U.S. Coast Guard and Escambia County first responders conduct mass rescue operation exercise
Avelo Airlines resumes non-stop flights from Destin-Fort Walton airport to southern Connecticut
'Think a lot of people in the water at once. How do we all coordinate and get on scene and get as many people out of the water as we can as quickly as possible,' Lt. Cmdr. Mike Francis, Search and Rescue Mission coordinator at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile said.
Local first responders and the United States Coast Guard worked together to recover victims and get them the care they may need.
'The ability for us to multiply our force on the water is critical. Especially in a situation where you've got you know ten people in the water, 20 people in the water,' Francis said.
While Thursday it was mannequins rescued from the water, it's a scenario that could become real at any moment.
'When you come out here on a weekend and you see the number of boats that are in the water, you just know that it's not a matter of if it's just a matter of when and being able to have these drills and work with these other agencies that just allows us to work better,' Steve Boothe, battalion chief for Escambia County Fire Rescue said.
As first responders train to respond as quickly and effectively as possible, there's a few things boaters can do to prepare for an emergency too.

'Please wear a life jacket. Please have a PLB or an EPIRB if you can. Please utilize a kill switch if you're alone and have a way to talk to us,' Francis said.

Hearts Melt Over How One Pup Brought Into Litter Is 'Not Like the Others'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The internet has fallen head over paws for a puppy who looks a bit different from the rest of the litter. Jen Francis of Eagleridge Goldens in Florida told Newsweek via email that one of her dogs had a singleton pup. This means a litter of only one puppy. While a one-pup litter is not inherently bad, it does present its fair share of challenges. The mothers of a singleton pup may either overproduce milk or under-lactate, an article from Revival Animal Health said. Plus, the single puppy will not have the support of littermates during nursing, which causes them to use extra energy to latch and stay warm. These pups might also experience behavioral issues, including the risk of being spoiled and poor socialization. Knowing these possibilities, Francis always incorporates the single puppy into another litter. She recently did this with a singleton named Winston. And while Winston joined another litter of golden retrievers, Francis noticed he was "not like the others" despite being the same dog breed. Winston's much larger and chunkier head was impossible to miss, earning himself the nickname of "Chooch." Thankfully, Winston didn't seem to mind his bigger size. He threw himself right into the mix. He loved being surrounded by all the other puppies. Francis said Winston joined the other litter when they were about 4 weeks old, right around the time they started eating mush and began weaning off their mother. "We never leave the pups alone so whenever we took mama out, we would put him in with them," she said. She added that it is easy to introduce a singleton pup to another litter. Because of their young age, they adapt quickly. They all play, eat and nap together. Winston wasted no time in getting to know his step-siblings, joining the "puppy puddle" snuggle session. As of Friday, the Instagram video reached over 1.5 million views, as people obsessed over Winston. "Ohhh I am dyyying !! He's the most adorable fluffy potato chonk," commented one viewer. Another added: "They're so darn cute!" But despite the size difference now, Francis shared in the caption that all these golden retrievers will be about the same size as adults: Males reach about 65 to 75 pounds, while females are a bit smaller at 55 to 65 pounds. Mobile to bid ‘iconic' ship farewell
OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — The SS United States Conservancy is in the early design phase of a land-based museum to display artifacts and showcase the history of the SS United States. Mobile business employee injured while trying to stop alleged shoplifter The museum's exact location has not yet been decided, though renderings have begun based on dimensions of potential property in partnership with Okaloosa County. Early rendering of the potential museum in Okaloosa County with ship parts of the SS United States. (Courtesy of SS United States Conservancy) Warren Jones with the Conservancy Board of Directors said a meeting will take place this week with top donors to push forward the presented designs. 'The county has, again, partnered with us so we'll help out with the search for property and bounce around some ideas on that as well, and then they're involved in the transport of funnels to a temporary location,' Jones said. 'We've looked at the exhibits, and we've kind of mapped out what we would exhibit in the museum. There are thousands and thousands of artifacts for this museum, and they are all over the East Coast.' Having launched 74 years ago, the SS United States holds the transatlantic speed records during her maiden voyage and has carried over 1 million passengers during her time on the water before being docked in 1996. 'The record's never been broken, both eastbound and westbound, never been broken,' Jones added. 'It will never be matched, and so it's really that, you know, we, the SS United States Conservancy, have tried since 2011 to have this ship repurposed as a multi-purpose stationary ship, hotel rooms, event spaces, eateries, as such.' Mobile apartment complex overrun with trash and critters
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) —Garbage piling up, safety hazards, and wildlife roaming the grounds have all become commonplace, a tenant from the Crossings at Pinebrook says. Residents wake up to find Jubilee in Fairhope Residents say their complaints have been ignored, but News 5 was able to get some answers. Management blames the problem on a broken trash compactor and says they are working to resolve the problem. One resident who did not want her name or face shown said the trash problem is out of control. 'Mattresses, tires, like bags of like, seafood boils everywhere. So it smells, it smells bad, but think about it. It's so hot, and then you've got trash down in the sun,' she said. She said the garbage is also attracting some unwanted visitors around the apartment. 'We've had vultures, raccoons, possums. People think I'm joking, I say, no, no. They literally fly over the trash. This isn't a zoo,' she explained. While the area by the trash compactor has the largest amount of garbage, this resident said it's not her only concern, as there are a number of other trash bags, littered items, and food scattered throughout the complex. 'You see how filthy this is? I hate to say it, but this is a good day for this apartment,' she said. The garbage isn't the only complaint she's had that's gone unaddressed by the apartment. There's a number of safety issues including downed stop signs, huge potholes, and exposed wires throughout the complex. 'There's supposed to be a stop sign right there. And this is a safety issue because, again, not just kids, but people walk through here all the time,' she continued. Residents say they just want basic upkeep before conditions get any worse. Foshee Residential is the management company for the Crossings at Pinebrook. A spokesperson shared a message with us that was sent to residents today. 'We understand that the recent issues with the trash collection have been frustrating for everyone, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused,' the statement read.
