Fencers urge FIE to reinstate checks on ‘neutral' Russian, Belarusian athletes

More than 440 fencers from 40 countries have signed an open letter urging the International Fencing Federation (FIE) to reinstate rigorous background checks on Russian and Belarusian athletes competing under neutral status.
The letter, released by the Global Athlete movement on Thursday, followed the FIE's decision to list Russian and Belarusian fencers as 'neutrals' for the World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, which run from July 22 to 26.
The move has sparked criticism. Ukraine's Fencing Federation said it was considering unspecified legal action over the inclusion of athletes with Russian military ranks. Russia's war in Ukraine has lasted more than three years, after it invaded its neighbour in 2022.
Elite fencers expressed their 'deep concern and disagreement' with the FIE's move to replace broader checks with a declaration of peace and neutrality.
'By removing comprehensive background checks, the FIE risks allowing individuals whose affiliations or actions conflict with the values of neutrality and non-violence to compete under a neutral status,' the letter read.

'The FIE's decision contradicts the core principles of fencing – respect, integrity, and fair play – and deviates from the approach originally taken by the international sporting community.'

Trump in Scotland for golf and trade talks amid hopes of EU deal

US President Donald Trump, dogged by questions about his ties to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, arrived in Scotland on Friday for some golf and bilateral talks that could yield a trade deal with the European Union. Trump told reporters upon his arrival that he will visit his two golf properties in Scotland and meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, whom he called a 'highly respected woman.' As hundreds of onlookers cheered his arrival, Trump repeated his earlier comment about a 50-50 chance of securing a deal with the EU, adding it would be his administration's biggest trade agreement thus far, if it came together. However, he said there were still 'sticking points' with Brussels on 'maybe 20 different things'. Trump said his meeting with Starmer would be more of a celebration of the trade deal already reached than continued work on it, adding: 'It's a great deal for both.' Before he left Washington, Trump said his administration was working hard on a possible trade deal with the EU, and Brussels was keen to make a deal. Von der Leyen said later she would meet Trump in Scotland on Sunday.

Ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn launches ‘Your Party' to shake up UK politics

Former leftist Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced on Thursday he was forming a new political party alongside another ex-member of Britain's ruling party, as UK politics continues to splinter. Corbyn, who lost two elections as Labour leader in 2017 and 2019, and fellow independent MP Zarah Sultana said the new left-wing outfit would be called 'Your Party'. 'It's time for a new kind of political party. One that is rooted in our communities, trade unions and social movements,' they said in a joint statement. In their announcement, they called for a 'mass redistribution of wealth and power' and said they would 'keep demanding an end to all arms sales to Israel'. They also committed to a 'free and independent Palestine'. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has pulled Labour to the centre since succeeding Corbyn as leader, faces growing calls within his party to recognise a Palestinian state. Corbyn, 76, stepped down as Labour leader after overseeing its worst result in decades, when it was trounced in the 2019 general election by the Conservatives, then led by Boris Johnson.
