Prince William and Sir David Attenborough warn of ocean damage
Their message comes as Sir David's latest documentary, Ocean with David Attenborough , premieres just in time for World Oceans Day.
The film exposes the hidden devastation wreaked beneath the waves, urging urgent action to protect this vital resource.
The 99-year-old natural historian shared his shock at the damage inflicted on the deep ocean floor.
'The destruction we have caused is unspeakably awful,' Sir David said. 'If anything like this happened on land, there would be an uproar.'
This damage is largely invisible to most people, hidden beneath the surface, which makes it all the more alarming, according to the BBC.
Prince William, a long-time environmental advocate and founder of the Earthshot Prize, expressed his fascination with the ocean's unexplored depths.
'There are places in the ocean that no human has ever seen,' he told Sir David.
The veteran broadcaster confirmed this, calling it 'wonderful' that modern technology allows us to explore these untouched realms.
William sees this as a thrilling opportunity for future generations to become explorers and protectors of the planet's last frontiers.
The documentary highlights destructive fishing methods like bottom trawling. Trawling ravages marine ecosystems and threaten the ocean's ability to absorb carbon, a key factor in combating climate change.
Sir David hopes the film will raise public awareness and inspire action before it's too late. 'If this film does anything, if it just shifts public awareness, it will be very, very important,' he said.
As the world prepares for the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, both men emphasise the need for global leaders to act decisively.
The conference aims to secure commitments to protect 30% of the world's oceans, a goal that has seen slow progress.
Prince William will speak at the Blue Economy and Finance Forum, urging leaders to 'think big' and act with urgency and optimism.
Prince William's environmental docuseries Guardians , which highlights wildlife rangers' efforts worldwide,
Sir David's words echo a global plea: 'We must act before we destroy this great treasure.' This is a timely reminder that the ocean's fate is intertwined with ours. The time to protect our blue planet is now.

David Krut Projects hosts Stephen Hobbs Porous Structures installation
Local artist Stephan Hobbs has captivated the art world with his recent installations, Mnara and Porous Structures. The striking timber tower, Mnara, presented at the Johannesburg Contemporary Art Foundation (JCAF), draws attention to the unfinished and fragile nature of construction sites throughout the city. Meanwhile, his Porous Structures exhibition, at David Krut Projects in Parkwood, provides a complementary exploration of similar themes through printmaking and architectural forms. Together, these projects create a profound dialogue on the precarious beauty of the built environment, reflecting Hobbs's deep-rooted engagement with both urban and rural spaces. Read more: Meet the artist who turned water into a metaphor for life Mnara pays tribute to improvised building techniques and the tension between modern construction and indigenous knowledge. The installation reflects on places caught in time – sites where nature begins to reclaim abandoned or paused building works. Hobbs's work encourages viewers to think about the balance between permanence and impermanence in the urban environment. David Krut Projects has long supported Hobbs's printmaking, which often runs in parallel with his architectural commissions. The Parkwood gallery's three-week exhibition allowed Hobbs to further explore ideas sparked by Mnara, showing how prints and constructions converse across different media. Building the tower was both a creative and practical challenge, with Hobbs and his assistant, Teboho Mofokeng, carefully piecing together timber elements to reach 6m in height. The experience brought unexpected insights, such as comments from an international curator about rooftop gardens, which Hobbs found particularly inspiring. For Hobbs, the relationship between printmaking and installation work is a continuous dialogue. His practice blends the long-term planning of architectural projects with the visual storytelling of print, creating layered explorations of place, memory, and time. Although Mnara was not directly created in collaboration with the David Krut Workshop, the support and platform provided, through Porous Structures, helped extend the conversation. Hobbs's work remains an invitation to consider Johannesburg's evolving landscape and the stories held within its structures. Dua Lipa proudly becomes Kosovo Citizen
Pop star Dua Lipa has proudly become a citizen of Kosovo, a move that brings together her two worlds. The London-born singer, whose parents are Kosovan-Albanian, described the moment as a union of her identity. 'It feels like my two sides are now one,' Lipa said during the ceremony. The event was hosted by Kosovo's President, Vjosa Osmani. She called Lipa 'one of the most iconic cultural figures in our country's history'. She also spoke warmly about the singer's deep connection to Kosovo, according to the BBC . 'Dua and Kosovo have always been inseparable. From the world's biggest stages to the hearts of millions, she's carried our story with strength, pride, and grace,' Osmani posted on social media. Lipa lived in Pristina, Kosovo's capital, briefly from the age of 11 when her family moved back after Kosovo declared independence. The country broke away from Serbia in 2008, a move recognised by many Western nations but not by countries such as Spain, Greece, Russia, and China. The divide still causes tensions, but Lipa's role shines amid this complex history. The singer expressed how much the citizenship means to her and her family. 'I love this country, and this means so much to me and my family,' she said. She also holds British and Albanian citizenship, having been granted Albanian citizenship in 2022 for promoting the country through her music and fame. Kosovo also named Lipa an Honorary Ambassador in 2022. She has used her platform to advocate for Kosovo globally and to support vulnerable communities there. Her charity work and cultural influence have helped change perceptions of Kosovo, especially through the Sunny Hill Festival she established in 2018 with her father. The festival seeks to highlight Kosovo's vibrant culture rather than its past of conflict. Lipa headlined the Sunny Hill Festival this year during her visit. After the concert, she shared a message on Instagram. 'Sharing this night with you all, in the city that shaped me, surrounded by so much energy, joy, and pride… It's hard to put into words what it means.' The festival has become a symbol of hope and optimism for many Kosovans and offers a fresh narrative to the world about this young nation. For South Africans, many of whom come from diverse cultural backgrounds and have experienced their struggles for recognition and identity, Lipa's story resonates deeply. U.K. Ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, praised Lipa too. 'The UK and Kosovo are proud to call Dua Lipa one of our own,' he said with a smile in a photo alongside the star. With this new citizenship, Dua Lipa strengthens her bond with Kosovo and continues to shine a light on her heritage from the global stage.
