Horror hooks movie-goers, injecting cinemas with fresh energy

STORY: Move over Superman, there's a new hero at the box office.
Horror movies.
Murderous toys, vampires and zombies are killing it in movie theaters, at a time when saviors, sequels and reboots have grown stale among audiences – entertainment industry veterans say.

'What you can't do at home is sit in a dark room with a hundred other people, not on your phone, and jump. I think horror movies have really become an experience that can only be really felt outside the home in a movie theater.'
This year, 17 percent of tickets bought in North America have been for scary movies.
That figure was 11 percent in 2024, and 4 percent a decade ago, Comscore data compiled exclusively for Reuters shows.
Cinema owners have plenty of reasons to celebrate with box office performances like 'Sinners' and 'Final Destination: Bloodlines'.
And there are new instalments of popular horror franchises coming soon like 'The Conjuring: Last Rites.'
'One of the knocks on Hollywood and movies that we rely upon is that they just lack creativity. People are just trying the same old formulas that maybe worked five years ago but not necessarily working now. And I feel like today it's these horror directors that are really some of the most creative minds out there and they're taking chances that others aren't.'

'The horror customers, at least ours, tend to go to the movies more often than others. And I think it's because they're not as dependent on word of mouth or they don't need to know it's an Academy Award-winning potential hit before they commit to, you know, dropping money to go see it, they just are excited that there's a new, creative horror movie out there and they wanna come see it.'
Producers, studio execs and theater owners say horror has historically provided a safe outlet for people to cope with contemporary anxieties.
And let's face it - there is no lack of material to choose from: the aftershocks of a global pandemic, paranoia over AI and resurgent racism.
The productions are often low-budget, and allow greater risk-taking than higher-cost, higher-stakes films.
That creative freedom has attracted big name directors like Guillermo del Toro and Danny Boyle.
And audiences are responding. Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' is this year's third highest-grossing movie in the U.S. and Canada, Comscore says.
Horror has been a cinematic staple from its earliest days, when Thomas Edison filmed 'Frankenstein' on his motion picture camera in 1910.
But it didn't always get Hollywood's respect.
Perceptions began to change with the critical and commercial success of films like 'Psycho,' 'The Exorcist' and 'The Shining.'
The genre broke the $1 billion box office barrier in the U.S. and Canada for the first time in 2017.
The film adaptation of Stephen King's novel, 'It,' and Jordan Peele's 'Get Out' were big contributors.
Fast forward to 2024 – and the number of U.S. horror films that went into production was up 21 percent from the year before, researcher Ampere Analysis found.
And scary movies have been scooping up statues at the biggest awards ceremonies recently.
Movie theaters are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which sped up a shift towards watching at home over going out to the movies.
But many industry professionals say horror is a genre that manages to get people off their couch and into a theater where the environment heightens the experience.
'Now I think more than ever, to get people here in theaters, people want a good story. They love, you know, things like 'Barbie', where they know what's gonna happen. But for the most part, people want really good stories that engage them. And it feels like that's the genre where we're getting the most of that from.'

According to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE, on Wednesday, July 16, counsel for both parties met and conferred, mutually agreeing to reschedule Lively's deposition for Thursday, July 31, after it was initially scheduled for Thursday, July 17. A rep for Lively did not reply to PEOPLE's request for comment. PEOPLE has reached out to Baldoni's lawyer for comment. The deposition was scheduled to take place in an undisclosed location after the actress was granted a protective order on Monday, July 14. The change of dates comes amid Lively's lawsuit against Texas-based publicist and social media specialist Jed Wallace being dismissed on jurisdictional grounds earlier the same day. The actress filed a civil rights complaint against Wallace, the operator behind Texas-based crisis-management firm Street Relations, Inc., in December 2024, claiming that he was hired by Justin Baldoni's PR team (publicists Melissa Nathan and Jen Abel) to assist in an alleged smear campaign against her. While Lively claimed Wallace "weaponized a digital army around the country from New York to Los Angeles to create, seed and promote content that appeared to be authentic on social media platforms and internet chat forums," Judge Lewis J. Liman granted Wallace's motion to dismiss without prejudice. The judge's dismissal allows the plaintiff to refile the same claim or charges at a later time. This means Lively has until July 31 to file an amended complaint or sue Wallace in a different jurisdiction, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. A source with knowledge of the situation tells PEOPLE both sides wanted more time after the judge's ruling on Wednesday. In response to the dismissal, Lively's rep said in a statement shared with PEOPLE, "Ms. Lively respects the Court's decision, which has nothing to do with the merits of her allegations about Mr. Wallace's role in the smear campaign and relates solely to the procedural question of whether he is subject to jurisdiction in New York or elsewhere." "We currently are evaluating our numerous options for holding Mr. Wallace accountable for the pivotal role he served in the retaliatory effort that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties paid him at least tens of thousands of dollars a month to perform," the statement added. In December 2024, Lively accused It Ends With Us director-costar Baldoni of sexual harassment and retaliation, allegations he has adamantly denied. Box office projections for James Gunn's Superman have inevitably dropped this weekend after its big opening, but will David Corenswet's Man of Steel movie make enough to maintain a decent cruising altitude? After last weekend's final domestic box office tally was released on Monday, it was revealed that Superman officially earned $125 million from 4,135 theaters, which included $22.5 million in Thursday previews. The big question going into its second weekend is how much momentum the film can maintain against three new high-profile newcomers: Sony Pictures Entertainment's I Know What You Did Last Summer, Paramount Pictures' Smurfs and A24's Eddington. As of Wednesday, Superman is projected by Deadline to make $60 million from this Friday to Sunday, which is about a 52% drop in business from July 11-13. Box Office Pro is being more conservative with its second weekend projection for the film with a Friday to Sunday forecast of $45 million to $55 million, while Variety projects the film will make anywhere between $55 million to $62 million. Even at the low end of the trio of estimates, Superman will earn more than enough to maintain the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office. To date, the first film from Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC Universe at Warner Bros. has made $155 million domestically and $159.4 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $314.4 million. Superman had a $225 million production budget and spent $125 million on marketing, Variety reported. David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan in "Superman." 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' Is Projected To Open Best Among The New Films In Theaters The reboot of the 1997 slasher hit I Know What You Did Last Summer — featuring the return of the original film's stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt— is projected by Deadline to earn anywhere from $13 million to $17 million from 3,100 North American theaters. Variety projects $15 million to $17 million opening for the film, while Box Office Pro is casting a wider net with an opening projection of anywhere between $12 million to $18 million. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, I Know What You Did Last Summer had an $18 million production budget before prints and advertising costs. Paramount Pictures' animated feature Smurfs is projected by Variety to open with anywhere from $10 million to $12 million in ticket sales from 3,300 North American theaters against a $58 million production budget before P&A. Deadline's forecast for Smurfs — which stars the voices of Rihanna, John Goodmnan and James Corden — is roughly the same as Variety's, as the trade publication is projecting a domestic opening anywhere from the 'single digits' to $12 million. Box Office Pro, however, is much more confident in Smurfs' box office prospects and is projecting an opening of anywhere between $15 million to $20 million. Meanwhile, A24's Eddington— director Ari Aster's COVID-19 drama starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal — is projected by Deadline to earn less than $5 million from 2,111 theaters. Variety also forecasts a $5 million opening for Eddington. The film's production budget information has not been released.
