Williamson ready to put Arsenal friendship aside for Blackstenius and Sweden test

The Guardian15-07-2025
Leah Williamson has described Arsenal teammate Stina Blackstenius as an 'incredibly powerful footballer' as the pair prepare to go head-to-head in the Euro 2025 quarter-final between England and Sweden.
'She's a great player and she has been for many years now,' said the England captain. 'Her experience speaks for itself. We were celebrating her success at Arsenal, but not so much now. We'll see. Stina is an incredibly powerful footballer and very intelligent with her runs. She's a hard player to play against in that respect.'
The two players were on the same Arsenal side in May when Blackstenius scored the winner against Barcelona in the Champions League final. And trying to separate the friendship they have when they step on to the pitch in Zurich on Thursday can be challenging. 'It's different because playing each other in training comes with restrictions, it's rare that I get to play against Stina in this setting. I enjoy it, I like Stina,' Williamson said with a grin. 'It's tough to remove all of that to just go at it, you don't want to focus on it too much, there's lots of things that come into play when you play against a teammate, but I think I've known Stina long enough now that I know who she is and it's time to focus on us.'
As a centre-back, Williamson will be directly up against her club colleague, but she is wary of pinpointing Blackstenius's threat alone. 'When you have a team who work for each other like Sweden, then you don't need to necessarily have a crazy standout threat because everyone plays their roles,' she said. 'They are hard to prepare for in that sense. The discipline for them all to complete their jobs on the pitch makes them a dangerous side.'
Williamson's focus in this tournament is staying present, replicating her mantra of the 2022 Euros. 'I want to enjoy it and spend time with my teammates,' she said. 'It's a great environment and I love being around them all. Beth Mead was laughing at me the other day because I did the day in the life of her, which meant I didn't go back to my room and I was very sociable. By the end of the day I slept good.
'I said to her: 'I don't know how you do this every day,' and she said: 'This is my every day'. I said: 'Yes, it's crazy to me, I'm not that type of person'. But it's little things like that, just trying to be around more. In 2022 I slept most of the time that I wasn't on a pitch so yes, a bit different this time.'

There is also praise for Jill Scott's presence, with the influential character having retired after the 2022 Euros. 'We can't get rid of her,' joked Williamson. 'I've already had a couple of conversations this tournament with Jill, one-to-one. She's a funny character, but she can be serious and she has so many experiences of her own and an incredible perspective, she does actually help us out. When she retired we were begging for somebody to employ her within the FA just to bring her along. I'm glad that she is here and she's found a way to be here. It's only ever a positive thing for the team. She's one of the greatest teammates I've ever had.'

Scott Hanson reveals fate after ESPN's new billion-dollar deal to takeover RedZone sparks fan meltdown

Scott Hanson has confirmed he will be retained as host of NFL RedZone after ESPN's new billion-dollar deal acquired the show and sparked a fan meltdown that the iconic broadcaster may now longer be the property's presenter. Hanson confirmed the news, promising to continue to be the narrator for seven hours of live football every Sunday during the regular season. RedZone shows live highlights from every NFL game as they happen, allowing fans to not channel surf and see all the major plays from the gridiron in one medium. Although changes to the presentation may happen under the ESPN banner, losing Hanson was a step too far for some, with a massive sigh of relief coming from NFL fans. 'It's official. (& for those wondering: yes, I will still be hosting RedZone.) Fired up for a great season! Optimistic about this new partnership! (& I get to call @AdamSchefter 'colleague' for the 2nd time in my career… nice bonus!),' Hanson said on X. Schefter, the NFL's chief news-breaker, replied, 'My honor.' RedZone is moving to ESPN after the sports-programming network acquired the iconic show Still a little up in the air with the move to ESPN is whether RedZone will stay commercial free, which would be a first for the sports programming network. Hanson did not comment on that on his post, drawing the ire of some fans. RedZone was on its own channel for cable packages, allowing the need for no ads. 'If there's commercials I'm taking my talents to StreamEast,' one NFL fan said. 'I can already see you co hosting with Buzz Lightyear one week because Disney owns RedZone now,' a second football fan said. The first edition of RedZone under the NFL banner takes place in a little over a month, with beloved fans of Hanson and the format waiting for any word on if there will be changes after ESPN's monster deal. As part of the deal in acquiring the NFL Network, RedZone, and other properties, the NFL now owns a 10% stake in ESPN.

How AFL coach found out he was going to be sacked with five words in a phone call - before he took a sly shot at his club disguised as a joke

Sacked Melbourne Demons coach Simon Goodwin was at home on August 4 when his phone rang - and it wasn't good news. On the other end was Brad Green, the club's president. 'Mate, we need to talk,' Green reportedly said. And so began the premiership-winning mentor's immediate exit from the Demons. Green was then joined at Goodwin's house by head of football Alan Richardson, interim chief executive David Chippindall and board member Angela Williams. The quartet wanted to present a united front, and deliver the news to Goodwin personally. After delivering a historic flag in 2021, Goodwin deserved that. Given the Demons currently sit in 12th spot, the coach, 48, was somewhat blindsided by the decision. Other clubs are in far worse positions, namely West Coast, Richmond and North Melbourne. But Goodwin - who also won premierships as a player with the Adelaide Crows in 1997 and 1998 - knows the AFL is a results business. Another season where Melbourne won't play finals footy was deemed unacceptable by club management, so Goodwin was moved on. Polarising commentator Kane Cornes felt the playing group - and Goodwin - haven't evolved and the decision was inevitable. 'If you're looking at all the important factors, the way they play has been the issue for years,' he said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters this week. 'They are stuck in 2015 with their game styles, contest and defence, he (Goodwin) hasn't been able to improve that. He hasn't had a game style that stacks up in 2025. 'He hasn't been able to solve that. The (club) culture is (also) a mess, the senior players appear to do whatever they want.' Goodwin fronted the media on Tuesday at the MCG - and the departing coach couldn't resist firing off a bullet disguised as humour. 'I'm going to miss the players first and foremost,' he said. 'I have some amazing relationships with some blokes I've coached for an incredibly long what I won't miss is driving down to Casey.' It was a reference to the senior playing group often commuting to Casey Fields in Cranbourne - more than 50km from the CBD - for training sessions. Goodwin - who has already been linked to a move to Sydney next season - will receive a reported payout of $1.2million from the Demons, as he was contracted until 2026. Assistant Melbourne coach Troy Chaplin will step in as caretaker coach for the remainder of this season ahead of fixtures against the Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Collingwood.

Why 'sparky' Benjamin Sesko has long been touted to reach the top of the game... but Erling Haaland comparisons are misplaced despite their similar journeys

As someone who can execute a slam dunk as easily as a close-range header, it is no surprise Benjamin Sesko has always reached for the stars. A talented basketball player who idolises fellow Slovenian and NBA star Luka Doncic, the 6ft 5ins Sesko set his sights on taking Erling Haaland 's No 9 shirt from the moment he joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2019. Next season, Sesko may be trying to beat the forward to the golden boot.
