Man Who Burned His Sleeping Daughter In Desert 26 Years Ago Dies In Prison

NDTV05-06-2025
An Arizona man, who admitted to setting his two-year-old daughter on fire with gasoline in 1999, has died in jail. Shawn Ryan Grell, 50, was serving a life sentence until he died on April 19 at ASPC-Tucson facility.
On April 19, authorities found the body of the convicted killer in the prison complex, but they withheld information concerning his cause of death, The New York Post reported.
In December 1999, Grell picked up his daughter Kristen Salem from daycare with the intention of taking her to see the Christmas lights, per the East Valley Tribune.
Instead, they headed to a department shop in Mesa, where Grell bought gasoline and a plastic gas can. He then reportedly drove to an isolated desert region in east Mesa, where he laid his daughter down and set her on fire.
Kristen woke up, staggered 10 feet through the flames, then fell to the ground, and died, as per reports.
Having murdered his daughter, Grell proceeded to a local convenience store to purchase alcohol. He further informed the shopkeeper that he had witnessed some youngsters burning a dog in an empty lot.
Grell later contacted the police and turned himself in. At a press conference early the next morning, he subsequently admitted to the murder.
"I took the gasoline and I poured it on her. I took the match and threw it on her," he admitted in a recorded interview to investigators.
Grell was given the death penalty in 2001 after being found guilty of first-degree murder and burglary. The court ruled the senseless killing was carried out in an "especially heinous, cruel, and depraved manner."
That was reversed in 2013 when the Arizona Supreme Court unanimously decided that his death sentence was "cruel and unusual punishment."
The court declared that Grell had mental retardation, and his death sentence was revoked. He received a life sentence in prison until he died in prison in April.

Florida Man Earns Rs 87,000 Reward After Capturing 87 Pythons In A Month

A Florida man bagged 87 invasive Burmese pythons in a month and earned a $1,000 (approx Rs 87,000) reward through the state incentive system. Aaron Mann won the monthly prize money as part of the South Florida Water Management District's (SFWMD) Python Elimination Program, reported The New York Post. The program encourages knowledgeable Sunshine State citizens to catch and kill as many of the state's invasive Burmese pythons as possible. The incentives include by-the-foot compensation and monthly prizes for the highest catch count. Mann won the reward for July. The annual Florida Python Challenge attracted a large number of participants last year. However, they managed to kill only 200 of the reptiles throughout the 10-day hunt. The winner of the challenge last year took home a $10,000 (Rs 8.7 lakh) incentive after removing 20 pythons, which is a small portion of Mann's total. In addition to the winner, specialised python removal workers are also compensated $50 (Rs 4,400) for each snake they capture. They get an additional $25 (Rs 2,200) for each foot for snakes longer than the typical 4 feet. According to SFWMD, the Python Elimination Program aims to reduce the invasive python population, which poses a significant threat to the ecosystem by preying on native birds, mammals, and reptiles. The reptiles can measure as long as 18 feet in length and are capable of swallowing an entire deer whole. They also have no natural predators to keep their numbers in check. The program is part of the state's efforts to control the snake population in the Everglades, which has grown significantly since the 1990s. While the officials aren't sure what the precise count is, the state continues to implement new measures, including a tracking program using "cartoonish robot rabbits" to detect pythons and dispatch removal agents. Once a python is detected through the tracking system, officials send a removal agent to capture and eliminate the snake, who would then receive compensation for their efforts. Roughly 19,000 pythons have been removed from the Everglades since 2000, reported Fox Weather Service.

Pakistani social media influencer defends husband who threatened to rape air hostess

The wife of Salman Iftikhar, the executive recently sentenced for threatening a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant, has come forward to defend her husband, attributing his actions to mental health struggles. Abeer Iftikhar, social media influencer from Pakistan.(Instagram-abeeriftekhar) Abeer Rizvi, a social media influencer based in Pakistan, shared her thoughts on Instagram days after Iftikhar was sentenced to 15 months in prison for his behaviour during a flight in 2023. 'Mental health is not a joke. Behind every story, there's pain you don't see,' Rizvi wrote on Instagram. 'Before judging, try understanding. Be kind. Be human,' she added. Iftikhar, the founder of recruitment firm Staffing Match, was travelling from London to Lahore with his wife and their three children when he became intoxicated and disruptive on February 7, 2023, reported The New York Post. During the flight's first meal service, Iftikhar allegedly drank champagne in front of his children and behaved in a disorderly manner, including reaching over the counter to take ice with his hands, which led cabin crew to ask him to return to his seat, the report added. When asked to comply, Iftikhar launched into a tirade against flight attendants, making racist and threatening remarks, and later identified the hotel where the lead flight attendant, Angie Walsh, was staying, issuing further threats. According to the Mirror, he said she 'will be dead,' and added, 'The floor of your hotel will be blown up and it will disappear. You will be dragged by your hair from your room and gang-raped and set on fire.' The report said that the officials managed to calm Iftikhar, and he was allowed to leave the flight in Pakistan without police involvement. Iftikhar was arrested at his home in England in March 2024. Following his arrest, his company, Staffing Match reportedly went bankrupt, owing $22.8 million. During his court hearing, Iftikhar admitted to making threats and racially harassing Walsh but denied harassment charges related to a physical altercation with a male flight attendant. Walsh testified that the incident left her traumatised and forced her to take 14 months off work. 'I am a strong, brave, happy stewardess, and loved my job,' she said in a victim impact statement. 'I have flown with Virgin Atlantic for 37 years and faced many challenges, but this incident broke me,' she added. Virgin Atlantic praised Walsh for her courage in speaking out. The New York Post quoted a spokesperson saying, 'The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority, and we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive or abusive behaviour on board. We support Angie fully and commend her bravery.' Salman Iftikhar's wife, Abeer Rizvi, has not publicly commented on his jail sentence.
