Dane Murray celebrates contract with goal as Celtic ease past Falkirk
Murray, who has already overcome two separate cruciate ligament injuries in his career, earlier signed a new deal that keeps him at the club until 2028.
Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston were also on target and Falkirk defender Liam Henderson put through his own net before Keelan Adams scored an impressive consolation goal for the Premiership newcomers.
Centre-back Murray was one of six players coming into the Celtic line-up alongside goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo, Auston Trusty, Arne Engels and Johnny Kenny.
The Hoops beat then Championship side Falkirk 5-2 on their way to winning last season's tournament and this was another open encounter with both sides creating chances in the first half.
Kenny volleyed wide early on after James Forrest's lay-off and former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain saved long-range strikes from Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney before scrambling to meet Henderson's wayward passback, which just went wide.
Ross MacIver dragged a shot wide at the other end after a loose pass from Murray.
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after McGregor returned the ball into the box following a corner. Tierney ran on to meet the cross and nodded the ball down for Maeda to score with a diving header.
There were further chances at each end before the break. Sinisalo saved brilliantly from Calvin Miller's 25-yard strike before denying Alfredo Agyeman and MacIver. Engels and Forrest missed close-range headers at the other end.
Celtic were more dominant after the break and doubled their lead in the 54th minute after Falkirk lost possession from a throw-in. Johnston chased down Miller as the former Celtic player headed back towards his own goal and the right-back won the ball before curling into the far corner with his left foot.
Murray got his big moment in the 61st minute when he headed home from an inswinging corner from Engels.
Celtic went further ahead three minutes later as Yang Hyun-jun made an instant impact after coming on with home debutant Shin Yamada. The South Korean winger ran past two opponents after Celtic won the ball back deep in the Bairns half, and his low ball across the goalmouth was turned into his own net by Henderson.
The noisy visiting fans got a chance to celebrate three minutes later when right-back Adams arrowed a shot into the top corner from 20 yards.
That ended the flurry of goals as Celtic safely navigated their way into Saturday evening's quarter-final draw and avoided any injuries ahead of their Champions League play-off first leg against Kairat Almaty on Wednesday.

Jamie Carragher outlines Liverpool's biggest concern in Premier League title race
Jamie Carragher has given his predictions for the Premier League title race this season and he has some concerns over Arne Slot's Liverpool squad after a busy transfer window Liverpool have strengthened their squad this summer, but are still two players short and will face a tougher challenge in the Premier League this season. That's the opinion of Jamie Carragher, who has issued a warning to the defending champions. Arne Slot 's side kicked off their title defence with a thrilling but unconvincing 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night. While there was a promising performance from new striker Hugo Ekitike, the defence was vulnerable and it took two late goals to secure the points. The Reds have spent over £300million on players in the summer transfer window with a huge turnover being overseen by Slot. They have added Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni, among others, yet Carragher has spotted a few worrying signs. Asked on Sky Sports which side is best placed to challenge Liverpool for the title, Carragher replied: 'I'd probably say Arsenal as a whole, as a club, as a team, but I've just got Pep Guardiola in the back of my mind. 'He just doesn't not win. When he doesn't win a league title, I don't think he's gone two years without winning a league title. He's such a special manager, you think is he going to conjure something up? 'I'm also thinking 'is this City squad good enough to go and win the league right now?' The squad he had last season he couldn't find something to fix it and we always expect him to do that, so I'd probably just edge for Arsenal.' He added: 'There's no doubt that the [Liverpool] squad is much stronger than it was last season. We could see that in the teams that the manager picked – he didn't have full confidence in certain players. He's rectified that in terms of the players that he's brought in. 'But I envisage a much tighter title [race] this season, because I think Liverpool will be better, and I think they will maybe get more points than they got because they dropped off towards the end, but I think Manchester City and Arsenal will be a lot stronger too. 'Those two have been the two who have battled it out for the Premier League title in the past few seasons. Last season they dropped off and Liverpool took full advantage of that, but I expect them to be a lot stronger.' Asked about the large turnover of players, Carragher said: 'That is the worry and Liverpool haven't looked themselves in pre-season. It might sound strange, but Liverpool still need more players because of those who have gone out. 'You think of the amount of forwards they had last season, they've lost three and brought one in. So they need at least one more forward and one defender and that is a formidable squad that will look to attack the Premier League and Champions League.' Liverpool are in negotiations to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi and could return to test Newcastle 's resolve over Alexander Isak. The Reds saw a bid of £110m plus £10m in add-ons rejected earlier this month, but Isak is refusing to play for the Magpies in the hope of forcing through a transfer.

Ronan Devlin sets sights on ending Erin's Own's wait for Ulster glory
The Cargin side's most recent significant achievement has been a hat-trick of Antrim titles but even this fails to satisfy the appetite of their players and fans. There has been a series of so near yet so far episodes in the Ulster Club Championship but the provincial silverware has proven to be elusive to date. Yet manager Devlin remains hopeful that the team may yet break new ground on the provincial front. The experience acquired by members of his side both at club and county levels is standing the team in good stead as they keep their sights fixed on even bigger targets. 'While it's great to win Antrim titles, we would like to have a real crack at the Ulster title," he said. 'Obviously when you move up in the provincial sphere, life can become more demanding and you have to be up for the challenge. 'We are taking nothing for granted in Antrim. Every time the county Championship comes round, it's there to be won and, while we never tire of winning, we would like to move up in the world a little but we know that this is not easy given the quality of teams you are likely to encounter.' Given their sustained period of success in Antrim, it's not surprising to discover that a solid core of experience underpins the Erin's Own side. Conhuir Johnston, Justin Crozier and Mick McCann are among the long-serving warriors who have played their hearts out for the club, while James Laverty and Eunan Quinn are others who have made an invaluable input to the team's progress over the years. John McNabb is a very competent goalkeeper, while Tomas McCann and Pat Shivers are clinical finishers who are capable of racking up impressive scoring returns and, with several players anxious to break through into the team, competition for starting places is said to be razor-sharp. There is no doubt that the Erin's Own stalwarts will be bidding to impress the new Antrim management that will be put in place and this will provide a further incentive for the players to lift their game. For the moment, though, Cargin's eyes are on St John's when they go head to head at Corrigan Park on Sunday (2.00pm).
