'Confident' Rangers 'fully focused' on 'getting the job done'

BBC News13-03-2025

Connor Barron says Rangers will approach their home tie with Fenerbache "with confidence" as Barry Ferguson's side look to reach the last eight of the Europa League and avoid a record fourth consecutive defeat at Ibrox. The Scottish Premiership side bring a sensational 3-1 advantage from Istanbul into the second leg tonight, but the midfielder insists no one in the squad believes the job is done."All the boys are buzzing," the 22-year-old said."It was a great result over in Turkey last week but we know it's not over. Everyone's fully focused on making sure the job's done."Interim manager Ferguson watched on with glee as his side dominated Jose Mourinho's side and handled the heat from a ferocious Fenerbache crowd. But Barron knows they need to be even better."We need to be better than what we were over there, Fenerbahce are a top side," he the Scotland under-21 international said. "We respect them and we've got to make sure that we're on the ball tomorrow."We've got to go on and meet every game head on. We're at a big club, these are big matches, every game's a big match."We've got to go out and apply ourselves properly and make sure that we do all we can to get through the tie."We go out there with confidence and look to get through to the next round. "That's all our team's focused on. Every single one of us are focused on getting through to the next round and that's the only thing that we need to care about."For much of the season, Rangers' European exploits have been the only bright lights in an otherwise dull campaign. They are looking to avoid avoid an unprecedented fourth home defeat in a row after defeats to Queen's Park, St Mirren and Motherwell. Barron said it would be a "massive achievement" to make the last eight."We want to go as far as we can in the competition," he added."It would be a massive achievement to make the quarter-finals."There's been a couple of knocks and bumps on the road but it's about how you overcome them and how you look in the future now. "We've got to take every game as it comes and make sure that we win every game we play in, including tonight."

He might not be out the game for long though. Reports claim the former Gers number two is closing in on the Westerlo job. David Van der Broeck, a Belgian journalist claims he is favourite to succeed current boss Timmy Simons. He said on X, in response to Rangers' statement: "He is free to sign for Westerlo, where he is the favourite to succeed Timmy Simons as head coach." Charai left Rangers full of thanks for the club. He told the club's official website: 'As I leave Rangers, I want to thank everyone at the club for their support during my time here. 'This is a really special club, and as it enters a new era, I want to wish everyone associated with the club the very best for what comes next. 'Above all, I want to thank the Rangers supporters for their amazing backing across the period. We had some high moments and some low moments, but their support was the constant. It is something I will always remember and be forever grateful for.' Rangers CEO praised Charai as he moves on, saying: 'Through the managerial transition in February and beyond, he handled himself superbly and was a real asset to Barry and his staff during their period in charge of the team. Rangers fans react to news Russell Martin is their new manager 'As the men's first-team moves forth into this new era under Russell, it has been agreed between the club and Issame for him to move on." With Matt Gill joining Martin at Ibrox as his assistant coach, it left Charai without a place in the set up which inevitably lead to his departure from the Light Blues. Russell Martin has a busy summer ahead of him, preparing his Rangers squad for Champions League qualifiers. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Rico Bogen hoping momentum can lead to back-to-back T100 victories

Rico Bogen hopes the momentum from his first T100 World Triathlon Tour victory can carry him to the top of the podium again in Vancouver. Bogen claimed his maiden T100 victory with a dominant performance in San Francisco in May, lifting him to the top of the overall standings after two races. The German now hopes that having earned a first race win, he can repeat the feat on a new course for all athletes in Canada just two weeks after the San Francisco leg. 'I have the momentum on my side but it's a new day and a strong field,' he said. 'Let's see how the others are in the race and if I can perform like I did in San Francisco. 'It's hard to do it back-to-back, and it's such a strong field. I am in a good mood and want to have fun out there. 'It gave me confidence, now I know I can win a race like the T100 with such a strong field. You are always a little bit nervous for the race, but this gave me confidence that with a good training block I can beat everybody. 'It would be very cool to win back-to-back races, and it would be very good for the overall series.' A new leader in the Race to Qatar 🚀 June 3, 2025 The T100 arrives in Vancouver for the third stop of a world tour that will culminate in a final in Qatar in December. Bogen finished 10th on the first stop in Singapore before rocketing up the rankings with victory in San Francisco, but knows another good result is required in Vancouver ahead of the tour's European legs in France and the UK. The race in Vancouver is the first time the T100 has taken place in the Canadian city, and Bogen hopes his time reconnecting with nature can help him to another strong result. 'The course is very similar to San Francisco so we didn't change too much in training,' he said. We came straight from San Francisco, it's important to be able to fully reset and train. 'It's my first time here in Canada. Last week I travelled in a camper with my parents. We visited a bit of nature, it's beautiful. I love nature and I love a little bit more silence 'It's such a cool city. It's perfect conditions for triathlon. The bike course looks cool, a bit of technical stuff and a bit of hills.' Watch the world's top 20 female and top 20 male triathletes race live in the Vancouver T100 on Saturday 14 June. The broadcast starts at 0915 local time, 1715 in the UK, with the men's race starting at 0930 and then the women at 1200. You can tune in live for free globally on PTO+ or watch on partners channels such as TNT Sports in the UK, Max or Discovery+ in Europe, or beIN in North America. For more details visit

And their slim chances of making the last 16 have been rocked by several of their players not being able to travel to America due to their job requirements back home. Interim head coach Paul Posa said: "All of the players have other jobs alongside their football commitments. "However, they have an extraordinary dedication to their football outside of their working hours. "Indeed, some of the players were unable to take time to attend both the OFC Champions League competition and the Club World Cup." Auckland's squad is made up of forklift drivers, a fizzy drink salesman, real estate agents and a warehouse manager. Reflecting on Auckland's group of death, Posa added: "It's quite possibly the toughest group we could have drawn. "We have two traditional European powerhouses in Bayern Munich and Benfica and Boca Juniors, who are also capable of going all the way." Chelsea finally discover Club World Cup opponents as former star, 38, assists dramatic winner to set up reunion Posa would love nothing more than to repeat his success, but is a realist when it comes to his side's chances of doing so. "It's nice to dream we could be that competitive again," he said. "However, we're realistic about the challenge."
