Lineker surprised Arsenal didn't rival Chelsea & Man Utd for 'exciting' striker

Metro09-06-2025
England legend Gary Lineker is surprised Arsenal did not push harder to sign Liam Delap and believes the striker could be the 'missing ingredient' for Chelsea.
Chelsea beat off strong competition from Manchester United to lure Delap away from Ipswich this summer, with the Blues capturing the 22-year-old forward for a fee of just £30million.
Though Arsenal had been tentatively linked, it's understood the Gunners decided to focus their efforts on other attacking targets overseas, namely RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres.
Delap has put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, tying him to the west London giants until 2031.
Cleary desperate to make an immediate impression under Enzo Maresca, the young centre-forward has turned down the chance to represent England at the upcoming Under-21 Championship in order to play for Chelsea at the Club World Cup.

'It's an interesting one. I thought maybe Arsenal would go for him. Perhaps they did? I don't know,' ex-England, Tottenham and Barcelona striker Lineker said on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football.
'But Chelsea have got their man. We said many times this season that Chelsea also needed back-up for [Nicolas] Jackson up top, or an alternative.
'I think he's a young, exciting centre-forward.
'I saw someone say they saw a bit of a young Alan Shearer in him. Shearer with a full head of hair!
'I think that's the only thing that Chelsea were missing really.'
Lineker has been impressed by Delap's 'intelligent' movement on the pitch and is confident the attacker has the mentality to succeed at Chelsea.
'Jackson's got something in him, but his finishing isn't as good as a could be and if Delap does realise his full potential, that might just be the missing ingredient. We'll see,' he added.
'What I see in him is movement which is intelligent, I see someone that's not scared… I know that sounds ridiculous for a centre-forward but I judge it on when he's goes one-on-one with the goalkeeper, I think he'll finish, he'll score.
'Certain players you get that and now he's got to prove it at a bigger club. I know he was at Manchester City, but he didn't really feature much there and he has done at Ipswich.
'He's now got to step into the limelight, it's a big club, Chelsea, they won a Chelsea, of course, this season as well, so he'll go into this season with a very good side.
'He'll have to deal with pressure, but you get a feeling that it's not going to faze him and he's a very, very good finisher.
'That's the most important thing, having a cool head in those circumstances, and I think Chelsea have got a good one.
'You can never be sure, obviously, but I've obviously been singing his praises for quite a long time.'
Alan Shearer was similarly upbeat about Chelsea's 'smart' piece of transfer business and feels Delap is 'only going to get better' over the coming years.
'I like him as well. For £30m, I think it's a no-brainer,' the ex-Newcastle and England striker, the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer, chimed in.
'I think Chelsea have got a great deal and I gather that there were other big clubs in for him. More Trending
'For Chelsea to get him at that price, for me, that's very, very good business because he's only going to get better.
'I think he's a bit old-fashioned, he's like a throwback from what a centre-forward was maybe 20 or 30 years ago where they were all in fashion: aggressive, horrible to play against, doesn't mind mixing it up and can run in behind.
'Obviously, he scores goals. The number of goals he scored in a really struggling team, that is only going to get better.
'At his age, his ability he's got now… I think he's got a really bright future and I would have liked to have seen Newcastle get him, but for whatever reason he's decided to go with Chelsea and I think that's a really smart move for them.'

John Terry names Chelsea star who is 'best in the world in his position'

Chelsea legend John Terry has named the one player in Enzo Maresca's current squad who is the 'best in the world in his position'. Some football pundits have tipped Chelsea to challenge for the Premier League title this season after the team's huge improvements in 2024-25. The Blues landed the Conference League title last term, returned to the Premier League top four and then won the Club World Cup this summer. Chelsea have strengthened their squad ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, signing the likes of Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jorrel Hato, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez. Ahead of Chelsea's Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Terry has claimed that Reece James is the best right-back on the planet. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Chelsea captain James has struggled with injury problems in recent seasons but Terry is still a massive fan of the 25-year-old defender. 'For Reece, concentrate on staying fit and having a fully-fit season for him is the most important thing,' Terry told The Sun. 'He can make such a difference. We've seen the quality. When Reece is at it, he is the world's best right-back. 'When you've picked up a couple of injuries like Reece has had, it's difficult to really feel like you belong. 'So when you start demanding from people around you, when you're the one not playing, that's also very difficult. 'When you're in the starting line-up week in, week out, it's easy to command and run the dressing room — and the standards of the football club.' James only made 12 Premier League starts last season, missing the first three games due to a red card suspension before picking up a hamstring issue. The England international has made a total of 190 appearances for Chelsea to date. Quizzed about Chelsea's hopes of clinching the Premier League title in 2025-26, Terry added: 'I really liked the honesty from the manager [last season] because the message is clear to the players. We're not there yet. 'If you're the manager now coming into that dressing room and you're going, 'We've got a chance this year', the players will think we've got a chance. This year I think his message will be different. More Trending 'He was spot on because we were young, it was a little bit up and down last year. At the moment, we're clearly building and moving in the right direction. 'I'm not sitting here saying I want to wait five years to win another Premier League. We've got to go into it 100 per cent with the mindset of going, 'Yes, we have to try to win the league this year'. 'Without a shadow of a doubt. But there's other big competitions as well. 'You fight right to the end until it's not possible. The Premier League was done last season, Liverpool were very good last year and rightly the winners. We have to compete for that again.' Joe Cole urges Chelsea to make 'logical' signing before transfer deadline

Joe Cole has implored Chelsea to make a 'logical' signing before the transfer deadline to boost their Premier League title aspirations. The Blues, who finished fourth last season, begin their 2025-26 campaign on Sunday against London rivals Crystal Palace. A number of new faces will be involved in Chelsea's Premier League opener with the club already spending around £250m on new recruits this summer. Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Jorrel Hato and Liam Delap after just a few of the new signings to arrive through the doors at Stamford Bridge. Cole has been largely impressed by Chelsea's transfer activity this summer and has especially high hopes for Pedro, backing the Brazilian to go to 'another level' following his £60m move from Brighton. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. But the Stamford Bridge hero believes Chelsea need to sign a new goalkeeper before the summer transfer window shuts if they have serious aspirations of challenging for the title. Chelsea were in talks to sign Mike Maignan from AC Milan earlier in the summer but now appear to be prepared to put their faith in error-prone Robert Sanchez. Discussing the goalkeeping situation in west London, Cole told TNT Sports: 'They kept chopping and changing last season. 'Look at all the great teams who have won titles, they've all got a top, top goalkeeper. For me it's just logical that we need to sort that out.' Asked for his hopes for new Chelsea striker Pedro, Cole added: 'He basically came off the beach and started banging the goals in at the Club World Cup. 'He looks like he's been a Chelsea player for years. I know the people at Chelsea were really, really pleased with the summer transfer window. 'Joao Pedro can play in any of the front-three positions and they probably don't actually know how good a player they've got right now. 'I think there's another level for him to go up.' More Trending While Cole wants a new goalkeeper to arrive at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea's current transfer priorities are Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho. The Blues are still in talks with RB Leipzig over a deal for Netherlands international Simons, while they are lining up a bid for Manchester United winger Garnacho. Chelsea are also keen to offload several players before the transfer deadline, including Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell. They are open to offers for Nicolas Jackson following the signings of Pedro and Delap but have set an extremely high asking price for the Senegal striker.
