Oil prices hit multi-week highs amid US-China trade talks

NEW YORK: Oil prices hit multi-week highs on Monday, buoyed by a weaker US dollar, while investors awaited news from US-China trade talks in London in hopes a deal could boost the global economic outlook and subsequently fuel demand.
Brent crude futures settled 57 cents higher, or 0.9 per cent, to US$67.04 a barrel. During the session, the benchmark rose to US$67.19 a barrel, the highest since April 28.
US West Texas Intermediate crude rose 71 cents, or 1.1 per cent, to US$65.29. The contract reached US$65.38 a barrel during the session, the highest since April 4.
A weaker US dollar gave some support to oil prices, as the dollar index dropped 0.3 per cent, making oil cheaper for holders of other currencies.
Last week, Brent rose 4 per cent and WTI gained 6.2 per cent as the prospect of a US-China trade deal boosted risk appetite for some investors.
"Much of this advance appears technically driven and such rallies can easily subside without new bullish headlines," analysts at energy advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates said in a note. "Much attention will be given to the ongoing US-China trade talks."
US President Donald Trump and China's leader Xi Jinping spoke by telephone on Thursday before US and Chinese officials met in London on Monday to calm trade tensions between the two nations.
A trade deal between the United States and China could support the global economic outlook and in turn boost demand for commodities including oil.
Monday's talks could dampen the impact on prices of Chinese data releases, IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said.
Chinese export growth slowed to a three-month low in May as US tariffs curbed shipments while factory gate deflation deepened to its worst in two years, heaping pressure on the world's second-largest economy at home and abroad.
"Bad timing for crude oil, which was testing the top of the range and knocking on the door of a technical break above US$65," Sycamore said, referring to WTI prices.
The data also showed that China's crude oil imports declined in May to the lowest daily rate in four months as state-owned and independent refiners began planned maintenance.
The prospect of a potential China-US trade deal outweighed concern over the price impact from increased output by the OPEC+ group of oil producers next month.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' oil output rose in May by less than the volume planned, a Reuters survey found, as Iraq made further cuts to compensate for earlier pumping above target and Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates made smaller hikes than allowed.
OPEC pumped 26.75 million barrels per day last month, up 150,000 bpd from April's total, the survey showed on Monday, with Saudi Arabia making the largest increase.

China, South Korea must safeguard free trade, Xi tells Lee

Seoul has long trod a fine line between top trading partner China and defence guarantor the US. (Links pic) BEIJING : Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged South Korea's new President Lee Jae-myung today to work with Beijing to uphold free trade and defend 'multilateralism', state media said. 'In a phone call with Lee, Xi urged Beijing and Seoul to 'inject more certainty into regional and international situations',' Xinhua said, as well as to 'promote strategic cooperative partnership to a higher level'. 'A healthy, stable, and continuously deepening China–South Korea relationship aligns with the trend of the times,' Xi said. 'Close bilateral cooperation and multilateral coordination should be maintained to jointly uphold multilateralism and free trade, ensuring the stability and smooth functioning of global and regional industrial and supply chains,' the Chinese leader added. South Korea's new centre-left leader was elected in a landslide last week after winning a snap election triggered by his predecessor's disastrous martial law declaration. Seoul has long trod a fine line between top trading partner China and defence guarantor the US. Relations suffered under Lee's predecessor Yoon Suk Yeol, who cleaved close to the US and sought to improve ties with former colonial master Japan. However, both countries' export-driven economies have now found themselves in the crosshairs of US President Donald Trump's tariff blitz. Lee hinted on the campaign trail that he would seek to improve ties with Beijing. He has also raised alarm by saying that a future conflict between China and Taiwan would not be South Korea's concern.

