Free PSC coaching programme launched in Coimbatore
It was inaugurated on Wednesday by the Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar in the presence of Coimbatore MP Dr Ganapathi P Rajkumar, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran and CCMC Mayor Ranganayaki.
The CCMC launched the programme in collaboration with the district administration.
Speaking at the event, the district collector highlighted the efforts of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in promoting youth development through schemes such as Puthumai Penn, Thamizh Pudhalvan, and Naan Mudhalvan. He said the newly launched free coaching programme reflects the same commitment to empowering youth and job aspirants.
The programme will provide structured coaching for TNPSC Group 2 and Group 4 exams, guided by expert faculty. It will include access to updated study materials, well-designed classes, and mentorship sessions. Classes will be held full day at the community hall.

Govt. NEET coaching classes to cover all 13 blocks in Madurai
Following the success of government-offered free NEET coaching classes which have yielded good results, the NEET classes are to be expanded to all the blocks in the district. Madurai district with 13 blocks, from the current academic year, will have a weekly NEET coaching class with all necessary facilities like study materials, daily exercises, personal guidance, among others in all the blocks, said S. Vennila Devi, district coordinator for government-sponsored NEET training. She added, 'Unlike previous years when the teachers would be appointed as volunteers, hereafter, the government school teachers who are willing to take weekly Saturday classes will be given a remuneration.' This would not only encourage more teachers to take up the task but would also help them in self-development, she added. As the programme falls under Naan Mudhalvan scheme, all the necessary study materials, daily and weekly test exercises would be taken care by the School Education Department, Ms. Vennila noted. While the classes were earlier provided in only three centres – Tirumangalam, Othakadai and Melur – in the district, by further decentralising it, more students from remote areas are believed to step up for taking up the classes, she observed. She said that in addition to NEET and JEE coaching, training for eight other competitive exams is to be provided to the students. As Madurai district has already witnessed an improvement in the number of students clearing NEET this year, by further expanding the training, chances of more students taking up the examination and more students clearing it in the upcoming years are high, she noted. In the recent NEET UG counselling, about seven government school students have secured admission in medical colleges under the 7.5% reservation, she pointed. C. Snega, who has secured admission in Madurai Medical College in her third attempt by scoring 487 marks, said that though she took training in private coaching classes, for two years before clearing it, the motivation came from the training offered through the district administration. 'I scored 192 in first attempt, 445 in second attempt and 487 in the final attempt. I did not even think that I would score close to 200 in first attempt, thanks to the one-year coaching provided by the schoolteachers,' she added. As she aims to specialise in cardiology, she said the strong foundation she developed through her training would help her come out with flying colours.

Coimbatore Municipal Corporation to set up rest areas for 108 ambulance drivers
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has decided to set up a rest area with bath and toilet facilities for 108 ambulance drivers and its emergency medical technicians. A special resolution in this regard was passed at the CCM's ordinary council meeting held at Victoria Hall on Thursday. Mayor K Ranganayaki, who moved the resolution, announced Rs 1 crore has been allocated to set up rest areas in all the five municipal zones. "The 108 ambulance drivers and their emergency medical technicians work round the clock even during the rainy seasons and scorching heat. Their efforts were enormous during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, they are suffering due to the lack of comfortable rest areas as well as basic amenities. The proposed rest area with bath and toilet facilities would greatly help them," said Mayor Ranganayaki, who allotted the amount under her emergency grievance redressal camp's special fund. Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran said the proposal is in its initial stage and they have to find out the place suitable for the ambulance drivers and its staff along with working out the cost. Likewise, the commissioner has also announced that two rest areas for gig workers similar to that set up by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will also be set up in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore residents demand revival of unused Sikkarayapuram library lying idle for four years
COIMBATORE: Even after four years, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has not opened the public library at Sikkarayapuram near Onappalayam. Residents have urged the CCMC to revive the library, which currently has no books. A resident, P Muthukrishnan, told TNIE that the corporation constructed the library building at a cost of around Rs 10 lakh, but it remains closed to the public. "Hundreds of families live in areas surrounding the library, such as Pon Nagar, Onampalayam, and Poochiyur. There are some schools and a college located in the vicinity. There is no other library in the surrounding areas either," he said. C Manivasakam, another resident, said that since the building was completed in 2021, no librarian has been appointed and no books have been supplied to the library, especially after Covid-19. Due to a lack of use, bushes have grown on the campus, and the place is now being used for anti-social activities, he alleged. Ward 18 Councillor Sharmila C said, "Only if there are sufficient members can the library be operational. The library has already been handed over to the district library department." District Library Officer P Rajendran and CCMC West Zone Assistant Commissioner S Durai Murugan told TNIE that they would check on the situation. Udumalpet Library Circle president K Leninbarathi told TNIE, "Despite having good infrastructure, the corporation should have operated this library successfully instead of keeping it inactive. If the corporation had appointed a librarian, they would have increased membership." He urged that instead of blaming each other, officials from the corporation and district administration should work together to ensure the functioning of the library, considering the residents' welfare.
