MAHB ready to welcome delegations for 46th Asean summit

The Sun21-05-2025
SEPANG: Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the country's airport operator, is actively finalising preparations to welcome the ASEAN delegations attending the 46th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
MAHB Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said among the major preparations being carried out are the enhancement of facilities and protocols at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, as well as several other airports nationwide that will be involved in receiving distinguished guests from ASEAN countries.
'The key initiatives include upgrading the VIP Room and Bunga Raya Complex at KLIA, providing dedicated immigration lanes and exclusive reception counters, and coordinating the arrival of delegations travelling on commercial flights in a more organised and seamless manner.
'Additionally, promotional materials for ASEAN 2025 have started appearing across various platforms, including the Flight Information Display System (FIDS), KLIATV, and official social media channels,' he told Bernama.
As part of efforts to promote Malaysia on the international stage, Mohd Izani said MAHB is also stepping up initiatives to showcase the country's rich arts, culture, and heritage across its airports.
This includes the introduction of a 'Heritage Lane', featuring displays of photographs showcasing the country's historic building structures, traditional business premises such as nasi kandar stalls and old-school barber shops, exhibitions of traditional Baba and Nyonya attire, as well as cultural performances including traditional dances at several airport terminals.
Specifically for the ASEAN delegations, he said the Bunga Raya Complex and VIP waiting areas at several airports have also been redecorated with elements that reflect Malaysia's unique identity, culture, and traditions, creating a welcoming atmosphere that embodies national pride and respect for the delegates.
'As the airport operator responsible for managing the country's main gateways, MAHB consistently undertakes initiatives to showcase Malaysia's arts, culture and heritage at our airports, not only for receiving the ASEAN delegations but also as an early effort leading up to the 2026 Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' he said.
He said MAHB remains committed to ensuring all aspects of the welcoming process and movements of the ASEAN delegations are conducted smoothly, with dignity and prestige, thereby strengthening Malaysia's image on the international stage.
Apart from that, Mohd Izani said security aspects were also given priority through close collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police to guarantee the safe and seamless movement of the delegations throughout the event.
He said MAHB has also been working closely with the Foreign Ministry, the Ceremonial and International Conference Secretariat Division (BIUPA), and other government agencies since last year to ensure that airports in the country are fully prepared to welcome the arrival of delegations from various ASEAN nations.
Meanwhile, a Bernama survey found that the route from KLIA to the capital's city centre is now lively with vibrant decoration, including banners and billboards carrying ASEAN-themed messages to greet the leaders and delegations arriving for ASEAN 2025.
The decorations, which have been installed along key routes such as the KLIA Expressway, MEX Expressway, Sungai Besi Expressway and areas around the government administration complex in Putrajaya, not only enhance the festive atmosphere but also offer a warm visual welcome, reflecting Malaysia's role as host nation.
Banners featuring the official ASEAN logo are prominently displayed on lampposts and along highway dividers, adding a symbolic and dignified touch to the route that the dignitaries will travel.
Also stealing the spotlight is the digital billboard on the KLIA Expressway displaying the greeting 'Selamat Datang' with the ASEAN logo, for delegates to witness as they leave the airport heading to KLCC.
The ASEAN Summit will begin with a senior officials' meeting on May 23, followed by a ministerial meeting on May 25, while the heads of government meeting will begin on May 26.
The theme of 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' has been adopted as a unifying basis for regional and global engagement. Malaysia's commitment is to strengthen ASEAN centrality, foster economic cooperation and champion the principles of inclusivity and sustainability.

Uncertainties over US interest rates will likely see the ringgit trade around RM4.20-4.22 this week

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The ringgit is expected to hover between RM4.20 and RM4.22 this week as traders and investors remain cautious over the trajectory of US interest rates. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the release of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes next Thursday, Aug 20 (Wednesday, Aug 19, in the US) could offer more clarity on the state of the US economy, particularly after two FOMC members dissented from the recent decision and favoured a 25-basis-point rate cut. Meanwhile, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd said that markets continued to swing between two and three US Federal Reserve (Fed) cuts over the past few weeks. "We maintain our base case for two, underpinned by evidence that firms are absorbing tariff costs, a trend that is unsustainable and likely to squeeze margins,' it said in a research note. Moreover, the investment bank said further easing would require either a major deterioration in the next jobs report or a significantly dovish tone from Fed chair Jerome Powell. "Hence, we expect the ringgit to range around RM4.22 to RM4.23 against the greenback in the near term,' it added. On Thursday, the ringgit appreciated to the 4.18 level against the US dollar, its strongest level in more than six weeks. The last time it reached a similar high was on July 1, when it hit 4.1805. Meanwhile, on a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2085/2155 versus 4.2420/2480 previously. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8653/8702 from 2.8720/8763 the previous week and rose versus the euro to 4.9185/9267 from 4.9381/9451, but declined against the British pound to 5.7050/7145 from 5.7034/7114 The ringgit also trended firmer against Asean currencies. The local note improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.2820/2877 from 3.3014/3064 at the end of last week, inched up versus the Thai baht to 12.9760/13.0032 from 13.1173/1419, gained versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.8 from 260.3/260.8 and strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.37/7.39 from 7.43/7.44 in the preceding week. - Bernama

