Sabah allocates highest amount of RM136mil for scholarships this year
KOTA KINABALU : The Sabah government has allocated RM136 million for state government scholarships this year.
This is part of its continuous commitment to strengthen the development of higher education in the state, chief minister Hajiji Noor said.
The allocation is the highest so far.
It has risen significantly from RM50 million in 2020, reflecting the determination of the state government to ensure its youth, regardless of socio-economic background, have a chance to further their studies, Hajiji said.
'This is the government's long-term investment project to develop quality human capital that is competitive.
'We don't want young Sabahans to be left behind in education due to financial constraints,' he said in his speech read by Sabah science, technology and innovation minister Arifin Arif at the Sabah university student aid presentation at Universiti Malaysia Sabah here today.
He said 4,170 students will benefit from the scholarship programme this year, in line with the goals of Sabah Maju Jaya in empowering the education sector as a core of state development.
In addition, the Sabah government has allocated RM77.5 million to carry out 13 education initiatives to benefit schools, parent-teacher associations, Sabah student associations and tertiary students.
This includes a one-off cash aid for registrations, aid to purchase computers and the flight fare aid for Sabah students.
Hajiji said the Sabah education fund, introduced in June 2022, had helped 10,104 recipients, and RM15.8 million had been spent so far.

QSolar Tawau LSS project boosts Sabah's electricity grid capacity
TAWAU: The QSolar Tawau large-scale solar project (LSS), to be built on an 18.21-hectare site in Jalan Timur here, is capable of strengthening Sabah's electricity grid capacity and addressing electricity supply problems in the state's east coast. Ringgit seen holding gains next week on softer Fed signals
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — The ringgit is expected to trade between 4.25 and 4.26 against the US dollar next week, following weaker-than-expected United States (US) Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) data for July, which may prompt the US Federal Reserve (Fed) to consider an interest rate cut at its September meeting. The NFP data for July fell short of expectations to just 73,000 jobs, significantly below the consensus estimates of 106,000. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the latest NFP data could boost sentiment for the ringgit, as it increases the expectations that the Fed may reduce the Federal Funds Rate in September. He also noted that NFP figures for the previous two months — May and June — were revised sharply lower, further reinforcing expectations of a potential rate cut. 'Such views were very much aligned with the two dissenters during the last Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which favoured a quarter-point cut. 'The outlook for Fed Fund Rate was the main consideration among the traders as the Fed was seen as indecisive on further monetary policy accommodation during the recent FOMC meeting,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Mohd Afzanizam said the US government's recent decision to impose a reciprocal tariff of 19 per cent on Malaysia-- down from a previous rate of 25 per cent-- could help mitigate the impact. 'This is a welcome move, and there may be room for further negotiations. An improved trade arrangement could prove positive for the ringgit over the medium term,' he added. Furthermore, he believes that the recently announced 13th Malaysia Plan (13th MP) will support the ringgit in the medium to long term. Under the plan, development expenditure has been increased to RM430 billion, which is expected to boost domestic demand and encourage investment activities, ultimately supporting Malaysia's gross domestic product growth. The 13th MP was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Thursday, with a focus on driving sustainable growth based on value creation across all sectors. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week lower against the greenback, closing at 4.2750/2815 versus 4.2195/2245 previously. However, the local note traded higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit appreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8407/8452 from 2.8529/8565 on Friday the previous week, rose versus the euro to 4.8752/8826 from 4.9507/9566 last week, and gained against the British pound to 5.6208/6293 from 5.6786/6853 previously. Against Asean currencies, the ringgit trended mostly higher. The local note firmed against the Singapore dollar to 3.2907/2960 from 3.2937/2978 at the end of last week, strengthened versus the Thai baht to 13.0058/0319 from 13.0268/0478, and improved against the Philippine peso to 7.35/7.36 from 7.38/7.40 in the preceding week. Infrastructure focus in 13MP crucial for rural Sarawak, says works minister
KUCHING, Aug 2 — The recently tabled 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) places comprehensive emphasis on national infrastructure development, including in Sarawak. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Works Ministry (KKR) carries a major responsibility in implementing infrastructure development, as without good roads, it would be difficult to deliver other services such as education, healthcare and safety. 'Roads are like the lifeblood of the body. Without them, development is hard to reach rural areas. For example, although school projects fall under the Ministry of Education, their implementation and monitoring are the responsibility of the Public Works Department (JKR). 'This is the kind of inter-agency cooperation that must continue for the benefit of the people,' he told a press conference after the handover ceremony of the completed Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Rantau Panjang here today. Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said the project in the Sungai Batang Rajang area — involving the construction of a main road from Nanga Serau to Nanga Seranau and included under the 13MP — is still in its preliminary stages, and no implementation date has been set yet. 'The road is expected to span around 70 kilometres and benefit thousands of residents, including villages, longhouses, schools and clinics,' he said. As for the Sarawak Trans Borneo Highway project, Nanta said it comprises three phases starting from Tudan to Kuala Baram in the Miri division near the Malaysia-Brunei border checkpoint, ending in the Limbang division without entering Brunei. 'This project is a continuation of the Pan Borneo Highway and will have a major impact, especially on the economic development and connectivity of areas like Limbang, which is a key town in northern Sarawak,' he said. Earlier in his speech, Nanta said JKR would continue monitoring all aspects of post-handover maintenance to ensure the project functions properly and meets the required specifications. 'The successful completion and timely handover of two more projects today proves that the MADANI Government's aspirations are not just rhetoric but are realised through quality projects that are completed on schedule and bring added value to the community,' he said.
