Trump ‘harming' US IQ with attacks on education

Acclaimed American writer Percival Everett is best known for his sharp satirical takes on race and American culture.
His latest novel, James, is a reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn told from the perspective of the enslaved character Jim. It earned him this year's Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and Author of the Year award at the British Book Awards.
Just last year, his novel Erasure was adapted into the Oscar-winning film American Fiction, a biting satire about a frustrated Black author who pens a wildly stereotypical novel about inner-city life as a joke, only to see it become a runaway success. The film calls out the publishing industry's racial biases and questions the tendency to limit Black storytelling to trauma and poverty narratives.
He is also a literature professor at the University of Southern California – one of many academic institutions facing major budget cuts from the Trump administration.
We asked him if the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should still be taught and whether 'James' should be taught alongside it.

Jamie Carragher in hysterics as Micah Richards destroyed in UCL intro on live TV

CBS Sports' coverage of the Champions League has won plenty of plaudits in recent years and Kate Scott left fans in stitches with a brilliant intro at Micah Richards' expense Micah Richards is usually the butt of Kate Scott's jokes during CBS Sports' coverage of the Champions League - but the popular host saved her best jab of the season till last with a ruthless introduction ahead of Saturday's showpiece final. CBS Sports' all-star panel, consisting of Scott, Richards, Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher, has been a huge hit with audiences in the United States and clips of their antics often go viral on social media. ‌ Scott usually starts shows by bigging up herself, Henry and Carragher before having some fun at Richards' expense - and she unleashed a corker to leave her colleagues in hysterics before Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan locked horns in Munich. ‌ After talking up Henry and Carragher's credentials, she moved onto a grinning Richards and said: "What's an American television show without a bit of entertainment? "The year was 2020 and CBS' search pivoted to Manchester - not the red side, there were already enough former Manchester United players on TV - who was available from City, they asked? "Quickly the search pivoted to defenders, to full-backs, to new stars of the modern game and there he was: a man with charisma, charm and an undeniable to find out Pablo Zableta wasn't available, so here is his back-up, Micah Richards!" ‌ Carragher was in stitches as Richards threw himself down on the desk in laughter. "You had me, you had me!," said the popular pundit as Scott and Henry joined in the laughs. Fans lapped up Scott's antics on social media as CBS Sports' coverage of the final kicked off with a bang. Thankfully, the football lived up to the hype, too, as PSG flew out the blocks. The French champions were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes courtesy of goals from Achraf Hakimi and Desire Doue to leave Inter with a mountain to climb. The former was slammed by fans online for refusing to celebrate his goal given a previous spell with Inter.

But one home cook left people scratching their heads after they revealed their attempt at a particular classic dish. 4 home-cook-slammed-sharing-attempt-999490755 Credit: Not known, clear with picture desk 4 home-cook-slammed-sharing-attempt-999490671 Credit: Not known, clear with picture desk 4 The foodie showed off their attempt at making lasagne on Facebook Credit: Getty Despite their best efforts, the food turned out nothing like you would expect, and some people even questioned what they meal was supposed to be in the first place. This came after the wannabe chef took to Facebook to show off their concoction with a picture from before it went into the over and after. "How do you make lasagne, mine came out crispy as hell and I want it soft, please help," the Facebook user wrote alongside the pictures. The first snap shows a dish layered with dry spaghetti, strips of uncooked bacon and slices of American cheese. Unsurprisingly, the meal only looked worse after some time in the oven. Instead of melting, the cheese shrivelled up and burned, and the dry spaghetti didn't look any more enticing either. After sharing the snaps in the popular Facebook group people were so shocked by the food creation they thought the foodie must've been joking. "This has got to be satire," one person commented on the viral post. But others weren't so sure, as a second said: "What in the name of god did you think you were making!?!" And a third chimed in: "I have never seen anything like this, where is the sauce?" The Sun tries Wetherspoons' new menu "I want to laugh but I genuinely don't even know what to think here," another wrote. Meanwhile, others offered some cooking suggestions for their next attempt. "You should start by reading an actual recipe, this is a crime," one said. And another commented: "I dread to think how many Italians you killed making this. Even if it is a joke this post should come with a trigger warning." And someone else quipped: "Who raised you?!" This isn't the first time food fans have been left stunned by a meal. Mum and TikToker Michelle previously caused viewers to lose their appetites as she proudly showed the breakfast she fed her family. The now-viral video, which has racked up a staggering 2.2million views in just two days, sees the parent make scrambled eggs - but with a twist. The nation's most peculiar food combinations revealed Brits reveal unusual food combinations that are so wrong, they feel right Research by LNER claims that a whopping four in five Brits experiment with unusual flavours, and almost a quarter have a 'guilty pleasure' when it comes to unconventional food combinations, Crisps and chocolate Cheese and chocolate Crisps in jam sandwich Chips and milkshake Cheese and bananas Apples with salt and pepper Avocado and chocolate Popcorn and hot sauce Tuna and marmite Gherkins and peanut butter Rather than using actual eggs, the mum whipped up the first meal of the day with a ''scrambled egg mix'' - which was essentially just a powder. To add some extra boost of protein, Michelle also threw in a generous amount of bacon - that had been freeze dried. The gut-churning concoction called for half a cup of the scrambled egg mix which she dissolved with warm water, as well as the bacon bits - which needed to be re-hydrated with cold water. For extra flavour and texture the mum also chucked in some freeze fried cheddar cheese that had to go in the water before as well. Once the egg mixture was ready, Michelle cooked it on the pan, before squeezing the water out of the shredded cheese and throwing a spoonful of the watery bacon. Showing off the final result on her page, the mum tried to convince the viewers it was ''good'' - and the rest of the brood agreed, with the dad dubbing the dish ''yummy''.

