'Weapons' Opens Fire With US$42.5 Million Debut, 'Freakier Friday' Lands With US$29 Million Start

Geek Culture2 days ago
The late-summer box office delivered two big wins over the weekend, with Zach Cregger's original horror film Weapons dominating at No. 1 and Disney's Freakier Friday securing a record-breaking PG-rated opening in August. Weapons (2025)
Weapons , from New Line and Warner Bros., surged well beyond expectations to debut with US$42.5 million domestically, over US$10 million above pre-release projections. Overseas audiences also turned out in force, adding US$27.5 million for a global launch of US$70 million. The R-rated thriller defied the genre's usual limits abroad, posting strong results in typically horror-resistant territories across Europe and Latin America. It also became Warner Bros.' seventh No. 1 opening of the year, and its sixth consecutive film to gross US$40 million domestically on opening weekend.
Starring Julia Garner ( The Fantastic Four: First Steps , Ozark ), Josh Brolin ( Avengers: Endgame , Dune: Part Two ), Alden Ehrenreich ( Ironheart , Oppenheimer ), Austin Abrams ( Do Revenge , Paper Towns ), and Amy Madigan ( Bull Street , Go for Grandma ), Weapons follows a teacher whose students mysteriously vanish in the middle of the night, and a grieving father who suspects her involvement. Cregger, who broke out with 2022's Barbarian , wrote, directed, and produced the film after New Line outbid rivals in a heated US$38 million package deal. The marketing campaign kept the film's major twist under wraps, and the gamble paid off — Weapons earned a rare A- CinemaScore for a horror title, alongside a 96 per cent Rotten Tomatoes critics' score. Premium large formats, including IMAX, accounted for a hefty 34 per cent of its domestic gross.
In second place, Freakier Friday , the sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy, Freaky Friday , scored US$29 million domestically, marking the best-ever August debut for a PG-rated (or G-rated) film. The Lindsay Lohan ( Mean Girls , The Parent Trap ) and Jamie Lee Curtis ( Halloween Ends, Everything Everywhere All at Once ) reunion also brought in US$15.5 million internationally for a US$44.5 million global start, nearly matching its US$45 million production budget before marketing. (L to R) Julia Butters, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis and Sophia Hammons in Freakier Friday (2025)
Directed by Nisha Ganatra ( Transparent , Late Night ), the sequel introduces a multigenerational twist, with Lohan's and Curtis' characters swapping bodies with the daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter of Anna (Lohan's character). Julia Butters ( Once Upon a Time in Hollywood , American Housewife ), Sophia Hammons ( Up Here , The Absence of Eden ), Manny Jacinto ( The Good Place , The Acolyte ), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan ( Slanted ) co-star. Nostalgia played a major role in its appeal; the original film has recently climbed Disney+'s most-watched list, while strong word-of-mouth, reflected in an A CinemaScore and 93 per cent audience score, drew in both families and general audiences.
Together, Weapons and Freakier Friday delivered one of the strongest double-openings of the season, offering a rare boost for both the horror genre and studio comedies in the streaming era.

Ryan Reynolds' Cryptic Post Read As Deadpool's Return In ‘Avengers: Doomsday'

Ryan Reynolds ( Free Guy, Red Notice ) may have hinted that Deadpool will be crashing the Avengers' next big-screen outing. On the morning of 12 August, the Deadpool star posted an image on Instagram of the Avengers logo, but with Deadpool-style graffiti spray-painted across it. The red paint, matching Deadpool's signature colour, appears to mimic both the 'A' for Avengers and the iconic 'A' anarchy symbol. Reynolds' wisecracking antihero was last seen in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine , which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, but was not among the many stars confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday during Marvel's much-discussed big 'chair' cast reveal. Robert Downey Jr. during Marvel'schair reveal. Still, given Deadpool & Wolverine's massive success, and the Merc with a Mouth's knack for multiverse chaos, fans have long speculated that Deadpool might resurface soon — either in Avengers: Doomsday or in the follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars . The timing of Reynolds' post has many convinced it's the former. For now, Marvel is understood to be filming Doomsday , with the Instagram tease aligning perfectly with production. Some fans are even expecting a second round of cast announcements, or perhaps another 'chair' reveal, as shooting continues. Filming for Avengers: Doomsday has been underway for months, with leaked on-set images showing Sam Wilson's (Anthony Mackie, Twisted Metal ) Avengers, The Thunderbolts/New Avengers, and The Fantastic Four appearing together. Legacy X-Men actors have also been spotted filming, though several MCU characters remain unconfirmed. Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellen's Magneto That leaves the door wide open for more additions, and Deadpool, alongside Hugh Jackman's ( The Greatest Showman ) Wolverine, ranks high on fan wish lists. With Doomsday confirmed to feature a trip back to the original Fox X-Men universe, where Patrick Stewart's ( Star Trek: Picard ) Professor X, James Marsden's ( Sonic the Hedgehog films) Cyclops, and Ian McKellen's ( The Lord of the Rings trilogy) Magneto are returning, the stage seems set for a reunion of old favourites. Could Reynolds' Instagram post be more than just a playful nod? Fans are hoping so — and if history has taught us anything about Deadpool, it's that he loves to crash the party. LEGO 75419 Death Star Diorama Set Leaked, Due Oct With 9,023 Pieces

Finally, after all the rumours around a new, larger, and of course more costly LEGO Death Star expected to land some time in 2025, we now have a first peek at a leaked image of the upcoming 9,023-piece LEGO 95419 Death Star diorama set that is expected to release in October 2025 for US$999.99. As can be seen below, instead of the usual sphere design that most fans have been getting over the years, we seem to be getting a cross-section slice of the Death Star instead, in a diorama style, with quite a number of mini figures included. LEGO has managed to squeeze in pretty much every iconic scene from the Death Star, even that corridor where Han Solo was running away from a bunch of chasing Stormtroopers, C-3PO in the control room, Luke and Leia making the jump, Obiwan Kenobi powering off the shield generators, Emperor Palpatine's throne room, Darth Vader's meditation chamber and so much more. There's bound to be plenty of Easter Eggs to be had too. As can be seen above, over the last 20 years, we started with a LEGO Death Star II, which had 3,449 pieces in 2005. With the previous Death Star set released in 2016, we now have a new set that more than doubles the piece count to a whopping 9,023 pieces. This set will then take the crown of the largest LEGO Star Wars set ever, with the current reigning champion being the LEGO Star Wars 75192 Millennium Falcon, clocking in at 7,541 pieces. According to the leaks, the set is expected to be 27.5 inches tall (70cm), 31 inches wide (79cm) and 10.5 inches deep (27cm). Many Star Wars fans are bound to be disappointed with this reveal, having given only a slice of a Death Star rather than a whole. But look on the bright side, We think this is great. Because of the way it's designed, it means we won't have to worry about finding shelf space for it. It would be PERFECT for mounting on a wall instead, and it would look even more impressive once we light it all up! We're definitely excited for its release, which is expected to be this October, but the only worrying factor is its expected US$999.99 price.
