DAP planning peaceful response to uproar over flag incident, says Loke
Party secretary-general Anthony Loke said on Tuesday (Aug 12) that such actions amounted to political interference and bullying, particularly after threats to stage a protest outside the shop if no charges were filed.

He said the Attorney General should be allowed to decide freely without pressure.
Loke added that the party would respond peacefully by sponsoring a giant Jalur Gemilang to be displayed at the shop this evening.
DAP members will also distribute 831 national flags to promote unity ahead of Merdeka Day, he said.
It was reported that the 59-year-old shopkeeper is expected to be charged soon.

He was earlier arrested and investigated after a video of the flag being flown upside-down went viral and numerous police reports were lodged.
In a TikTok video, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for a protest outside the shop, urging potential participants to bring their own Jalur Gemilang and to 'teach' the shopkeeper how to fly the national flag properly.
The protest planned for Monday (Aug 11) did not materialise as the shop remained closed and no protesters turned up.

The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh previously said it planned to hold a 'class' for the Penang shop owner, but later cancelled it after a warning by the police. DAP then announced it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang for the shop and mobilise Penang party members to distribute 831 flags, should anyone attempt to stir trouble.

KEPALA BATAS: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has called for the cancellation of a rally scheduled in Bertam, Kepala Batas, Penang, to prevent potential clashes between opposing groups. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail emphasised the importance of public safety and community well-being. 'PDRM has taken note of the rally planned for Aug 14, 2025, in Bertam, Kepala Batas,' he said in a statement. Mohd Khalid confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the viral incident involving the Jalur Gemilang being hoisted upside down. A total of 38 police reports were filed nationwide, with 17 in Penang and 21 in other states.
