BVB's Waldemar Anton played through injury in January, Sky reports
Life at Borussia Dortmund has been far from plain sailing for Anton, who signed from VfB Stuttgart for a fee of €22.5 million euros last summer.
Former head coach Nuri Sahin saw the 28-year-old as a key figurehead in the heart of his defence until thigh problems and flu ruled the Uzbek-born German out of action for periods of the season.
What was not known however, is that Anton battled through the 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the UEFA Champions League and the 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen with a torn muscle fiber.
The centre-half played through the pain barrier on both occasions so as to not let the club or teammates down.
Anton scored an unfortunate own-goal against his former employers Stuttgart in February. The German international has since been out-of-favour under new boss Niko Kovac.
Perhaps a return to the starting lineup awaits in the not too distant future given his duel winning ratio of 66.5% leads the way at BVB, and ranks only second to Niklas Sule (94.19%) in pass accuracy with 93.65%.

Born in France, Adli progressed through the Toulouse youth team, playing for the French side's second team between 2018 and 2020. Luis Diaz reveals Florian Wirtz talks before leaving Liverpool
Luis Diaz has revealed that he spoke to Florian Wirtz about his transfer to Bayern Munich, describing the move from Liverpool as a 'big gamble'. The Colombian winger joined Bundesliga champions this summer in a deal worth £65.5 million (€75m), just months after helping the Reds win the Premier League title. Diaz found the net on his Bayern debut this past weekend, scoring what was ultimately the winning goal against Stuttgart in the DFL-Supercup. 'I'm very happy and pleased with how this weekend went,' the 28-year-old told ESPN. 'As you pointed out, it was my first official match, my first goal, and my first title. I dreamed of coming here to achieve great things and give my best. I try to enjoy football. 'It was a big gamble and I'm very grateful to the management for reaching out to me and trusting me. It's always up to me to respond on the pitch and contribute with what I know how to do. To be at the disposal of the coaching staff. To start this way and be together with my teammates is incredible.' Read – Luis Diaz reveals Florian Wirtz talks before Liverpool exit Despite Liverpool's attempts to secure a contract extension for Diaz, the attacker eventually got his wish to join Bayern last month, but not before speaking to Wirtz about the demands of the German top flight. Wirtz joined the Merseyside outfit from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record £116m transfer fee including add-ons. 'I already had some knowledge of the Bundesliga,' Diaz said. 'I love watching football and all the competitions. I had the opportunity to talk to Florian in Liverpool, and I know it's a physical league. I hope to have a great debut. I've been here at the club for about two weeks, and I need time to settle in.' Diaz dedicated his goal against Stuttgart to former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who perished in a car accident last month alongside his younger brother, André Silva. 'It's brutal,' Diaz reflected. 'The fact that he's no longer with us and that we've lost an incredible teammate is unbelievable. No one is prepared to receive this kind of news and feel okay when faced with a situation like this. 'He was a great teammate to me. We will remember him fondly. He will live on in our memories, and being able to dedicate the goal to him is something special. I had planned to do so.'
