WATCH: Chilling moment ferry hurtles towards surfers
A local surf report account posted the video on social media, which starts showing a group of people surfing the popular Kewalos break in Waikiki, then quickly pans to the jaw-dropping moment a 15 meter ferry gets picked up by a wave and comes crashing towards the surfers, who frantically tried to get to shore.
Luckily, the boat narrowly misses the main group of surfers, before the vessel runs aground on some dry reef close to shore.
The passenger ferry, which is operated by Atlantis Adventures and is used to transport people to and from a local dive site, had no guests on board apart from two crew members, according to News.com.
Maliny Soukkhasen, a board member of the Friends of Kewalo, said the incident happened around 8am local time.
'I'm just really grateful that nobody was hurt in terms of any of the surfers out on the water, hopefully they didn't cause damage to the reef,' Soukkhasen said.
From the video on Instagram it appears the ferry took two large waves to the stern, which ended up disrupting its course. As the boat was halted aground by the shallow reef it lost propulsion. Waikiki is a popular holiday destination in Hawaii. Credit: Adobe / okimo
Local media THV11 reported the coast guard confirmed that the vessel's fuel, oil and batteries were removed after running aground on the reef, preventing the threat of pollution.
Many were quick to comment on the video, expressing their shock and remembering past tragedies when boat's have hit surfers. The passenger ferry, which is operated by Atlantis Adventures, is used to transport guests to and from a local dive site. Credit: Instagram
'Off da lip! 🌊,' one person said.
'I've seen crazy airdrops but boatdrops is the first 😮,' another added.
'They don't learn from pass tragedy!! RIP bradda Paul 'POHAKU' stone!! Gone but never forgotten,' another person commented, likely referring to the the tragic death of Hawaiian bodysurfer, Paul Stone, who's body was recovered after an 40-meter boat hurtled into a Honolulu surf spot in 1984.

‘I used to be embarrassed dining alone, now it's my Friday night ritual'
Not sure where to start? Here are my favourite solo spots in Melbourne Napier Quarter, Fitzroy A fabulous wine list and welcoming vibe. The bread is to die for, too. I recommend the raw fish, shiitake and buddha hand. I sit at the bar, chat to the bartender over a dirty martini and soak up the atmosphere. Clover, Richmond Service is excellent. I recently took my book but ended up chatting to a funny, engaging bartender. The bolognese tartine is a must. I had a glass of the 2021 Karim Vionnet Cuvee KV Beaujolais − divine. Embla, CBD This is the coolest, loudest vibe of the three. I sit at the bar and watch the kitchen. The Abrolhos Island scallop with vadouvan and blood orange is my favourite. Embla gets bonus points for its extra dirty martini. My favourite Sydney solo dining spots Continental Deli Bar Bistro, Newtown The perfect spot for a snack and a martini. They make their own adorable branded martinis in tins called 'mar-tinny'. (It's so cute I kept mine as a candleholder.) L'Avant Cave, Paddington This place doubles as P&V's bottle shop, with one of the best wine selections in the city (arguably the country). Head to the rear courtyard terrace and order something random from the list, with guidance by the excellent team. It's always serving easy solo dining food, too. Jamie Bucirde is a sexologist, founding director of On the Cusp, which delivers workshops on sexual violence awareness to hospitality businesses, and behind Not So Hospitable, an Instagram account encouraging people to share experiences of assault and harassment in bars and restaurants.