Heidi Klum, 51, hasn't aged a day since Victoria's Secret days

Supermodel and TV star Heidi Klum, 51, looked incredible as she donned a monochrome two-piece bikini while soaking up the sun in Los Angeles in a rare snap Supermodel Heidi Klum looked sensational as she cooled off from the Los Angeles sun in a monochrome bikini. The 51-year-old TV star surprised her fans with a bold photo taken by the pool. She basked in the sun with her long blonde locks draped across her face. Heidi threw out her arms and flashed a smile as she took in her stunning surroundings while wearing a white and black two-piece bikini. ‌ The German-American model looked just like her days as a Victoria's Secret Angel, and her fans agreed as they flooded her post with likes. Heidi simply commented: "86 *F Los Angeles," as she enjoyed soaking up the warm weather. ‌ She shot to fame in the 1990s as a model and became Germany's first Victoria's Secret Angel. Heidi has had a successful TV career and has been a judge on America's Got Talent. Away from the spotlight, Heidi is a mum-of-four and is now married to Tom Kaulitz. Last year, Heidi opened up on her beliefs as she revealed she had lived past lives. ‌ It has meant Heidi has become a "hoarder" as she can't resist buying objects she feels could have been hers before. "I love flea markets and I'm always looking for things that belonged to me in the past," she told The Times. "They talk to me. At work, I'm very correct, straightforward and organised, but I'm super-messy at home. I'm a hoarder, so that's a slight problem." Heidi said she sometimes sees objects that feel like they used to be hers and wants them. She admitted her home has become "like a museum over the years". Heidi is also fascinated by fortune telling and believes she is living out a prediction that was made when she was a teenager. ‌ When she was 16, the model was told that "millions of people will listen to what you have to say." Heidi confessed she hadn't even thought of being a model back then or hosting her famous Halloween parties. Heidi also opened up on ageing ahead of her 50th birthday two years ago. She told Entertainment Tonight: "To be honest, I don't let this number change my path or what I do. It is, for me, just a number, you know?' "Because I don't feel 50, internally. I mean, sometimes I look in the mirror and I'm like 'oh yeah, I am 50'. But internally, I feel like I'm 25." ‌ She added: "I'm full of energy. My husband is 33 and I know I have more energy than him!" Heidi once shared that her fitness and diet regime has been the key to her youthful looks. The model told Body and Soul: "I try to eat super healthy. We eat at like 6 to 6:30pm, [and having] home-cooked food, knowing what you're eating is super important. "I love healthy food; I don't really eat much junk. I like to be fit and I like to feel fit. I know that when I gained a little bit [of weight]... I felt sluggish. I was like, 'No, I have to get back into shape'."
