MOT probes claim by bus driver of malfunction brake system
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said this followed an allegation by the bus driver that the vehicle had a brake problem.
He said this could be determined through mechanical tests carried out on the vehicle's brake system.
'A detailed investigation is being conducted. We cannot just accept what the driver said on the surface. The technical report may be ready in a day or two and we will be able to prove it,' he said when met after visiting the site of the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway (JRTB) here today
Loke said besides conducting a thorough investigation into the driver and road factors, the ministry will work together with the Ministry of Works (KKR) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) to carry out several studies, including night driving simulations, aimed at proposing improvements to the JRTB.
'The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. Whether it is because of the road condition or the driver, we are investigating,' he said.
Earlier, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who also visited the site of the crash, said that the ministry is preparing a report on the Pavement Condition Assessment (PCA) which aims to facilitate maintenance and paving work on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB).

California challenges Trump's military deployment in LA protests
THE U.S. government's unprecedented use of National Guard troops in Los Angeles to protect officers carrying out President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown was illegal and should be ended, a lawyer for the state of California told a federal judge on Tuesday. The lawyer said evidence presented from the landmark trial that began on Monday showed that soldiers had violated a 19th century law that bars the military from civilian law enforcement. 'The government wanted a show of military force so great that any opposition to their agenda was silenced,' said the lawyer, Meghan Strong of the California Attorney General's Office. Justice Department attorney Eric Hamilton countered that there was 'substantial violence' in Los Angeles meriting military intervention and that the troops were only there to protect federal agents and property. Trump ordered 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles in June in response to days of unrest and protests sparked by mass immigration raids. California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, opposed the move and sued, alleging it violated prohibitions on the use of the military in law enforcement. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco will determine whether the government violated the Posse Comitatus Act (PCA). Breyer will also hear arguments on Wednesday on Newsom's legal right to bring the case. The judge has not said when he will rule. The trial comes as Trump said he was taking the extraordinary step of deploying the National Guard to fight crime in Washington and suggested he might take similar actions in other American cities. In the California trial, the administration sought to prove that the military was only used to protect federal personnel or federal property, which the administration said are permissible exceptions to the PCA. California, meanwhile, sought to convince Breyer that troops crossed the line by setting up roadblocks, diverting traffic and making arrests, which Strong described as prohibited policing actions. Government witnesses testified that although those actions are generally prohibited, there are exceptions when federal agents or property are in danger. Breyer appeared skeptical at times of the government's assertion that Trump had sole discretion to decide when troops were needed. The president said in June the protests amounted to a rebellion against federal authority. 'Is it a 'rebellion' because the president says it is a 'rebellion'?' Breyer asked Hamilton during the government's closing argument. Many of the troops have been withdrawn from Los Angeles, but California Attorney General Rob Bonta said on Monday that 300 National Guard members are still going on immigration raids and restricting civilian movements in the state. DAP planning peaceful response to uproar over flag incident, says Loke
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP has hit out at attempts by certain parties to pressure the Attorney General's Chambers into prosecuting a Penang shop owner who mistakenly displayed the national flag incorrectly. Party secretary-general Anthony Loke said on Tuesday (Aug 12) that such actions amounted to political interference and bullying, particularly after threats to stage a protest outside the shop if no charges were filed. ALSO READ: Shopkeeper to be charged soon over upside-down flag He said the Attorney General should be allowed to decide freely without pressure. Loke added that the party would respond peacefully by sponsoring a giant Jalur Gemilang to be displayed at the shop this evening. DAP members will also distribute 831 national flags to promote unity ahead of Merdeka Day, he said. It was reported that the 59-year-old shopkeeper is expected to be charged soon. The protest planned for Monday (Aug 11) did not materialise as the shop remained closed and no protesters turned up.

Loke: Public support key to sustaining Bas.My bus service
ALOR STAR: The Transport Ministry is calling on the public to make full use of the stage bus service, introduced under the Stage Bus Service Transformation (SBST) programme, which is being rolled out in phases this year. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the government has allocated substantial funding to support this initiative, particularly in urban areas where the service is currently operating. "To convince the Finance Ministry to continue providing allocations to us, I need to show data and performance - that this service truly benefits the people. "If the public doesn't use this service despite the affordable fares and convenience offered, we will struggle to justify further funding for its expansion," Loke told reporters after launching the Kota Setar service today. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, who is also the co-chairman of the Kedah State Development Action Council and Kedah State Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Ab Ghani. Loke said that the federal government has allocated RM78.5 million over five years, or RM15.7 million annually, to operate 13 SBST routes in Kedah. The Kota Setar service, which began operations in stages on June 1, has recorded approximately 30,000 users monthly, with numbers expected to reach 40,000 by the end of this month. "We hope more people will use it. The cost to the government is fixed at RM15.7 million a year for Kedah, regardless of how many passengers use the service. "The more passengers we have, the lower the average cost per passenger, making the government's investment more worthwhile," the minister remarked. On a separate note, Loke addressed the recent fatal accident involving a bus in Kota Sarang Semut, saying the matter is under police investigation. The ministry will assist with technical investigations, but whether the driver was negligent or will face charges is up to the police to determine, he said. "Of course, all bus operators are required to adhere to strict safety regulations, including speed limits and mandatory driver training programmes," he added. – BERNAMA
