Struggling Red Bulls face big questions heading into key stretch
And the second-year coach wasn't looking to do that a day before the Red Bulls opened the Leagues Cup tournament against Chivas Guadalajara on Wednesday.

But the Red Bulls find themselves in a precarious situation after 25 league matches this season — on the wrong side of the playoff cutoff as they enter a compact part of their schedule and the stretch run of the MLS calendar.
Over their next five matches, the Red Bulls will participate in the Leagues Cup, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the MLS regular season — a stretch that will include three matches in one week — raising the question of where the team's priorities lie.
The Leagues Cup, an in-season tournament between teams in Mexico's Liga MX and MLS that was first introduced in 2019, and the U.S. Open Cup offer a path for the team to qualify for the prestigious Concacaf Champions Cup.

Meanwhile, the Red Bulls have not missed the MLS playoffs in the previous 15 seasons.
Nevertheless, if there was an organizational priority, Schwarz wasn't tipping his hand during a conversation with The Post.
'I would say it's not … more MLS or then Open Cup, or Leagues Cup, or something like that,' he said. 'For us, the priority is to bring our face on the field every day. That's the focus and that's, I think, actually, right now, so important in our situation. To see a chance in every game, to see opportunity in every game, for our confidence to believe in ourselves.'
Since the end of May, things have not been great for the Red Bulls, and a club that shocked the MLS world to reach the MLS Cup Final last winter has recorded just one win over the past two months and fallen back to 10th place, one spot out of the playoff picture, after an ugly 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire last weekend.

The Red Bulls have been without star Lewis Morgan, who has been out with a quad injury and isn't expected to return until late August, and Cameron Harper, who is dealing with a knee injury and is out indefinitely.
It has raised concerns about the depth the team has to withstand the injury issues as scoring has been limited, averaging 1.56 goals per match, and their defense has struggled, conceding 17 goals over their past eight matches.
Schwarz described it as 'unfair' to try and analyze the roster or the ongoing season when the topic was broached by The Post.

The results — or lack thereof — have left Red Bulls fans even more frustrated, with average attendance dipping from last season and supporters taking to social media, after the team seemingly had raised the bar with their playoff run last season and their first appearance in the league championship game in nearly two decades.
The coach understood that the success of last year brought higher expectations but defended the current group.
'That's normal. It's not the first time that I had this experience, to be honest,' Schwarz said about the expectations. 'But for this group right now, it's not fair and we have to do everything to try to give our best. That's clear. The guys are doing a great job, and we have to handle some situations. … But the expectations are good, but I think it has also every time to be realistic, that's important. Ambitious, we are very competitive and that's what I can say we are every day.'
Amid the slump for the Red Bulls and the start of the Leagues Cup, the MLS summer transfer window opened last week and the club has been linked to German striker Timo Werner, who has remained in ongoing negotiations with the Red Bulls about a possible jump to MLS after previously featuring for Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig.
During a pre-match press conference Wednesday, Schwarz said he and the front office have had conversations about bringing in players during the transfer window, but insisted that the change had to come from the group already with the team.
'This is our responsibility, what we have to change and we can change this with our behavior,' he said.

