Study explores link between maternal asthma and ASD development in children

Yahoo7 days ago
According to the World Health Organization, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects approximately 10% of children globally. ASD is theorised to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including maternal asthma. Maternal asthma, defined as asthma existing in mothers prior to childbirth, is thought to cause ASD by altering the mothers' immune response, which then changes the levels of hormones required for foetal brain development. Previous studies have shown an association between asthma in mothers and ASD development in their children, however these results had yet to be validated by a meta-analysis. In research published in July 2025 in Nature, Jingfang Zheng and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis study that measured the association between having an asthmatic mother and ASD development. The study found that children of asthmatic mothers had a 36% increased odds of developing ASD compared to children of asthma-free mothers.
To observe the effects of maternal asthma and odds of children developing ASD, this study conducted a meta-analysis using electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library), covering studies published from the inception of the databases to October 2024. Studies were included in the meta-analysis if mothers in the exposed group were asthmatic, mothers in the control group were asthma-free, the outcome was a prevalence of ASD in the mothers' children, and if the study design was either a case-control or a cohort study. From the selection process, eight studies were selected (five in the US, one in Sweden, one multicentre, and one in Taiwan and mainland China). Additionally, subgroup analysis by the child's sex was carried out using a meta-analysis of two studies (both US-based). The joint sample size of the eight studies was 152,697 participants with maternal asthma and 1,809,488 without maternal asthma. Children of asthmatic mothers had a 36% increased odds of developing ASD compared to children of asthma-free mothers. The effects of maternal asthma on ASD development differed based on the child's sex, with only male children of asthmatic mothers being observed to have a statistically significant increased odds of ASD development, with a 28% increased odds of developing ASD, compared to those with asthma-free mothers.
This study by Zheng and colleagues provides evidence of maternal asthma being a risk factor for ASD in children, and that this risk is especially pronounced for male children. However, the certainty of these trends was classified as low, due to the study design and variation in results across the studies. Therefore, more studies assessing the relationship between maternal asthma and ASD risk are required to validate these findings. GlobalData epidemiologists forecast that in the 16 major markets: (the US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, Japan, China, Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and South Korea), diagnosed prevalent cases of ASD in men of all ages will decrease from 5.9 million cases in 2025 to 5.7 million cases in 2031, and cases in women of all ages will decrease from two million cases in 2025 to 1.9 million cases in 2031.

Scientists watch a solar system being born for the first ever time

Scientists have watched a solar system being born for the first ever time. Using a powerful telescope, researchers saw the first pieces of material that will go onto form planets. A solar system has never been seen this early in its formation before. Researchers hope that the breakthrough discovery will allow for a new understanding of how such systems form – including our own. The findings are like 'a picture of the baby Solar System', said Merel van 't Hoff, a professor at Purdue University, USA, and a co-author on the new study. 'We're seeing a system that looks like what our Solar System looked like when it was just beginning to form.' The new system is being born around HOPS-315, a baby star located around 1300 light-years away. Researchers believe that it looks like our Sun would have done in its youth. Those baby stars often have 'protoplanetary discs' around them, made up of dust and gas that will eventually clump together and form the beginnings of planets. Researchers have seen massive newborn planets in those discs before, but they have now spotted those baby planets as they begin to form. The work is described in a new paper, 'Refractory solid condensation detected in an embedded protoplanetary disk', published in the journal Nature. More follows

York Region Confirms First Positive West Nile Mosquito Test of 2025

● York Region reported its first positive test for West Nile Virus in 2025, detected in a Vaughan mosquito trap. ● In 2024, 18 mosquito traps tested positive for the virus, up from 13 in 2023, though none were found in Whitchurch-Stouffville. ● The Region monitors up to 40 traps weekly from June through October as part of its seasonal surveillance program. ● Residents are encouraged to eliminate standing water on their properties and can request free larvicide treatments for private catch basins. ● While most West Nile infections cause no symptoms, severe complications can occur in rare cases. In an announcement today, York Region confirmed its first West Nile Virus detection of the season. It was found in a sample taken from a mosquito trap near Weston Road and Rutherford Road in Vaughan. The Region's mosquito surveillance program runs annually from June through October. Public Health staff monitor up to 40 traps each week throughout the region, testing captured mosquitoes for the virus. Eighteen traps tested positive for West Nile in 2024, which was an increase from 13 positive tests in 2023. However, no infected mosquitoes were found in Whitchurch-Stouffville in either year. 'Mosquitoes are responsible for passing West Nile virus from birds to humans,' the Region explains on its website . 'Not all mosquitoes carry West Nile virus. Only a few of the 57 mosquito species found in Ontario are able to carry and spread the virus.' Three York Region residents were confirmed to have contracted West Nile Virus in 2024, which Public Health officials work to prevent through proactive control measures. These include treating stagnant water on public land with larvicides such as bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) or Methoprene. The Region also operates a summer-long mosquito control program focused on eliminating standing water. Residents are urged to reduce such mosquito-friendly environments on their personal properties. This includes removing or refreshing water in containers like flower pots, birdbaths, and gutters, and checking for puddles on tarps and pool covers. Rain barrels should be fitted with mesh screens, and ponds should include functioning circulation systems. Bti larvicides can also be used in rain barrels and ponds to prevent mosquito larvae from developing into mature adults. According to the World Health Organization, most individuals infected with West Nile Virus do not develop symptoms. However, approximately 20 percent may experience mild illness such as fever, headaches, fatigue, or confusion. In rare instances, the virus can lead to serious neurological complications, including tremors, paralysis, or coma. The Region offers free larvicide treatment for catch basins on private properties. Homeowners can request the service by calling Health Connection at 1-800-361-5653 or by emailing the Health Inspector's office. Standing water concerns on both public and private land can also be reported through Health Connection. All nine municipalities within York Region have standing water bylaws in place to help curb mosquito breeding, and blue door hangers are issued to homes that have received a standing water complaint. Residents are asked to clear any standing water within seven days, though it can take as few as four days for mosquito breeding to begin. Eliminating stagnant water helps prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs and multiplying. While the overall risk of contracting West Nile Virus remains low, Public Health also advises residents to take personal precautions. These include wearing long sleeves, pants, and socks during peak mosquito hours, using insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin, and considering permethrin-treated clothing for additional protection.
