Air India crew member held for smuggling gold worth ₹1.41 crore
MUMBAI: The Mumbai zonal unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a male crew member of Air India for allegedly smuggling 1.373 kg of foreign-origin gold, valued at approximately ₹1.41 crore, into the country.

According to DRI sources, the crew member was intercepted on Friday at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) shortly after arriving from New York on flight AI-116.
The operation was based on specific intelligence suggesting that a syndicate was using airline crew members to smuggle gold from the United States into India. While an initial search of the crew member yielded no results, sustained questioning revealed that he had allegedly hidden a pouch containing gold bars—wrapped in black duct tape—near the baggage services area during a mandatory post-flight breathalyser test.

The DRI team later recovered the pouch, which held 1.373 kg of smuggled gold. In a voluntary statement, the accused reportedly admitted to having smuggled gold into India on earlier occasions as well. Based on his disclosure, DRI officials launched a follow-up operation and arrested the alleged mastermind of the smuggling network.
The individual is accused of orchestrating the use of airline crew members to ferry illicit gold into the country and is also said to have confessed to his involvement.

Both men have been arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. In a separate operation conducted in September 2023, the DRI had arrested six individuals—including a private airline security employee—in connection with another gold smuggling racket involving foreign-origin gold brought in through the airport.
'DRI has been consistently exposing involvement of airline personnel and ground staff in gold smuggling,' a DRI official said. Despite repeated attempts, Air India officials could not be reached for comments. When HT contacted Air India about DRI's investigation in the case, it did not get a comment.

Illegal immigrant from Gujarat jailed in US for $1.79 million elderly fraud scam
Representative AI image AHMEDABAD: A Gujarati illegal immigrant from New Jersey, Pranav Patel , 33, was sentenced to six years and three months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit money laundering. The sentence was pronounced by US District Judge William F. Jung. Patel pleaded guilty to the charge on December 23, 2024. The court also ordered the forfeiture of $1,791,301, which was identified as the proceeds of the offence. According to court records, Patel was part of a fraud scheme targeting elderly citizens in the United States between October and December 2023. Conspirators, operating from call centres outside the country, posed as officials from govt agencies, including the US Department of the Treasury. They falsely claimed that the victims had pending warrants or legal issues and pressured them to hand over cash and valuables. Patel acted as a money mule for the operation. He travelled from New Jersey to various locations across the east coast, including Florida, to collect money and gold from the victims. One victim told the court during sentencing that the scam forced him to sell his home and rely solely on Social Security for daily expenses. In December 2023, Patel travelled to a residence in Hillsborough County to collect what he believed was a box of gold. The operation was monitored by law enforcement. Patel was arrested shortly after picking up the box, which was part of a controlled law enforcement operation. In total, Patel was involved in laundering over $1.79 million. The scheme caused significant financial harm to the victims. The investigation was carried out by the US Secret Service along with the Pasco and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Offices. The case was prosecuted by Assistant US Attorneys Jennifer L. Peresie and Maria Guzman. "Family is completely devastated": AI 171 plane crash victim's relative
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 15 (ANI): Shattered relatives of those deceased in the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad await the slow process of matching DNA samples that will help them verify the identities of the charred bodies of their loved ones retrieved from the crash site. Neha Gajjar, a relative of crash victim Jayaben Gajjar said that her entire family was 'devastated' after the incident. Neha has been waiting outside the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to collect the remains of her aunt Jayaben Gajjar following the DNA match. Neha said that her family never thought that she would go in such a manner and never return. She stated that there is a lot of support from the government, and as soon as the DNA match happened, the family received a call from the authorities to hand over Jayaben's body. 'Our family is completely devastated. We had never imagined that she would go away in this manner and never return... There was a lot of support from the government... As soon as the DNA match happened, we got a call from them saying that they would hand over my aunt's body', Neha Gajjar told ANI. Earlier today, Ahmedabad Additional Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Dr. Rajnish Patel said that the identification process of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's body is still in process. Rupani was among the 241 victims of the AI 171 plane crash, which took place on Thursday. 'The identification process of the body of former CM Vijay Rupani is still underway. We have still not been able to match the DNA. We will inform the press as soon as we find his body', Rajnish Patel told reporters. Patel further informed that a total of 31 DNAs have been identified as of now and 12 bodies have been handed over to their respective family members.
