SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — The Santa Rosa County Economic Development Office is hosting the 2025 Military Base Update this week. The release said mission updates from NAS Pensacola, NAS Whiting Field, Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base will be presented. Lawmakers responsible for military policies and appropriations will also participate including Texas U.S. Representatives John Carter and Tony Gonzales, according to the release. According to an NAS Pensacola news release, the event will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. The Several Veterans Services Organizations Auxiliaries and Military Units will be in attendance. PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — A Naval Air Station Pensacola service member has been arrested for domestic violence-battery, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office. Elberta man sentenced for killing 4 people while driving under the influence 50-year-old Lt. Cmdr. Michael Smith was booked into the Santa Rosa County Jail after 4:30 p.m. Thursday. As of Friday morning, Smith is still in jail. In a statement from NAS Pensacola, officials said the investigation into Smith is ongoing. (WKRG) — Preparing for the worst — a mass rescue operation exercise was conducted on board NAS Pensacola Thursday, simulating a crash between a charter boat and a ferry in the Pensacola Pass. Avelo Airlines resumes non-stop flights from Destin-Fort Walton airport to southern Connecticut 'Think a lot of people in the water at once. How do we all coordinate and get on scene and get as many people out of the water as we can as quickly as possible,' Lt. Cmdr. Mike Francis, Search and Rescue Mission coordinator at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile said. Local first responders and the United States Coast Guard worked together to recover victims and get them the care they may need. 'The ability for us to multiply our force on the water is critical. Especially in a situation where you've got you know ten people in the water, 20 people in the water,' Francis said. While Thursday it was mannequins rescued from the water, it's a scenario that could become real at any moment. 'When you come out here on a weekend and you see the number of boats that are in the water, you just know that it's not a matter of if it's just a matter of when and being able to have these drills and work with these other agencies that just allows us to work better,' Steve Boothe, battalion chief for Escambia County Fire Rescue said. As first responders train to respond as quickly and effectively as possible, there's a few things boaters can do to prepare for an emergency too. BAKER, Fla. – The Miss Florida Teen USA organization has officially retired the title of Miss Okaloosa County Teen USA — permanently awarding it to Kadance Fredericksen in her memory. UPDATE: NAS Pensacola lifts lockdown after reports of shots fired onboard Corry Station The announcement was made by Jaclyn Nesheiwat Stapp, director of Miss Florida Teen USA, in honor of Fredericksen's lasting impact on the pageant community. 'From this moment on, Kadance will always be the FOREVER Miss Okaloosa County Teen USA,' Lisa Fredericksen, Kadance's mother, shared in a statement. 'There are no words to fully express what this means to us.' Kadance, 18, died in a car crash on Feb. 17. She had been involved in pageantry for years and used her platform to support charitable causes, including founding 'Kada's Promise,' a nonprofit that donated more than 15,000 teddy bears to children in crisis. Her family said the title retirement is a meaningful tribute to her legacy. Wild black bear hunting may become legal soon in Florida 'It feels amazing. In one aspect, it's hard to believe that my daughter at 18 could have had such an impact. But at the same time, it doesn't surprise me. That's just who she was,' said her father, Matt Fredericksen. Kadance's family said future pageant contestants will now represent their city rather than Okaloosa County. 'She was more than a titleholder. She was a light in this world, and she will always be remembered that way,' Lisa Fredericksen said. Kadance had been accepted to Mississippi State University and Auburn University, where she planned to study veterinary medicine. She was also a National Honor Society member and recipient of the Ellison McCraney Ingram Foundation Scholarship. Miss Florida Teen USA officials said the title retirement is a permanent decision, ensuring that Kadance's name will always be part of the pageant's history. Travis Lofton sentenced after killing Daphne restaurant manager 'We are grateful to everyone who continues to love and remember Kadance,' her mother said.
