Theo Corbeanu's second-half goal lifts Toronto into a 1-1 draw with the Red Bulls

TORONTO (AP) — Theo Corbeanu's second-half goal lifted Toronto into a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night.
Toronto (3-10-5), which was playing for the first time since May 31, had lost four in a row at home.
New York (8-7-4) is 1-6-3 on the road this season.
Mohammed Sofo opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his ninth goal of the season. Lewis Morgan ran past the defense for a through ball and his breakaway shot was blocked by Sean Johnson, but Sofo was there for an easy rebound.
Morgan has eight goal contributions (five goals, three assists) in eight career MLS appearances against Toronto.
Corbeanu scored in the 51st — on Toronto's first shot on target — on a header past goalkeeper Carlos Coronel.
The Red Bulls were without suspended coach Sandro Schwarz, with assistant coach Volkan Bulut running the sideline. New York was also without suspended midfielder Peter Stroud.
Toronto is winless in the previous 12 regular-season meetings (0-9-3) with New York.

No. 6 Notre Dame names Carr starting quarterback over Minchey

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback Tuesday, ending the preseason competition with Kenny Minchey. The announcement was made on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program. Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season's run to the national championship game but has not thrown a college pass. He played in the second half of a historic 66-7 rout at Purdue last season. He was a three-time all-state quarterback in Michigan and is the son of former Michigan football player Jason Carr and the grandson of former Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr. Minchey appeared in three games with the Irish in 2023 and completed both of his attempts for 12 yards. He also appeared in last year's Purdue game, completing his only pass of the season for 4 yards and rushing two times for 12 yards. He scored his first TD on a 7-yard run. Steve Angeli, Riley Leonard's top backup last season, also was in the battle during the spring. He replaced Leonard in the title game late in the first half against Penn State in the national semifinal and led the Irish to a score that helped them get back in sync. But he transferred to Syracuse after spring ball, turning the expected three-man battle into a two-man competition. Angeli was named Syracuse's starter earlier this week. Notre Dame opens the season in primetime Aug. 31 at No. 10 Miami.

Former Cincinnati Reds OF Jake Fraley claimed off waivers by Atlanta Braves

ANAHEIM, California – It didn't take long for Jake Fraley to find a new baseball home after the Cincinnati Reds designated him for assignment on Aug. 17. The Atlanta Braves claimed the outfielder off waivers, assuming the prorated remainder of Fraley's $3.13 million contract in the process. When the Reds made the DFA move, they said part of the rationale for the timing was allowing Fraley the chance to finish the season with another team that might have more playing time for him rather than sit on the Reds' bench. He had lost significant playing time since Miguel Andujar and Ke'Bryan Hayes were added at the trade deadline. "We just came to the idea of giving Jake a chance to go play where maybe he thinks he deserves to play – which I understand – is maybe better than him sitting on the bench here," manager Terry Francona said then. Fraley, one of four players acquired from Seattle in the March 2022 trade for Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker, hit .232 with six home runs and a .710 OPS in 67 games for the Reds this season. He hit .260 with 38 home runs, 49 stolen bases and a .757 OPS in 362 career games with the Reds. Arch Manning refutes grandfather's prediction that QB will stay at Texas: "I don't know where he got that from'

In August, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning told NFL teams they shouldn't tank for his grandson, Texas quarterback Arch Manning, ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. Archie made it clear Arch had no intention of leaving Texas after the 2025 season, saying Arch will "be at Texas." Turns out, Archie may have spoken out of turn. When asked about those comments Tuesday, Arch said he wasn't sure where his grandfather got that idea. The Texas quarterback added that he considers his situation at Texas "day-to-day" for now. That's probably a wise move. Given his pedigree — and his family — big things are expected from Manning as he steps into the starting role at Texas. While he wasn't the team's top option as a freshman, Manning flashed plenty of potential last season, throwing nine touchdowns against two interceptions in 10 games. That was enough to boost fan and scout excitement for the 2025 season. Though he lacks the experience of other players, Manning is already the favorite to go No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. He would have to commit to the draft in order for that to happen, leading many to speculate on his plans. While it's possible Manning wants to remain at Texas for the long haul, the allure of being the top pick in the NFL Draft might be too enticing to pass up. The fact that Manning won't commit either way likely means he'll wait things out and see how the season goes before making his decision. There are plenty of factors in play that will determine whether Manning decides to enter the draft. If he plays well enough to be worth the No. 1 overall pick, Manning could make the decision based on what team holds that selection in the draft. The Manning family has turned down NFL teams in the past, with Eli Manning telling the then-Los Angeles Chargers not to take him with the first overall pick. The Chargers did select Manning, but traded him to the New York Giants a few picks later. If Manning struggles, he may opt to return to school and rebuild his value for the 2027 NFL Draft. All of that is unknowable now, which is likely why Manning is keeping his options open. Texas fans may be disappointed that Manning won't commit to the team beyond this season, but they had to see it coming given the level of hype surrounding Manning since he first committed to the program.
