
It's last orders for the onboard bar. Flying is no fun any more
This long-conditioned ritual at 37,000ft skidded to a halt this month. Virgin Atlantic — our 'fun' airline to the more sensible British Airways — said it would axe its beloved bars by 2028; the space will instead be used for more premium seating called 'retreat suites'. It also said it would introduce free Starlink wi-fi across its fleet by the end of 2027.
Blame sober Gen Z obsessed with wellness, blame squeezed airline margins, blame our hyperconnected world. I'm dismayed — and thirsty.
I have fond, and squiffy, memories of in-flight bars. One of the most ridiculous flights I've been on was — no surprise — a Virgin service to New York for 2019's World Pride, staffed entirely by LGBT crew. The DJ Jodie Harsh took over the bar on the Airbus A330 and we passengers, giddy on gin miniatures and mini pretzels, jumped around to Spice Up Your Life somewhere over Newfoundland. It's hard to imagine that kind of stunt today.
Other times it's more prosaic. These extra social spaces — installed on all Virgin aircraft at great expense — are an escape valve from your seat, particularly if you're flying long haul. That there are gin and tonics and delicious little bags of crisps and sweets on tap is neither here nor there. 'We have loved the bar, but we have a new vision for social spaces: the retreat suites, the private space built for sharing and socialising,' Virgin Atlantic said. Meh.
Onboard bars still do exist, but increasingly limply. The Gulfies, including Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad, all offer social spaces only on their monstrous Airbus A380s, but on the few times I've sneaked in they have been pin-drop quiet. When I flew on the weird Global Airlines inaugural flight in May — the founder's aim being to take the airline back to the golden age of flying — I spent a lot of it propping up the SkyPub on the upper deck of the A380. Qantas's A350 aircraft, which it uses for ultra-long-haul flights from London to Australia, instead have a 'wellbeing zone' for stretching and hydrating … and not the fun kind.
The advent of free onboard wi-fi is a further dent to the in-flight experience, forcing us to stay connected to the ground. Lots of airlines, like British Airways, offer free wi-fi to their premium passengers and members of their loyalty schemes. Others, like JetBlue and Air New Zealand, offer it to everyone, regardless of cabin. Other carriers are trialling streaming entertainment straight to your phone — which I guess is fine and perfectly logical. But, but, but. I spend my life looking at my phone — is it too much to ask to stare at a slightly bigger screen to watch some mindless guff for a few hours? The sky is the last sanctuary we have.
Rhys Jones, aviation editor of the frequent-flyer website Head for Points, agrees that 'it's a shame to see the bar go'. He adds: 'It was part of what set Virgin Atlantic apart. Without it, Virgin will lose a little bit of its sparkle. That said, I understand why it has made this decision: attitudes have changed and competition has become cut-throat. Increasingly we are seeing airlines maximise every square foot of space on board planes and, unfortunately, the bar just simply didn't pay its way.'
I think I speak for a lot of frequent flyers when I say: one for the road?

