Struggling Red Bulls face big questions heading into key stretch

New York Red Bulls coach Sandro Schwarz has never been one to get caught up with looking too far down the road. And the second-year coach wasn't looking to do that a day before the Red Bulls opened the Leagues Cup tournament against Chivas Guadalajara on Wednesday. Advertisement But the Red Bulls find themselves in a precarious situation after 25 league matches this season — on the wrong side of the playoff cutoff as they enter a compact part of their schedule and the stretch run of the MLS calendar. Over their next five matches, the Red Bulls will participate in the Leagues Cup, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the MLS regular season — a stretch that will include three matches in one week — raising the question of where the team's priorities lie. The Leagues Cup, an in-season tournament between teams in Mexico's Liga MX and MLS that was first introduced in 2019, and the U.S. Open Cup offer a path for the team to qualify for the prestigious Concacaf Champions Cup. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Red Bulls have not missed the MLS playoffs in the previous 15 seasons. Nevertheless, if there was an organizational priority, Schwarz wasn't tipping his hand during a conversation with The Post. 'I would say it's not … more MLS or then Open Cup, or Leagues Cup, or something like that,' he said. 'For us, the priority is to bring our face on the field every day. That's the focus and that's, I think, actually, right now, so important in our situation. To see a chance in every game, to see opportunity in every game, for our confidence to believe in ourselves.' Since the end of May, things have not been great for the Red Bulls, and a club that shocked the MLS world to reach the MLS Cup Final last winter has recorded just one win over the past two months and fallen back to 10th place, one spot out of the playoff picture, after an ugly 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire last weekend. Matt Marton-Imagn Images The Red Bulls have been without star Lewis Morgan, who has been out with a quad injury and isn't expected to return until late August, and Cameron Harper, who is dealing with a knee injury and is out indefinitely. It has raised concerns about the depth the team has to withstand the injury issues as scoring has been limited, averaging 1.56 goals per match, and their defense has struggled, conceding 17 goals over their past eight matches. Schwarz described it as 'unfair' to try and analyze the roster or the ongoing season when the topic was broached by The Post. Aristide Economopoulos for New York Post The results — or lack thereof — have left Red Bulls fans even more frustrated, with average attendance dipping from last season and supporters taking to social media, after the team seemingly had raised the bar with their playoff run last season and their first appearance in the league championship game in nearly two decades. The coach understood that the success of last year brought higher expectations but defended the current group. 'That's normal. It's not the first time that I had this experience, to be honest,' Schwarz said about the expectations. 'But for this group right now, it's not fair and we have to do everything to try to give our best. That's clear. The guys are doing a great job, and we have to handle some situations. … But the expectations are good, but I think it has also every time to be realistic, that's important. Ambitious, we are very competitive and that's what I can say we are every day.' Amid the slump for the Red Bulls and the start of the Leagues Cup, the MLS summer transfer window opened last week and the club has been linked to German striker Timo Werner, who has remained in ongoing negotiations with the Red Bulls about a possible jump to MLS after previously featuring for Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig. During a pre-match press conference Wednesday, Schwarz said he and the front office have had conversations about bringing in players during the transfer window, but insisted that the change had to come from the group already with the team. 'This is our responsibility, what we have to change and we can change this with our behavior,' he said.

Red Bulls coach slams MLS over schedule amid string of injuries

Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz slammed Major League Soccer Wednesday night for the way it has handled its scheduling following his team's 1-1 draw against Toronto, which led to three players leaving with injuries. Star forward Lewis Morgan, defender Raheem Edwards and forward Wiktor Bogacz all exited the match with injuries in the Red Bulls' first match in 11 days, because of a break in the MLS schedule for the Club World Cup, which began earlier this month. Schwarz frustratedly told reporters that the injuries 'were not the biggest surprise.' 4 Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images The issue at hand was the rule in the CBA that players had to be given five days off away from the team completely and then the schedulemakers had the Red Bulls playing Toronto on Wednesday. 'I'd love to speak to the guy who is responsible for that rule,' Schwarz said. 'Everyone knows that you need good preparation. The rule — five day break off and then directly start five days later, it's not possible [to prepare correctly]. For me, it's a new experience, for everyone it's a new experience and I think that it's not the best idea to be honest.' 4 Red Bulls midfielder Lewis Morgan runs with the ball during the MLS regular season match held at Citi Field in Corona, N.Y., on May 18, 2024. Stefan Jeremiah for New York Post He added later: 'We are not allowed to control the guys during this break, and then they directly have to be ready in the middle of the season? Come on. This is unbelievable.' Schwarz is currently in the middle of his second season as Red Bulls head coach and prior to that had spent his playing and coaching career in Europe. And the extensive break and then a quick return to action with two games in the span of four days, which was not enough time to prepare properly in Schwarz's eyes. 'Normally, you need 10 days or two weeks for the next game,' he said about the break. 4 Referee Christopher Calderon talks with Red Bulls defender Raheem Edwards after a play as defender Tim Parker looks on in the second half against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field. Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images Morgan left the game with a quad injury in the 24th minute in a game that was just his second appearance after leaving February's season opener and undergoing knee surgery shortly after. Edwards exited in the 58th minute after going down clutching his left hamstring and Bogacz suffered a concussion a little less than 10 minutes later. 4 Red Bulls head coach Sandro Schwarz watches from the sideline as they take on the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. David Butler II-Imagn Images The status of all three players is not known and Schwarz won't speak to the media again until Friday ahead of their match against Minnesota. Though the Red Bulls did announce on Thursday separate injury news related to midfielder Cam Harper. The club announced that Harper had undergone surgery on Tuesday after suffering a right knee injury in the Red Bulls' match against Austin FC on June 14 and would be out indefinitely.

BREAKING NEWS Former Tottenham and Chelsea striker Timo Werner in discussions with move to MLS

The New York Red Bulls are in the process of negotiating a deal for German striker Timo Werner from sister club RB Leipzig. A source confirmed to that RBNY is in ongoing discussions with the 29-year-old striker, who has spent the last two seasons on loan with Tottenham Hotspur. However, nothing has yet been finalized to secure a move stateside for the Stuttgart native just yet. Werner is the all-time leading scorer for Die Roten Bullen. However, with the club currently possessing strikers like Benjamin Sesko (linked with various Premier League moves) and Lois Openda, Leipzig can afford to move on from the former Chelsea man. As for New York, the club currently sits 7th in MLS 's Eastern Conference and 11th overall under the tutelage of head coach Sandro Schwarz. The club has done well on the attacking end - bagging 30 goals (good for 7th in the league overall) behind a forward group featuring former Bayern striker Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. This potential move for Werner, first reported by Tom Boger, mirrors a similar move made before the 2024 season, when RBNY transferred attacking midfielder Emil Forsberg from Germany. After moving to the Saxony-based club from VfB Stuttgart in 2016, Werner became a deadly force in Leipzig's first years of top-flight German football - bagging 95 goals across 159 appearances in his first stint at the club. He then made a big-money move to Chelsea - scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances over a period of instability at Stamford Bridge. Werner returned to Leipzig in the 2022-23 season and played there for part of the 2023-24 season (adding 18 goals in 54 appearances to his total) before embarking on an 18-month loan spell at Tottenham. He scored three goals in 41 appearances for the north London club.