Sun Bus aims to be leading player in Asean EV bus market

JOHOR BAHRU: Sun Bus Tech Sdn Bhd aims to be among Malaysia's top three bus manufacturers within five to 10 years and a leading player in the Asean electric vehicle (EV) bus market. Its chief executive officer, Shyan Phang, said the outlook for Malaysia's EV bus sector remains strong, driven by government plans to procure a further 1,100 units by 2030. 'At present, the EV bus market in Malaysia is fully dependent on government purchases. Last year's tender for 250 units has been concluded, and more orders are expected annually. This presents a big opportunity for local manufacturers,' she told Bernama. The Johor-based company has equipped its assembly facility with EV-specific infrastructure, including dual-gun direct-current fast chargers, portable chargers and special safety containers for battery storage. 'We also use Swiss technology for aluminium bus bodies, which are rust-resistant and can last 15 years to 20 years. The total life-cycle cost is lower than that of steel-bodied buses,' Phang said. Sun Bus Tech plans to expand its EV bus market to Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, with market visits starting this month. The company also works closely with chassis, battery and charger suppliers to improve efficiency, range and passenger capacity. However, Phang said challenges remain, including high acquisition costs, insufficient charging infrastructure and limited range for long-distance operations. 'For EV adoption to truly work here, infrastructure, policy and operator readiness must align. With continued government support, I am optimistic the industry will grow rapidly.' She acknowledged that the main challenges to EV adoption in the Asean region are high costs, limited charging infrastructure and range limitations that do not yet meet the needs of tour or charter bus operators. 'For the tourism bus segment, EV is still not practical. Charging infrastructure needs to be addressed first. But I am confident that with government support, the public EV bus market will continue to grow,' Phang said.

Sepang Circuit charts new growth path, sets 10-year plan for expansion

KUALA LUMPUR: After weathering the financial strain due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is charting a new growth trajectory, anchored by land monetisation, strategic investments and expanded commercial offerings. SIC chief executive officer (CEO) Azhan Shafriman Hanif said the circuit is finalising a 10-year long-term business plan to unlock the commercial potential of its 303-hectare landbank. "We only fully utilise about 50 per cent of the land during international events. The rest sits idle most of the year. We want to change that by bringing in investors to develop hotels, motorsport facilities, vehicle storage, attractions and food and beverage (F&B) outlets," he told Bernama in an interview recently. A key obstacle was the unresolved land tenure, which is now close to being ironed out, said Azhan Shafriman He noted that although the Finance Ministry (MOF) took over SIC's facilities from Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) in 2009, the land remained under MAHB's ownership. "Any investor would ask, who do I sign the lease with? And we couldn't answer that directly. With the sub-lease agreement now progressing, we can finally negotiate long-term leases and unlock investment opportunities," he added. Azhan Shafriman, who took the helm in April 2020, said the early years of his leadership were marked by crisis management, as COVID-19 halted all large-scale events, which were the circuit's core revenue driver. "It was tough. We couldn't lay off staff or cut salaries, being under the MOF and the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS). But we had to tighten allowances and pause overtime," he recalled. Despite the challenges, the downtime became an opportunity to "tidy up" long-standing legacy issues, including resolving tax matters and upgrading a non-functional sewerage treatment plant that had been neglected since 2015. "We managed to secure funding through MOF and KBS to fix the sewage infrastructure and upgrade piping systems that hadn't been looked at in years," he said. In 2023, SIC turned profitable for the first time since the pandemic, with the return of international events like MotoGP. "That year marked our turning point. In 2022, we had just six months to prepare for MotoGP after the borders reopened in April. But we pulled it off," said Azhan Shafriman, noting that 2022 was his first MotoGP season since taking on his role as SIC's CEO. Beyond motorsports, he envisions transforming Sepang into a lifestyle hub with improved amenities for both visitors and staff. A small but symbolic first step was the opening of a lakeside café that is currently the only F&B outlet within the circuit compound. "It sounds simple, but before this, you had to drive out just to get lunch. We need more eateries, convenience stores, and family-friendly spaces. We want people to come here, hang out, and enjoy more than just the races," he added. Azhan Shafriman said discussions were ongoing to develop commercial plots for local F&B brands and everyday conveniences to serve event-goers, staff, and nearby communities. He added that SIC's presence brings a tangible spillover effect to small traders and communities around Sepang. "It serves the community. Sepang is already built on two prongs, namely sports and tourism, and what we are doing supports both," he said. Although the circuit no longer hosts the Formula 1, SIC has grown into a buzzing motorsports and entertainment hub, with a calendar packed to the brim and fully booked well into next year. The crowds have also returned, and the recent Super GT saw over 78,000 spectators, boosted by a collaboration with the Nihon Matsuri festival, said Azhan Shafriman. He highlighted that last year, SIC welcomed around 200,000 to 300,000 spectators across all events. "We have been doing more than just motorsports. You need music, food, lifestyle – that's how we build a crowd," he added. Azhan believes that SIC's strategic location, being near Port Klang and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, gives it a unique edge to be a regional hub for motorsports, lifestyle and automotive showcases. "Let's say you hold an auto show here. Not only do you see the cars, but you can actually test them on the track. You can't do that on a normal road," he said. SIC has already lined up concerts, exhibitions and conventions throughout the year, while also courting organisers for new events in 2026. Upcoming highlights include the Malaysian Festival of Speed (MFOS), featuring drift events and karting slalom to be held in September. With MotoGP remaining its flagship event, Azhan Shafriman said SIC's strategy is to anchor international races while drawing in local fans through creative, diversified offerings.
