Tuaran event draws 100 sailors from 16 nations

Tuaran: The presence of more than 100 sailors and 29 yachts from 16 countries for the Dalit Bay Nautica event is proof that Sabah is now being recognised and appreciated globally as a sailing destination, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He expressed hope that nautical tourism such as this will soon become one of the main tourist attractions or activities in the State. 'Sabah offers a variety of sailing experiences and, in fact, there is strong potential to become a sailing destination given our beautiful and pristine beaches. 'I believe nautical tourism or recreational sailing activities have the potential to attract more visitors to Sabah, and in turn, generate economic spillovers for the local communities. 'Therefore, we need to seize the prospects of sailing activities given the State's strategic location with its natural advantages and many waterways. 'Just like Dalit Beach, with its stunning coastline, rich cultural diversity and strategic location facing the South China Sea, this area holds great potential to become a world-class tourism destination,' he said when officiating the Dalit Bay Nautica 2025 event, Friday. His speech was delivered by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. The Chief Minister said the event will also help to boost tourism, promote cultural heritage and stimulate economic activity in the State. 'This will definitely put Sabah on the global coastal map and is a good indicator of growth in the State's tourism sector. 'Without a doubt, this event will further diversify our tourism offerings and help us achieve our target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals to Sabah this year. 'As the second largest state in Malaysia, Sabah has everything to offer, from deep seas to towering mountains. This makes Sabah one of the world-class tourism destinations. Govt working to bring stranded umrah pilgrims in Jeddah back home
IPOH: Efforts are being taken to ensure the 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who were reportedly stranded in Jeddah since last week return to the country safely, says Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) said the government, through the Malaysian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, are making arrangements for the pilgrims. "I am deeply concerned and sympathise with the plight of 42 Malaysian umrah pilgrims who were reportedly stranded in Jeddah since July 25 due to the issue of unavailability of return flight tickets. "The embassy is paying full attention and arranging immediate measures to ensure the welfare and safety of all pilgrims, including efforts to bring them back home safely," he said in a statement on Monday (July 28). Dr Mohd Na'im said the government views such cases seriously and would not compromise on any party that tries to deceive or defraud umrah pilgrims, especially those involving senior citizens and civil servants. "Strict action, including through legal channels, will be taken against those who are complicit or guilty. "Since the beginning of this year, I have repeatedly reminded the public to check the status of companies and Umrah packages offered through official Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry channels, including a special portal and application for checking licensed travel agents," he said. "I call on Muslims in this country to always be vigilant and only choose legitimate, licensed, and registered Umrah operators with the authorities. I hope that such incidents will not occur again in the future," he added.

Anwar partly to blame for public anger: LDP

Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said while it does not support 'topple Anwar' movement, the Unity government must shoulder blame for failure to meet public expectations, leading to growing dissatisfaction. 'Anwar (Prime Minister) must demonstrate a firm commitment to practical reforms, rather than resorting to excessive 'performative politics' to please the public,' Vice President David Ong said in a statement. David said over the past year, Anwar's government has faced widespread criticism for controversies such as the delayed appointment of the Chief Justice. Such missteps he said have eroded public trust. 'The core responsibility of a leader is to resolve livelihood issues, not to create unnecessary political spectacles.' Regarding calls for Anwar to step down, David said it must be pursued through legitimate democratic mechanisms. 'Former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir remarked that a prime minister stepping down after losing public trust is a normal occurrence. 'However, we in LDP emphasise that Malaysia's 16th General Election is due by Feb 2028, it is better to let the people make their final judgment at the ballot box. 'We (LDP) criticise the Unity government's weak handling of economic and cost-of-living issues, noting that increased taxation, rising prices and stagnant wages have placed heavy burden on the people,' he said. David said Anwar had made repeated campaign promises to reduce fuel prices, review highway tolls and deliver justice in the Teoh Beng Hock case, but there has been little visible progress, leaving voters disappointed. He said since taking office, Anwar has shown 'more theatrics than tangible results.' 'The nation urgently needs structural reforms and pragmatic economic policies, rather than political shows and empty slogans,' he said. 5,500 take part in Friendship Run

Malaysia-China Friendship Run 2025, held early Sunday morning at Padang Merdeka to commemorate the 51st anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China. Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew flagged off the 7km run on behalf of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The route stretched along scenic Likas Bay, turning at the Bay 21 roundabout and ending back at Padang Merdeka. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt, Chinese Consul General Zhu Xinglong and Malaysia-China Friendship Association Sabah President Dr Oh Ei Sun. Dr Oh said the event aimed to honour the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations. Christina praised the organisers and expressed hope that the run would become an attractive cultural activity for visitors. 'I hope tourists will be able to join future runs as a value-added experience. She expressed pride in joining the celebration, describing the event as a symbol of shared ideals between the two nations.
