US$300 million domestically in three years. The previous milestone was achieved by, coincidentally, The Batman , due for a sequel on 1 October 2027.
