Man remanded in custody after sweets were 'laced with sedatives in summer camp poisoning'
A 76-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with child cruelty offences after children became unwell at a summer camp in Leicestershire.
Jon Ruben, of Wayte Court in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning charged with three counts of wilfully assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, abandoning or exposing children in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health, relating to three boys at the summer camp between July 25 and July 29.
The court was told the charges relate to sweets which were allegedly laced with sedatives.
Leicestershire Police received a report on Sunday that children at Stathern Lodge in Canal Lane, Stathern, had become ill.
Eight children, all boys aged between eight and 11, and one adult were taken to hospital as a precaution but were discharged, police said.
The defendant, who stood in the dock wearing a grey sweatshirt, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the four-minute hearing.

Ruben was told by chair of the magistrates Elizabeth Needham that he will appear at Leicester Crown Court on August 29.
He gave no indication of his pleas during the hearing on Saturday.
Ruben was arrested on Monday evening at a nearby pub on suspicion of administering poison or a noxious thing with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.
Police said the 'owners and operators of Stathern Lodge are independent from those people who use or hire the lodge and are not connected to the incident'.
The lodge is a converted farmhouse with a sports hall and catering facilities.
The investigation is being led by the East Midlands special operations unit's major incident team.
Leicestershire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after officers said the incident happened on Monday, before amending the date to Sunday.
It is still unclear when officers responded and whether that is why the watchdog referral has been made.
Neighbours described seeing distressed parents outside the village hall in nearby Plungar, which was used as a triage centre for the children on Monday.

The Scottish Government's annual crime survey showed 31 per cent of violent crimes are carried by under-16s. No one deserves to be assaulted at their place of work. But for teachers, it's becoming a daily concern in some schools. For many years, well-meaning government ministers and local council education chiefs were tied to the mantra of 'inclusiveness'. This misguided policy made it almost impossible to exclude the worst-behaved children. On paper this might have sounded like a good idea. But in the real world it gave a free pass for bad behaviour. It is teachers and well-behaved pupils who are left to deal with the inevitable breakdown in school discipline. If some pupils are repeatedly violent, they must be removed from the classroom for the benefit of others. Classrooms can't be run for the benefit of the worst behaved. Many people like a flutter but gambling firm profits are also based on misery. Oil and gas firms pay a super tax in recognition of the damage done by their industry. Taxing gambling firms more to scrap the two child tax is a cause everyone should back.

Brit, 54, has legs amputated in Thailand after 'hit and run' leaves him needing 24/7 care

Willie Braid is still recovering in a Bangkok hospital A British expat lost both of his legs in an alleged hit and run in Thailand. Willie Braid, 54, was involved in a crash with a lorry while he was riding a motorbike in the capita l of Bangkok on July 27. The Scottish man was then rushed to hospital with life-changing injuries and the driver of the lorry is alleged to have fled the scene. Following the crash and the injuries Willie sustained, he suffered kidney failure and was placed in an induced coma. Both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee and he still requires round the clock care in hospital. It comes after a schoolboy, 13, has both legs amputated after 'getting cramp' at sports camp. She explained he 'recognises us, but he's very confused'. She told the Daily Record: "He's come out of the coma but he doesn't know where he is or what's happened. He recognises us, but he's very confused. We've got a psychiatrist working with him but he has no comprehension of his injuries or his amputations, he's delirious. "That could be caused by trauma or an infection. Thankfully, he is receiving exceptional care from the medics here, who are doing everything they can to get him better." Willie, who has lived in Thailand for five years, is also receiving kidney dialysis following the crash. It is expected that he could remain in hospital for at least three months. June continued: "I'm not sure how long I'll stay out here for. Right now, I'm taking everything day by day. Willie will have to stay in the trauma unit for the foreseeable future before he can be moved into rehabilitation. As it stands, he cannot fly, but thankfully he's in the best hands possible." Willie will require lifetime support once he is discharged from hospital and will need to move into supported accommodation. June has now launched a fundraiser to help pay for his rehabilitation and medical bills. She continued: "Willie's road to recovery will be long and challenging. He will require 24/7 care in Bangkok, as he is unable to travel until his wounds heal. "Once he is stable, he will undergo rehabilitation and be fitted for prosthetic legs, which will help him regain his independence. With that said, we're seeking support during this difficult time." Nearly £5,000 has been raised since the fundraiser was launched earlier this month. Meanwhile, June and her family are receiving support from the British Embassy in Thailand to trace those responsible for the alleged hit and run and bring them to justice. He added: "Right now, we're receiving support from the embassy to find a lawyer who will take our case up with the police. Until then, we will be fundraising to get Willie better."