Investors itching for progress in US-China talks

Signs of cooling wage growth could be a relief for Bank of England policymakers who are divided on the approach to further monetary policy easing. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : With precious little to report out of Sino-US trade talks in London, investors are ready to pounce on almost any sign that a thaw in the frigid relationship between the two superpowers is just around the corner. Stocks in Asia are creeping higher, as are US and European equity futures, while the dollar was also a tad firmer after President Donald Trump said he was getting 'good reports' from yesterday's meeting with China. Talks resume at 9am today at Lancaster House and markets want a deal to flesh out details around US tech export controls and those around Chinese rare earths, and of course, where the final average rate of tariffs will settle. Recent data indicates the trade war is taking a toll on both major economies, which could soon rattle other major economies. Global investors are also in the market for fresh trade deals, with about a month left before Trump's tariff pause expires. Also expected out of the UK will be an employment report with investors and the Bank of England (BoE) keen on how pay growth – a reflection of broader price pressures – fared in April. Signs of cooling wage growth could be a relief for BoE policymakers who are currently divided on the approach to further monetary policy easing. Meanwhile, the global healthcare sector was caught in the crossfire as vaccine sceptic US health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr fired all members of a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel of vaccine experts. The move could be a headache for companies such as GSK, Sanofi, AstraZeneca, Moderna and BioNTech as they face longer waits for vaccine approvals. Advertising firms weren't spared from scrutiny either as the Wall Street Journal reported that the US Federal Trade Commission has sought information from some of the industry's leading firms. Omnicom, WPP, Dentsu, Interpublic Group and Publicis Groupe were among those asked by the watchdog on whether advertising and advocacy groups violated antitrust laws by coordinating boycotts of certain sites. Key developments that could influence markets today include UK May British Retail Consortium sales, UK April employment data, the US 3-year Treasury note auction, and the Reserve Bank of Australia governance board meeting.

Sarawak to work with Chinese companies to develop floating solar power on Bakun reservoir

State Deputy Utility Minister Datuk Ibrahim Baki (standing second right) witnessing the MOU signing between the state Utility and Telecommunication Ministry, China Three Gorges International Ltd and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co Ltd in Shanghai on Tuesday (June 10). KUCHING: Sarawak will work with two Chinese companies to look into developing floating solar on the reservoir of the Bakun hydroelectric plant (HEP). The state Utility and Telecommunication Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with China Three Gorges International Ltd (CTGI) and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co Ltd at the International Solar Photovoltaic and Smart Energy Conference (SNEC PV Expo) in Shanghai, China, on Tuesday (June 10). The MOU sets the framework for the Sarawak government, CTGI and Shanghai Electric to jointly undertake studies and collaborate to explore the potential development of floating solar, with a capacity not exceeding 1,000MW, on the Bakun reservoir. State Deputy Utility Minister Datuk Ibrahim Baki represented Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg to witness the MOU signing together with Shanghai mayor Gong Zheng. Also present was a delegation from Sarawak Energy Bhd led by its group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili. Delivering Abang Johari's keynote address at the event, Ibrahim said the partnership with CTGI and Shanghai Electric supported Sarawak's aim of ensuring energy security and environmental sustainability. "Sarawak currently has a generation capacity of about 5,900MW, predominantly from renewable hydropower sources. "By 2030, Sarawak targets a 10GW generation capacity and 15GW by 2035, with renewable sources making up over 60% of the capacity mix. "With its vast renewable energy resources, Sarawak has the potential to become a renewable energy powerhouse of the region," he said. The keynote address also highlighted Sarawak's growing focus on solar energy, including solar-hybrid rural electrification, hydrogen-integrated solar systems and the net energy metering scheme supporting solar adoption in housing developments. Additionally, Sarawak's first large-scale solar installation at the Batang Ai HEP began generating power in December last year. The 500MW floating solar farm, spanning over 190ha on the Batang Ai reservoir, also marks Sarawak's first integrated hydroelectric and solar power scheme. "This initiative will pave the way for further development of floating solar in Sarawak at other hydropower reservoirs through privately funded investments," the Premier's address said.
