Burnley Darts prodigy beats Luke Littler's record
A budding 14-year-old darts player has been tipped for the top after beating World Champion Luke Littler's record by becoming the youngest ever winner of a World Darts Federation (WDF) event. Kaya Baysal, from Burnley, who has been playing for seriously for less than 18 months, lifted the 2025 Budapest Classic Men's at the weekend. The WDF said he was 13 days younger than Littler was when he secured the 2021 Irish Open win. Kaya's coach and manager Keith Brunt said there was nothing stopping him from following in the footsteps of Littler, who became the youngest World Darts Champion in January at the age of 18.
"He has a lot of work to do but who knows," said Mr Brunt.Kaya beat the reigning Budapest Classic champion, 27-year-old Belgian Sybren Gijbels, 5-2 in the final, after overcoming former professional tour player Krzysztof Kciuk 4-1 in the semi-final.He also won two youth titles in Budapest - the Youth Open and the Youth Masters - and got to the semi-finals in the pairs event with his friend and fellow Blackburn Darts Academy player Joseph Westby, 15.
The teenager, whose favourite player is Joe Cullen, has played down making history and his haul of trophies, and said he was back on the practice board. Kaya said: "It was a great experience. I played some good darts against some good players."But the Burnley FC fan added: "I've lots more hard work to do."The WDF secretary-general Nick Rolls said everyone was "blown away" by Kaya's performance in Hungary."He's making rapid progress and his performances in Budapest proved that if you're good enough, you're old enough."He added: "Two of our previous youngest-ever winners were Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler, so Kaya is in excellent company."The youngster is sponsored by Target Darts, which backs some of the world's top players, including Littler.Mr Brunt, 41, who set up the academy in 2017 and manages 14 players, said he believed this was the first of many big titles for Kaya."He's calm and never fazed by who he is playing, has got his head screwed on, and has very supportive parents."
His parents Engin and Samantha Baysal said they were "so proud" of him."He's very chilled about it, and he's just keen to push on," said Mrs Baysal, adding it was Kaya's uncle who got him into darts. She said his walk-on song is a song - Foo Fighters Times Like These - was very special to him as it was his late uncle's favourite song, and a Turf Moor favourite.

A second player has been banned, while a third avoided punishment ACE BANNED Former Man Utd and Chelsea star Nemanja Matic slapped with football ban after taping over LGBTQ+ logo NEMANJA MATIC has received a ban after he covered an LGBTQ+ campaign logo on his kit with tape. The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder, who now plays for Ligue 1 club Lyon, covered up the logo on his sleeve for the final game of the season. 4 Nemanja Matic has been banned for two games for covering an LGBTQ+ campaign logo on his sleeve with tape Credit: AFP 4 The Ligue 1 rainbow logo was part of an anti-homophobia campaign Credit: Getty Matic, 36, used tape to cover a rainbow coloured Ligue 1 logo on his Lyon shirt for their final day victory over Angers. The logo was part of Ligue 1's annual campaign against homophobia which sees every club shirt adorned with the rainbow design. Matic wasn't the only player to cover the logo, with Le Havre forward Ahmed Hassan also covering the sleeve design with tape. According to Belgian news outlet HLN, both Matic and Hassan have been handed two-match bans by the French Football Federation as a result of their actions. The pair will also reportedly have to undergo an awareness campaign about homophobia in football. Matic is believed to be a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Hassan is Muslim. A third player, Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed, has escaped punishment after refusing to play with the logo. Mohamed, who is also a practicing Muslim, chose not to play in the final match of the season rather than covering the logo up. 4 Le Havre forward Ahmed Hassan (right) also covered up the logo Credit: Getty 4 Mostafa Mohamed chose not to play with the logo on his sleeve Credit: AFP Mohamed cited his 'values' for not playing in Nantes 3-0 win over Montpellier. He wrote on social media: "Living together also means recognising that this diversity can be expressed differently from one person to another. Nemanja Matic brands Andre Onana 'one of worst keepers in Man Utd HISTORY' in savage response to goalie "I believe in mutual respect - the respect we owe others, but also the respect we owe ourselves and our beliefs. "As for me, there are deep-rooted values tied to my heritage and my faith, which make participating in this initiative difficult." The actions of the Matic, Hassan and Mohamed prompted France's sports minister Marie Basacq to issue a statement after the final day of the Ligue 1 campaign. Barsacq said: "Football has a massive platform, and the [French Football] Federation is determined to put this issue on the clubs' and supporters' agenda. 'Homophobic insults and behaviour are no longer acceptable. "Society has evolved, and the language in football must change with it. There's a full range of sanctions available, and they must be applied.' Although rare, some players have spoken out in support of the LGBTQ+ community in the past. Speaking six years ago, Atletico Madrid and French international Antoine Griezmann said: "If a gay player wants to come out, he might not have all the France players with him, but he will have me.'

Philippe Clement names what was 'lacking' at Rangers
Gers finally have a permanent successor to the Belgian after Barry Ferguson stepped in during their hour of need after his sacking. Martin is the man they've gone for over Davide Ancelotti and the former Southampton boss was introduced as the new head coach this morning. Clement has been linked with other jobs - such as Anderlecht and Sparta Prague - since leaving Ibrox but remains out of work for now. But he has been able to reflect on his time in Glasgow and assess what the club needs going forward now they have their new man in place. Read more: Stability is the key word for him after such an up-and-down time of it during his spell and even before. Speaking to BBC Scotland, he said: "A lot of things have changed in the club the last few years, over and over again. "The main thing that's necessary at the club is that the club has stability to work in a good way with the players, with the staff, to have a consistent story. "I think that's the big part in the club that has been lacking for years already. "I hope the new owners can bring that for the club, for the manager and the players."

Russell Martin fired Rangers warning by Philippe Clement as axed boss tells his successor what is essential at Ibrox
The former Ibrox boss has spoken about his successor's changes of hitting the ground running at Ibrox Philippe Clement has warned Russell Martin about the lack of stability that has plagued Rangers in recent years. However, he hopes that the new hierarchy at Ibrox can give the Englishman the tools to create his own 'consistent story'. Former Southampton and Swansea boss Martin was officially unveiled as Clement's permanent successor as Gers head coach on Thursday after ex club captain Barry Ferguson has stepped up to the role on an interim basis until the end of the season following Clement's dismissal back in February. Martin's appointment came less than a week after the 49ers Enterprises - spearheaded by new Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh - completed their takeover at Ibrox. Their arrival has also seen further change at boardroom level, with Kevin Thelwell and Dan Purdy both joining the club from Everton as sporting director and technical director respectively after Nils Koppen stood down from his role as the latter. Despite leading the Light Blues to the Premier Sports Cup just two months after his arrival in December 2023, Clement was relieved of his duties earlier this year after just 16 months in the dugout. But the Belgian hopes that the wholesale changes upstairs will give the new man Martin the stability to go out and get the team firing. He told BBC Sport Scotland: "I don't know because a lot of things have changed in the club. "So, a lot of things have changed in the club this last year or the last few years. A lot of things changed over and over again. So I hope because the main thing that's necessary is that the club have stability to work in a good way with the players, with the staff and with everybody in the club to have a consistent story. "I think that's the big part that the club has been lacking for years already. "I hope that the new owners can bring that for the club, for the manager and also for the players."
