Waheeda relives Ray film memories
Kolkata: At a special Nandan screening of 'Abhijaan' organised a day prior to the director's birth anniversary on May 2 by the Society for the preservation of
Satyajit Ray
Archives, a video featuring
Waheeda Rehman
's recollections of Ray was presented to the audience. Attendees were treated to her recollections regarding her casting in 'Abhijaan' starring her along with
Soumitra Chatterjee
, Robi Ghosh and Ruma Guha Thakurta and how Ray conveyed to her about his inability to cast her in 'Shatranj Ke Khilari', despite having earlier promised to do so when directing a Hindi film.
The screening drew a good crowd with Ray Society's member secretary Sandip Ray and president Prasadranjan Ray in attendance. A brochure was distributed that gave a brief history of the making of the film. In the 60s, some assistants of Ray had acquired the rights to Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay's novel and requested Ray to write its screenplay. One of Ray's associates was assigned to direct the project. Ray prepared a treatment. Since he was not busy with any other assignment then, Ray decided to accompany the unit to Birbhum where the story was set. A muhurat with a day's shooting was planned. The unit requested that Ray himself direct the first day's work. Once done, others in the unit developed cold feet and insisted that he take on the reins of the director. Ray insisted on re-writing the screenplay and also made changes to the cast.

He suggested Rehman for the lead female role. Ray sent a letter to Rehman mentioning: "My leading man Soumitra Chatterjee and my unit believe that you are most suitable for the role of Gulaabi, the heroine of my next film." In her video, Rehman recalled Ray's first remark on a telephonic call: "Waheeda, you earn a lot of money in Hindi films. I make films on small budgets". Rehman had requested Ray not to mention the remuneration bit and highlighted that it was an honour to be considered to work in his film.
The language barrier was sorted since her character hailed from the Bihar-Bengal border and conversed in a blend of Bhojpuri and Bengali. Ray also asked her to shoot the film from start to finish and not take breaks in between the shooting to work in Mumbai. In the video, Rehman also mentioned that Ray had got in touch with her during the making of 'Shatranj Ke Khilari' and said: "Waheeda, I promised to cast you, but I don't feel the role in this film will suit you".
Though there were some technical glitches in the screening, many in the audience were overwhelmed with the film. "It is the first time I watched the film on the big screen. Soumitra-da was going against his grain to portray this character. It was overwhelming to watch Waheedaji's subtle acting and the nuances of Soumendu Roy's cinematography," said Riddhi Goswami of the Ray Society.

This actress was killed in a plane crash, Karisma Kapoor played her role in biopic; She was…, movie is…
Some accidents leave behind scars so deep that their stories are never forgotten. The shadow of the Ahmedabad plane crash is one such tragedy that won't fade away anytime soon. Screams, cries, sobs, tears, and the scene of death… it's impossible to forget. Every death carries a story. History has witnessed many such heart-wrenching accidents that leave lasting wounds. One such story is that of the famous Indian film actress Zubeidaa Begum. In the 1940s, she was known for her courage and beauty, which became part of cinematic history. Tragically, Zubeidaa too lost her life in a horrific plane crash, a tragedy that is still remembered even after all these years. Many questions have been raised about this accident. Was it an accident or a conspiracy? Usually, every accident leaves this question. In that accident, Zubaidaa Begum's husband, who was Maharaja Vijayendra 'Victor' Singh of Fatehpur, was also killed. A story that ended before it could be completed, leaving many questions unanswered. Even today, that question often comes in the mind. After all, what happened in the plane that day? It is worth mentioning that Zubeidaa Begum was a Hindi film actress who worked in numerous films. She began her career during the silent film era, and whether the roles were small or big, she performed each one with full dedication. However, beyond her film career, she had a personal life that not everyone was aware of, not even her own family. Her father, in particular, was unaware of her passion for acting and was strictly against her working in films. Despite all the opposition, Zubeidaa Begum carved out space for her dreams and emotions. This unwavering determination was the most remarkable quality of her personality. Zubeida Begum's life, full of mysteries and ups and downs, was a film story in itself, and this is why famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal made a film on her in the year 2001, named Zubeidaa. This National Award-winning film holds a special place in Shyam Benegal's filmography, which was a new link to Mammo and Sardari Begum, but it was a historic opportunity for Karisma Kapoor in the role of Zubeidaa. In the movie, Karisma Kapoor portrayed Zubeidaa's life on screen very well and also garnered praise. Manoj Bajpayee is also in the movie. He played the role of Maharaja Vijayendra Singh. The special thing is that the screenplay of this film was written by none other than Zubeidaa's real-life son, writer and filmmaker Khalid Mohammad. There are not many stories of Zubeda's life after marriage. Some things are said broadly, which Shyam Benegal has shown in the film. After this, the king's political ambitions started growing. He formed a party and took the initiative to contest elections. One day, when he was about to go to the election campaign, Zubeidaa also insisted on going with him. The Raja did not want to take Zubeidaa along, but she was adamant. It is said that the king himself was very fond of flying planes. But the night before the accident, he could not sleep properly. The plane crash happened while going for an election campaign It was the ill-fated morning of 26 January, 1952. The plane in which Raja and Zubeidaa flew crashed in Godwar, Rajasthan. Both of them died in this accident. Shyam Benegal's film on the plane crash is considered notable, which is mentioned many times. It became a cult classic. It shows that the actress had to face difficulties from her people while fulfilling her ambitions on many fronts. Shyam Benegal has presented the companionship shown by Karisma Kapoor and Rekha in their roles as the two wives of Manoj Bajpayee, who played the king, very well.