From The Mountain's Edge by Ed Jackson (HQ £16.99, 250pp) With the sun shining brightly, though not for much longer, Ed Jackson and his small team of climbers stood trapped at 22,300ft, just below the summit of Himlung Himal deep in the Nepalese Himalayas. They couldn't go forward as they were surrounded by hidden crevasses, each covered by thick, fluffy snow that had failed to freeze. They would only know if the drop hidden by the snow was a few feet or several hundred when they stepped on it. There was clearly no route through the brilliant white of the crevasse field. Isolated in this freezing wilderness, driven back by treacherous glaciers and terrible snow conditions, they could go no further. They had no water, shelter or food. They hadn't slept for 36 hours and their bodies were battered and bruised from the days of gruelling climbing. It was too late to even attempt to descend further. There was no chance of a helicopter rescue till the next morning. As the sun set, the temperature began to drop to -25C (-13F). They'd have to spend the night in the open and hope for the best... How would they ever make it? There used to be a flood of mountain expedition books from publishers – and I should know, as I love climbing and have a ton of them on my shelves. Part of it was a huge interest stemming from the 1953 Everest triumph led by John Hunt's largely British team, and partly a general vogue for exploration and a growing love of the outdoors. Now times have changed. Expedition books are no longer a sure-fire hit. Climbing has become too complicated with different grades of difficulty – with or without oxygen, with or without aid, new route or old route and so on – so it is hard for the general public to feel involved. What publishers – and readers – seem to like are relatable people telling stories of exceptional endeavour in an extreme environment, rather than some bearded superhero ticking off another mountain triumph. And there can be few more relatable – or likeable – heroes than Ed Jackson. A former professional rugby player with Bath and Wasps among others, his life was changed when he broke his neck at 28, in 2017, diving into the shallow end of a swimming pool. He suffered serious spinal injuries and some medics said he would never walk again, but he proved them wrong – though his left side doesn't function properly and he has problems controlling his temperature, as well as some bodily functions. But he wasn't going to let the accident define him. And, clearly driven by fierce determination, within a year he had summited Snowdon before turning his attention to higher, more demanding peaks. Sporting star: Before his accident Ed played rugby for Wasps He has founded a charity, Millimetres 2 Mountains (M2M), with his wife Lois to help people facing mental health challenges to use adventure to develop a brighter future. And this hugely enjoyable book –vivid, observant and written with a crisp unfussiness – is about Jackson's desire to push his limits yet further with the attempt to climb the 23,425ft Himlung Himal in 2022, accompanied by his three friends, Ben, Beetle, Arron and their guide Bigraj. It's a terrific adventure book as much as anything else, with vivid chapters on the beauty of Nepal and the warmth of the Nepalese, the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, the long trek to the mountain via the remotest village in the world, and the climbing through the crevasses of Himlung Humal. Jackson is under no illusions about what climbing entails. 'High-altitude mountaineering is suffering,' he writes. 'It strips you down to the point where every other word is an expletive, as it is the only way to explain what you are going through. 'Every step was a struggle and in the space of a few hours, we were accelerated into old age when every breath never quite gave us enough oxygen, so we would gasp for another. 'It's certainly not for everyone but for me it is the ultimate test of character and resilience and the rewards are unrivalled. 'You discover things about yourself you never knew existed and develop areas you have always wanted to strengthen.' That is as good a summation of the complex pleasures of climbing and mountaineering that I can think of. And there is great joy, too. Jackson writes: 'As I stared at the night sky the contrast of the physical output these climbs demanded compared with the mental clarity and calmness gained amazed me. In those moments I was truly present in my surroundings and life.' And back to the night on the bare mountain. As the temperature began to plummet, resigned to the fact that the mountain would just not let them pass, Jackson started to shake uncontrollably as the adrenaline from the climb wore off. All the team were struggling to stay awake, but they knew that falling asleep was how you died at these altitudes. Your core temperature drops when you sleep and that could be fatal when you are subjected to temperatures of -25C. Your heart would simply stop beating. They huddled together to preserve warmth, they sang, they told stories. As the icy cold seeped up through their bones from not moving, they all shivered violently. But Jackson remembered that this wasn't a bad sign. It was when you stopped shivering that you should be worried, as then your body is focusing on keeping your organs warm, which is the stage before dying. Eventually, they did make it to the morning. And morning means daylight and daylight means warmth. And eventually the rescue helicopter arrived. The team had survived. They may not have made it to the top but that's not really what climbing is about. It doesn't matter if you don't reach the summit, though it's important to have goals. What matters in climbing is the process, the friendships, the experience, the teamwork, and the fact that your life is in the hands of others, and theirs in yours. If it wasn't such an awful overused word, you could say it was the 'journey'. That's the final lesson for Jackson: his second brush with death after his accident makes him realise how much more living there was to do, with his wife, his family and his friends.

Brit tourists abandon Majorca with restaurants left empty as island rocked by protests
Tourist numbers in Majorca have plummeted, with some restaurants and hotels left half-empty as visitors appear to be abandoning the holiday hotspot amid growing unrest Hotels in Majorca are growing increasingly worried about a decline in tourist arrivals to the holiday destination. Not only are Germans seemingly avoiding the island, but British tourists also appear to be losing interest. The Balearic island is a favourite amongst European holidaymakers. Last year, an impressive 13.4 million tourists flocked to Majorca, including over two million Brits. Many are drawn by the island's stunning landscapes - from sandy beaches to towering mountains - and vibrant nightlife. However, the idyllic island has been rocked by a series of protests, with tens of thousands of locals hitting the streets to express their frustration at overtourism. Tourists are finding themselves more and more in the crosshairs of activists, who are hell-bent on generating negative publicity for the island to discourage visitors. This growing antagonism towards tourists seems to be taking its toll, with visitor numbers dropping in certain parts of the island. The resort areas hit hardest are Capdepera and Soller, says the Majorca Hotel Business Federation (FEHM), reports the Express. The worrying situation appears to be particularly problematic in the British market, which is showing signs of slow growth, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin. "While we don't have official statistics yet, information from our various associations indicates that Capdepera, which heavily relies on German tourism, and Soller are experiencing the most significant drops in visitor numbers," said María José Aguiló - the vice-president of FEHM. Pubs, cafés and eateries have all felt the impact of this peculiar mid-season slump, with outdoor seating areas sitting half-vacant. Some proprietors have reportedly even permitted employees to take time off during what would typically be amongst the peak trading weeks of the year. "We're seeing two distinct booking patterns emerge: advance reservations and last-minute bookings, making precise forecasting particularly challenging," explained Aguiló. FEHM's figures show that hotel occupancy levels have fallen short of projections since May, sparking concerns about what lies ahead. Nevertheless, the organisation maintains an optimistic outlook, stating it anticipates this season will match last year's performance. During the previous year, 18.7 million holidaymakers flocked to the Balearics, splashing out a staggering €22.38 billion - representing a 12% rise. German visitors continue to be the most valuable economic demographic across the Balearic Islands. They parted with €6 billion whilst holidaying in Majorca - outspending every other nation. British travellers came second, contributing €4.38 billion.

The results have been decided by the Henley Passport Index, the global official ranking of all the world's passports. In 2024, it was at a much stronger fourth position: passport owners had visa-free access to 191 destinations. Now, it's been reduced to 186.
