MUMBAI: The Mumbai zonal unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a male crew member of Air India for allegedly smuggling 1.373 kg of foreign-origin gold, valued at approximately ₹1.41 crore, into the country.

According to DRI sources, the crew member was intercepted on Friday at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) shortly after arriving from New York on flight AI-116.
The operation was based on specific intelligence suggesting that a syndicate was using airline crew members to smuggle gold from the United States into India. While an initial search of the crew member yielded no results, sustained questioning revealed that he had allegedly hidden a pouch containing gold bars—wrapped in black duct tape—near the baggage services area during a mandatory post-flight breathalyser test.

The DRI team later recovered the pouch, which held 1.373 kg of smuggled gold. In a voluntary statement, the accused reportedly admitted to having smuggled gold into India on earlier occasions as well. Based on his disclosure, DRI officials launched a follow-up operation and arrested the alleged mastermind of the smuggling network.
The individual is accused of orchestrating the use of airline crew members to ferry illicit gold into the country and is also said to have confessed to his involvement.

Both men have been arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. In a separate operation conducted in September 2023, the DRI had arrested six individuals—including a private airline security employee—in connection with another gold smuggling racket involving foreign-origin gold brought in through the airport.
'DRI has been consistently exposing involvement of airline personnel and ground staff in gold smuggling,' a DRI official said. Despite repeated attempts, Air India officials could not be reached for comments. When HT contacted Air India about DRI's investigation in the case, it did not get a comment.

Top Chinese diplomat detained after overseas trip: Was in line for foreign minister role

Liu Jianchao (CFR) A senior Chinese diplomat, Liu Jianchao, who has been widely seen as a potential future foreign minister, has been detained by authorities for questioning, WSJ reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. Liu, 61, currently heads the international department of the ruling Communist Party, which manages ties with foreign political parties. He was reportedly "taken away" in late July after returning to Beijing from an overseas work trip, news agency AFP said, citing the report. The reasons for his detention remains unclear. The veteran diplomat has previously served as ambassador to the Philippines and Indonesia, and as spokesperson for the foreign ministry. He also held senior roles in anti-corruption bodies under President Xi Jinping's flagship campaign against graft. His detention marks the highest-level inquiry into a Chinese diplomat since former foreign minister Qin Gang was abruptly removed in 2023 amid reports of an extramarital affair. Liu was last seen in public on July 29 in Algeria, following diplomatic engagements in several African nations and Singapore, according to his department's official website. Earlier in July, Liu had criticised the United States' defence chief, accusing him of 'inciting confrontation and conflict' by calling on American allies to strengthen their militaries to counter China. There has been no official response from Beijing to the report.

Senior Chinese diplomat Liu Jianchao taken in for questioning: Report

Liu Jianchao, a senior Chinese diplomat widely seen as a potential future foreign minister, has been taken away by authorities for questioning, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. His detention marks the highest-level probe involving a diplomat since China ousted its former foreign minister and President Xi Jinping's protégé, Qin Gang.(AFP File Photo) Liu was taken away after returning to Beijing in late July from an overseas work trip, WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter. China's State Council Information Office, which handles media queries for the Chinese government, and the Chinese Communist Party International Liaison Department did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Liu, 61, has led the Communist Party's body in charge of managing ties with foreign political parties. Since taking the role in 2022, he has travelled to more than 20 nations and met officials from more than 160 countries. Liu's busy schedule, especially his meetings with the former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, stoked expectations that the former ambassador and ministry spokesman was being groomed to be the next foreign minister. His detention marks the highest-level probe involving a diplomat since China ousted its former foreign minister and President Xi Jinping's protégé, Qin Gang, in 2023 following rumours of an extramarital affair. Born in the northeastern province of Jilin, Liu majored in English at Beijing Foreign Studies University and studied international relations at Oxford before taking up his first post as a translator with the foreign ministry. He has served in China's mission to Britain and later as ambassador to Indonesia and the Philippines. During his time as ministry spokesman, he was known for humorous off-the-cuff comments while making a no-nonsense defence of China's interests.
