Mother of all land scams? Punjab mother-son duo allegedly sold off a whole defence airstrip

Time of India01-07-2025
A
land fraud
case of staggering proportions has come to the fore in Punjab, where a mother-son duo has sold off not just any plot of land but an entire defence airstrip, the Times of India reported on July 1.
Usha Ansal
and
Naveen Chand
, the mother and son in question, have been accused of selling a World War II-era airstrip. This airstrip, located in Fattuwala village near the Pakistan border, was previously used by the Indian Air Force (IAF) during multiple wars, including the 1962, 1965, and 1971 ones.
As the investigation unfolds, the case raises grave concerns about how such significant land can be misappropriated and the implications it holds for national security. The repercussions of this alleged scam are likely to reverberate through various levels of government and military oversight.

Long legal war
The allegations date back to 1997, when the two allegedly colluded with revenue officials to claim ownership and sell the land fraudulently.
Following a directive from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has been tasked with investigating these serious allegations. The report, which has led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR), was filed on June 20.
Live Events
The FIR cites multiple charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy.
The case first came to light through a complaint by Nishan Singh, a retired revenue official. Despite his efforts, the matter remained pending without any action until 2021, when the commandant of Halwara Air Force Station urged a probe into the sale of the land.
Following lingering inaction, Nishan Singh sought the intervention of the High Court, leading to greater scrutiny of the situation.
Major implications
Justice Harjit Singh Brar of the High Court has been vocal about the implications of the case, pointing out the potential threat to national security. He called for the VB chief director to verify the allegations personally and to report back within four weeks.
The court highlighted that the original owner of the land had passed away in 1991, yet fraudulent sale deeds surfaced in 1997, listing other individuals as owners, despite the military never transferring the land to them.
In May 2025, after persistent legal efforts, the land was finally restored to the Ministry of Defence. The investigation, now led by DSP Karan Sharma, is now looking to uncover the full extent of the scam and identify all individuals involved in this long-concealed fraud concerning strategic defence land.

Rly cops suspended for assaulting, robbing jeweller at Mum Central stn; suspended

Mumbai: Three men who assaulted and threatened a Rajasthan-based jeweller and extorted money from him at Mumbai Central Terminus recently have been identified as personnel from Govt Railway Police (GRP). They have been placed under suspension. The trio, assistant sub inspector Rathod, head constable Jagtap and head constable Bhosle, will be arrested soon. Four other policemen present during the incident have been transferred. The action was taken by GRP commissioner M Rakesh Kalasagar a day after media reports of the incident. "We are taking up this issue very seriously," said Kalasagar. The jeweller and his eight-year-old daughter had come down to his sister's place in Mumbai for Raksha Bandhan. They had booked return tickets for Rajasthan on Duranto Express on Aug 10. The jeweller's brother-in-law accompanied them to the Terminus to bid farewell. On platform 5, the group was stopped by a uniformed man seated at a table for checking their luggage. A 'senior' was seated in the room which was later identified as a beat chowky. The jeweller was threatened that he would be locked up overnight if he did not surrender the gold. He was abused and slapped twice. His daughter started to cry. The men threatened to produce the gold before a magistrate and asked him to arrange for a copy of his Aadhaar card over the phone. They also forced the jeweller to sign some blank sheets of paper. Around 10.55 pm, about five minutes before his train was to leave, the men returned his gold but kept his money. The jeweller pleaded that he would need cash for expenses during the journey. At this, the men returned Rs 1,900 and asked him to run if he still wanted to get into the train on time. "Based on CCTV footage, we identified the three policemen and placed them under suspension. Four other cops were present at the location but their involvement has not been confirmed. They have been transferred to the GRP headquarters," said a senior official. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). HR software maker Workday confirms breach; hackers may have stolen personal data, company says: ‘We recently identified…'

Image credit: Workday Workday, a major provider of human resources technology, has confirmed a data breach that resulted in the theft of personal information from one of its third-party databases. In a blog post, the company announced that hackers stole an unspecified amount of data, primarily consisting of contact information such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers. The breach was part of a "social engineering campaign" that targeted several large organisations. Workday explained that in this campaign, threat actors contacted employees via text or phone, posing as HR or IT staff, to trick them into giving up account access or personal information. What Workday said about the data breach In its blog post, Workday wrote: 'We recently identified that Workday had been targeted and threat actors were able to access some information from our third-party CRM platform. There is no indication of access to customer tenants or the data within them. We acted quickly to cut the access and have added extra safeguards to protect against similar incidents in the future.' However, the company did not explicitly rule out the possibility that customer information was compromised, as corporate clients typically store most of their HR records and employees' personal information with Workday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo Workday, which serves more than 11,000 corporate clients and at least 70 million users globally, reportedly detected it earlier this month. The company also did not clarify whether it has the technical capabilities, such as access logs, to confirm if any customer data was stolen. While the company did not disclose the name of the third-party customer database platform involved, the incident comes amid a wave of cyberattacks targeting Salesforce-hosted databases used by major corporations. In recent weeks, Google, Cisco, Qantas, and Pandora have all suffered data theft from their Salesforce systems. Google attributed these breaches to ShinyHunters, a hacking group known for using voice phishing to trick employees into granting access to cloud databases. The company added that ShinyHunters was likely preparing a data leak site to pressure victims into paying for data deletion, a tactic similar to ransomware operations. Court in Bulandshahr sentences 12 to life imprisonment in 2012 murder case

Agency: Bulandshahr (UP), Aug 19 (PTI) A local court here on Tuesday sentenced 12 people to life imprisonment and imposed fines on them in connection with a 2012 murder case. District Government Counsel (Criminal) Rahul Upadhyay said the case stemmed from an old enmity between one Rais and Yusuf's family in the Kotwali Nagar area. On August 21, 2012, Rais's relative Azad, a resident of Khurja, was attacked. A case was registered immediately, which allegedly triggered a retaliatory assault three days later. On August 24, 2012, 15 men allegedly attacked Rais' family, killing his nephew Wahid by gunfire. The attackers later reached one Nasur's house and assaulted Meena and Rashid, causing injuries, Upadhyay said. Of the 15 named accused, three died during court proceedings. On Tuesday, District and Sessions Judge Manjit Singh Sheoran convicted the remaining 12 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and awarded them life imprisonment. Each convict was fined Rs 50,500, while four who were found in possession of firearms were fined an additional Rs 5,000 each, taking their total penalty to Rs 55,500, Upadhyay said.
