Alicia Vikander will make her theatre debut in London opposite Andrew Lincoln in ‘The Lady from the Sea'
We'd hoped a starry play with an interesting director might plug the gap, and lo! It has come to pass. In a busy year for Ibsen adaptations – following the Lyric Hammersmith's Ghosts, the Ewan McGregor-starring My Master Builder and a Lily Allen-led spin on Hedda Gabler over in Bath – auteur Aussie director Simon Stone will put his own spin on The Lady from the Sea. And he's got some heavyweight leads in the shape of Andrew Lincoln and – in her stage debut – Academy Award-winning Swedish actor Alicia Vikander.
Ibsen's 1889 drama concerns Ellida, a woman who has settled for a comfortable life that is shaken to the core when an old lover re-emerges. As with all Simon Stone's works – most famously his Billie Piper-starring West End hit Yerma – the play is a modern interpretation that he himself has adapted and directed, so it's hard to say precisely what details of the original will be retained, but he should do something pretty enthralling with it.
Vikander is a prolific screen actor best known for playing Lara Croft in the 2018 version of Tomb Raider and for her Oscar-winning supporting turn in 2015's The Danish Girl. Lincoln was a regular on UK stages before finding major US success with The Walking Dead. Technically his last London stage role was playing Scrooge at the Old Vic's A Christmas Carol in 2020, though the show was performed in front of webcams in an empty theatre due to the pandemic.
Vikander will play Ellida, and Lincoln her husband Edvard (whether the family name remains Wangel is TBC). There's a third major role of Ellida's dangerous ex-lover – in Ibsen simply called The Stranger – that is still to be cast, but all will presumably be revealed soon-ish. Irene Roberts, who actress Lynne McGranger has played for over three decades, will make her final exit in a double episode beginning Monday. And a new trailer teases that fans are in for an emotional rollercoaster as Irene prepares a farewell party. At one point in the preview, Irene, who has been struggling with the onset of Alzheimer's disease, says she wants to 'see old friends while I still remember them'. Fans have watched with distress over the last few weeks as McGranger's character, known for her sharpness, has suffered memory loss. In her exit storyline, Irene is leaving her life in Sumner Bay to travel the world, 'while she still can'. Another highlight of the trailer sees Ada Nicodemou share a tearful scene with McGranger's fan favourite. Ada, who has appeared as the character of Leah on Home and Away for 25 years can be seen telling her old friend Irene, ''I just know that everything would be alright because you were by my side.' Fans will be eager to see how the wrenching storyline between Irene and her close friend John (actor Shane Withington) will play out. The preview teases that John may not be able to bring himself to make Irene's farewell party. As Irene finally packs away her home, a distressed John can be seen barely holding himself together as he tells his friend, 'I don't know how to say goodbye...I don't have the words.' It was during a series of episodes last month that John helped Irene come face-to-face with the truth about her medical condition. Also included in the trailer are a collage of throwback moments featuring McGranger's character celebrating her 33 years on the soap. In March, it was revealed that McGranger had filmed her final scenes as Irene on Home and Away, with the series sharing moving scenes from her last day on set. The 72-year-old was gifted flowers by her co-stars, including Nicodemou, and looked very emotional - albeit elated - as she finished up at Seven's long-running series after over 30 years in the cast. 'I've had the ride of my life. And I love each and every one of you so much: The cast – Ray, Georgie, Emily, Shane, Ada, James, all the youngins' she said in a statement. 'The art department, the writers, everybody – there are so many unsung heroes. This show is made up of so many parts' Lynne continued. 'You're all amazing, and it's been my great privilege to work with each and every one of you. I'm touched, I'm humbled and I'm so honoured. Thank you so much.' An additional post to the show's Instagram read: 'Today, Lynne wrapped her final scene with her best friend Ada by her side. 'Stay tuned for Irene's emotional exit storyline coming later this year'. McGranger has been a Home and Away fan favourite for three decades playing the character of 'Aussie battler' Irene. The actress, who won the Gold Logie at this year's 65th Awards, announced her departure from the show earlier this year. 'After almost 33 years in my dream role and working every day with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it's bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life' the veteran star said at the time. 'I am forever grateful to the best production crew in the world and to our genius writers – whose doors are always open – for everything they have done for Irene over the past 33-odd years' she continued. 'And I am so proud of the storyline which will see Irene out of the Bay. Above all, a massive, heartfelt thank you to the fans for your continued love and support.' Ever since it was revealed that long-running show would be getting a revamp, the question on everybody's lips has been: who will be the host? The popular series, formerly fronted by Eddie McGuire, originally aired on Nine before getting the axe in 2024 after 25,000 episodes. Now, under the Channel 10 helm, the series is said to be eyeing up a woman for the hosting gig. A report in the Herald Sun said network rumours have been 'bubbling for months' and plans are well underway to snare a female for the prized role. According to Woman's Day, that female may just be Amanda Keller. Best known for her time hosting Aussie lifestyle program The Living Room, Amanda's name is said to be making the rounds for the much-coveted role, according to a well-placed TV source. The opportunity couldn't come at a better time for the 63-year-old, after her Gold FM breakfast gig alongside Brendan 'Jonesy' Jones was moved to the drive time slot, thus freeing up her work calendar. However, she's not the only one being eyed up for the role. New Idea claims that Tracy Grimshaw, 65, and Carrie Bickmore, 44, are also big contenders. 'Tracy relished her chance to get away from current affairs as co-host of Do You Want To Live Forever? and she's calm under pressure,' the insider told the publication. 'But if [Ten] looks closer to home, they may go with Carrie [Bickmore],' they added. Leigh Sales, 52, and Sandra Sully, 60, have also both been mentioned. 'Someone who could be looking to spread their wings is Leigh [Sales],' the source said, adding that her 'steely gaze' would be perfect for the game show format. For the Antetokounmpos, the job provided a small source of income during a period when Giannis and his brother Thanasis were also selling items on the streets of Athens to support their family. The film itself, Dead Europe, was dark, confronting and challenging, described by reviewers as both disturbing and intelligent. However, it carried a 63 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and polarised critics, with some praising its depth and others calling it bleak.