Lionel Messi Returns From Injury, Scores Inter Miami's Game-Winner vs. MLS Champs
After missing Inter Miami's last two games with a leg muscle injury, Lionel Messi returned to MLS action on Saturday night, coming off the Herons' substitutes' bench at halftime and scoring the match-winning goal with six minutes to play and adding an assist in an eventual 3-1 victory over the LA Galaxy. With his team leading the defending MLS Cup champions 1-0 at the interval on a Jordi Alba strike, Miami coach Javier Mascherano inserted Messi for Venezuelan winger Telasco Segovia. It took the Argentine World Cup winner time to settle into the contest. Joseph Paintsil then equalized for the visitors just before the hour mark. But sure enough, the GOAT gave his legion of pink-clad worshipers pink-clad at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale the special moment they hoped to see when news broke about an hour before kickoff that Messi was listed as an available sub. Messi delivered it in brilliant individual fashion. On the right side of the field near the Galaxy' penalty box, Luis Suarez sent a backwards pass to Rodrigo De Paul, who squared the ball to Messi standing about 40 yards from the visitors' goal. The 38-year-old suddenly exploded past a defender then slalomed around several more before blasting an unstoppable left-footed shot into the bottom corner of keeper Novak Micovic's net. It was Messi's MLS-leading 19th goal of the regular season, putting him one ahead of Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge. (Nashville visits NYCFC on Sunday.) Suarez added an insurance tally for the hosts in second-half stoppage time off a seeing-eye feed from his former Barcelona running mate: Saturday's result pulled Miami, which claimed the Supporters Shield in 2024, within five points of Eastern Conference pacesetter Philadelphia Union, who lost to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. However, Messi & friends have played three fewer games. Messi was injured early in an Aug. 2 Leagues Cup contest against Mexican club Necaxa. He missed the Herons' final group game win over Pumas and a 4-1 Aug. 10 loss to Florida rival Orlando City. Miami faces Liga MX power Tigres on Wednesday in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals (coverage begins at 8:00 p.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app). Columbus Crew give up 2-0 lead, fall to Toluca FC in PKs during Leagues Cup: Takeaways
The Crew had already coughed up their two-goal advantage over Liga MX's Toluca FC by the 88th minute of their Leagues Cup group-stage matchup when forward Diego Rossi stepped up for his second penalty kick in regulation. On his shot rested a chance for Columbus to avoid a penalty kick shootout Unlike the penalty kick Rossi took in the first half to give Columbus a 1-0 lead, this attempt by the 27-year-old was saved by Toluca goalkeeper Luis Garcia, leading regulation to end in a 2-2. Toluca eventually defeated the Crew 4-2 in a penalty kick shootout at Field on July 29. Crew replay: Columbus Crew fall to Toluca FC in PK shootout during Leagues Cup group play Rossi was one of two Crew players, along with midfielder Amar Sejdic, who missed an attempt during the shootout. "He took the opportunity to score," Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. "He didn't do it (on the two occasions) it could happen." All three of the penalty kicks Rossi sent were to the bottom-right corner, which worked against Garcia the first time as he dove to the left. Garcia dove right on the second and third attempts, putting him in the perfect position to make the saves. Rossi entered the game with a team-high four penalty kicks converted this year, connecting on all his attempts before facing Toluca. Outside the penalty kicks, Garcia had a fairly quiet night, facing just two shots on target, one of which Crew midfielder Max Arfsten converted into a goal during the 48th minute. Toluca, despite taking 20 shots with eight on target throughout the game, was scoreless until striker Joao Fernandes capitalized on Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte failing to secure the ball during the 71st minute. Schulte had just made the save on a shot from forward Helio Castro when the ball bounced off his chest and out of his arms. "Pat wanted to catch the ball, but didn't get the ball," Nancy said. "I think that it was offside on this one, but again, this is what I saw. They (Toluca) were pushing." Fernandes recorded his second goal at the 80-minute mark to level the game. The Crew would have earned three points if they had maintained their lead, but walked out of their first group-stage game with one point toward their Leagues Cup standings, while Toluca secured two. The top four teams from each league, based on points accumulated at the end of the group stage, will advance to the tournament's knockout rounds. BLACK & GOLD: Sign up for our weekly Columbus Crew newsletter Columbus Crew without multiple key players for PK shootout The Crew had used five substitutions by the end of regulation, leaving them without Arfsten, Daniel Gazdag and Jacen Russell-Rowe in the shootout – all of whom had stepped up for penalty kicks in the past. During Gazdag's time with the Philadelphia Union, he only missed one of 25 penalty kicks. More recently, Gazdag found his first goal with the Crew off a penalty kick against D.C. United on July 19. Nancy knows Gazdag's track record, though that was far from Nancy's mind when he took Gazdag out with a little less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation. "I saw in the moment that Daniel was already a bit tired," Nancy said. "He's played many minutes. The idea was to get a bit of freshness, simple as that." Arfsten and Russell-Rowe have both had their share of success in penalty kick shootouts, with Arfsten recording the series winner against Tigres in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals. Having been in those high-pressure moments before made watching the Toluca shootout even more difficult for Arfsten. "You can't affect it at all," he said. "So, it's definitely an emotional roller coaster. Every time they go, we want a save, and every time we go, they want to score. So, it's tough, it's emotional." Columbus Crew have second matchup with late-game defensive struggles The Crew's Leagues Cup opener marked the second consecutive game in which they have allowed an opponent to come back by scoring multiple goals with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Against Orlando City SC in regular-season action, the Crew conceded three goals after the 75th minute, which led to a 3-2 Orlando victory. "That's two in a row, we know that's a lot," Crew defender Steven Moreira said. "Of course, 2-0 at home, we have to finish the game." The Crew's struggle in keeping teams off the board late in games comes on the heels of their struggles to avoid early conceded goals. Against FC Cincinnati and Nashville SC, Columbus allowed both teams to score within the first three minutes. Columbus Crew, Toluca FC displayed physicality in first Leagues Cup matchup in 2025 Both teams maintained a bruising style of play, and there were a few occasions when players got into heated arguments, having to be separated by officials or teammates. The Crew and Toluca finished with a combined 29 fouls and seven yellow cards. "That's the game," Moreira said. "I really like it, honestly, because they showed character, we did too, against a team like this. They come, they kick, and that was a good game, good fight, two good teams." Columbus will host Liga MX's Club Puebla on Aug. 1 for their second of three games in the tournament's group stage. A game against Leon will follow on Aug. 5. bmackay@ @brimackay15 Get more Columbus Crew content by listening to our podcast This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Columbus Crew drop lead, fall to Toluca in Leagues Cup: Takeaways

Columbus Crew-New York City FC game pushed back and moved to Yankee Stadium
The Columbus Crew game against New York City FC originally scheduled for Aug. 9 has been pushed back and moved to a different venue. No longer will the two teams meet at Citi Field, but they will play Sept. 17 at Yankee Stadium. According to a statement from NYCFC, the game is being moved because the field in Flushing, New York, required maintenance following "a high volume of events" and "intense heat and weather conditions." Due to those two factors, only baseball games are taking place at Citi Field for a minimum of four weeks as the grass there is resodded. Fans who bought a ticket to the Crew game are being contacted with information on what their options are, according to NYCFC. The Crew will have over a week until their next game, which is on the road against Toronto FC on Aug. 16. bmackay@ @brimackay15 This article originally appeared on The Columbus Dispatch: Columbus Crew game moved, now face NYCFC Sept. 17 at Yankee Stadium
