Sheffield Wednesday set up second-round tie with Leeds after win on penalties
Victory was well deserved for Henrik Pedersen's young guns despite Wanderers going down to 10 men after defender Sam Inwood's 30th-minute red card.
Pedersen named five teenagers in his starting line-up and Gui Siqueira smashed them into a 20th-minute lead.
Wanderers equalised for the first time through Jordi Osei-Tutu after 36 minutes.
However, Owls' skipper Ike Ugbo restored the visitors' advantage with a cool right-footed finish a minute later.
Substitute Thierry Gale's first Bolton goal after 77 minutes looked to have earned penalties, only for Reece Johnson to make it 3-2 after 80 minutes.
Wednesday were heading through until substitute Amario Cozier-Duberry's dramatic stunning stoppage-time leveller.
However, Charles was the hero with his double saves to delight Wednesday's travelling fans.

'If everything goes well, maybe we could do even better than we did last year, so it's a massive game for us. 'We know a little bit about St Johnstone, we played them last year, we have a player in Liam Gordon who has been there. 'We've studied and followed them closely. It's a team that is very confident at the moment, they're doing really well, they have a similar approach to the way the play the game as we do, and they've had some great results over the summer. 'It's a team that if we're not at our best they will hurt us, that's for sure, so we approach the game with the utmost respect for them. 'They're a great team, they're at home, and we know we will have to produce our very best quality to be able to progress and win the game. 'I expect it to be a difficult game, just as difficult as the ones we've had in the last couple of weeks, but I also sense that we are having a great support with us, with about 1000 tickets sold already, so that shows we have the backing we would wish for, right now. It was a volume matter, so we had to bring him on later in the game. 'He's fine now, he's good and ready. 'Johnny Koutroumbis and Liam Gordon had some minor issues, they're not ready for Saturday, but we will assess it early next week and see how far it is. 'Jordan McGhee is back in full training next week, which is really positive, so we look forward to getting him back on the pitch with us. 'Eseosa has had surgery, a bigger injury, a muscle injury, and now he will be out for seven months, unfortunately. 'The surgery has gone well and we hope for a speedy recovery.'

The 22-year-old defender headed home Celtic's third goal of the second-round clash at Parkhead. Murray, who has already overcome two separate cruciate ligament injuries in his career, earlier signed a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2028. Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston were also on target and Falkirk defender Liam Henderson put through his own net before Keelan Adams scored an impressive consolation goal for the Premiership newcomers. Centre-back Murray was one of six players coming into the Celtic line-up alongside goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels and Johnny Kenny. The Hoops beat then Championship side Falkirk 5-2 on their way to winning last season's tournament and this was another open encounter with both sides creating chances in the first half. Kenny volleyed wide early on after James Forrest's lay-off and former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain saved long-range strikes from Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney before scrambling to meet Henderson's wayward passback, which just went wide. Ross MacIver dragged a shot wide at the other end after a loose pass from Murray. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after McGregor returned the ball into the box following a corner.
